Hipstamatic for iPhone

The nostalgic longing to re-create the pre-digital photography experience only seems to get stronger. For evidence of this, you need look no farther than Instagram (Free, 3 stars), which Apple named the top app of 2011. What does this app do? It re-creates those blurred, heavily vignetted, unsaturated colors of snapshots taken in the 1960s, as well as other retro effects like lomo and B&W. It also lets its users easily share these degraded images in its own surprisingly popular social network. Hipstamatic has a similar mission statement: "The Hipstamatic for iPhone is an application that brings back the look, feel, unpredictable beauty, and fun of plastic toy cameras from the past."

But these two are hardly the only iPhone apps that can fade and decolorize your photos: image powerhouse Adobe's Photoshop Express has done the same for a few years, as have several lesser-known competitors with names like Vintage Camera, Camera+, Snapseed, and Retro Camera Plus. The need for Hipstamatic, especially at its premium for (iPhone apps) price of $1.99 would seem questionable, given the crowd of such apps. But it does add some unique twists of its own, including a nifty old-camera-style user interface and group albums.

Setup and Interface
When you first run Hipstamatic, you'll be asked to allow it knowledge of your location, which I did. Geo-tagging of photos can be very handy and helpful. Then you'll see its most unique interface?it's the spitting image of a 1970s-era Kodak Instamatic camera, complete with faux black plastic texture. A curled arrow icon lets you switch between viewing the front of the camera (where you can set the lens quality) and the back (where you see a viewfinder, shutter button, and flash switch).

Related Story Also see our Best 50 iPhone Apps

With my iPhone 4S, Hipstamatic's interface is upside-down compared with the default camera's operation. It also didn't let me use the Volume Up button to snap a picture, as the built in Camera app does. Nor could I use the face-facing camera. There are, however, some clever details, like when you turn on the flash, there's a high, rising-pitched sound that used to accompany turning on a flash (though it's not actually an Instamatic detail, since that used actual bulbs).

Effects
Unlike other fun photo apps, Hipstamatic doesn't let you apply effects after snapping, but you choose a "film" and a "lens" before shooting, which affects the look of your resulting "prints." One drawback of this is that you can't apply the effects to photos that were already in your Camera Roll before you installed Hipstamatic.

A few of the camera app's settings from the front view are less than completely intuitive: To change the "lens" you swipe on the front-view lens. To change "film," after touching a film icon, you swipe up or down for another choice. One of Hipstamatic's more clever (from a marketing standpoint) concepts is that of "HipstaPaks," which let you buy more film, lens, and flash types for different effects. The Portland HipstaPak, for example, cost 99 cents and added one lens and two film types.

After you take a shot, a "winding film roll" message sometimes blocks the viewfinder, and as in the old film cameras, a slit window peeks at the film cartridge showing the film type. The only other icon in camera view besides camera itself is postage-stamp-style square, which opens "Recent Prints." This view has four other icons?Stacks, Family Album, Contests, and My Account (a cloud icon). When I opened this view right after shooting, I'd see a "1 Print Developing" message.

I must confess that the app did add a lot of interest to my photos, with jagged edges and faded colors, though I'm generally more concerned about getting accurate images. Another annoyance was that I couldn't view the photos in succession, in slideshow fashion?I could only go to a photo's detail page, and then enlarge it, then repeat the process for the next image I wanted to view.?

PopMech offers a video history of the automotive barrel roll

Astro Spiral Jump

Rob Dyrdek's "kick flip" stunt in a Chevrolet Sonic effectively sealed his place in the hallowed halls of stunt driver lore. As it turns out, actually pulling off a 360-degree barrel roll in a vehicle is one of the most challenging stunts one can perform. Driving on two wheels? Cakewalk. Knocking down a series of buses stacked on their ends? As easy as sucking pea soup through a crazy straw. The barrel roll requires stacks of mathematical calculations to account for everything from the vehicle's weight to its speed and the exact rotation angle of each ramp.

But Dyrdek wasn't the first guy to successfully execute such a bit of insanity. He's one of a select few stunt drivers to do the deed, and Popular Mechanics has taken a look at those who have tackled the automotive barrel roll in the past. Dyrdek's stunt was actually an almost exact replica of the Astro Spiral Jump as performed in 1972 at the Houston Astrodome. That exercise used a significantly classier AMC Javelin, however. Head over to Popular Mechanics to check out the video series and click past the jump for a clip on the Astro Spiral Jump.

Heat Top Timberwolves On Dwyane Wade Game-Winning Shot (VIDEO)

MINNEAPOLIS -- Dwyane Wade wasn't about to let the Minnesota Timberwolves spoil LeBron James' birthday.

Wade hit a jumper from the wing, then scored on an inbounds pass from James with 4.6 seconds to play to lift the undefeated Heat to a 103-101 victory over the Wolves on Friday night.

Playing on a sore foot, Wade finished with 19 points, while James had 34 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds on his 27th birthday.

Ricky Rubio had 12 points, 12 assists and six rebounds, and Kevin Love had 25 points and 12 boards for the Timberwolves, who led 100-99 with 55 seconds to play.

But Wade hit a jumper and then lost Rubio on an inbounds play to make the winning bucket, one game after beating the Charlotte Bobcats with a last-second shot.

It was a crushing defeat for the upstart Wolves, who had the mighty Heat on the ropes all fourth quarter thanks to Rubio's brilliance. The Spanish rookie fed open teammates for easy buckets and hit a 3-pointer with 2:28 to play that gave them a 98-94 lead.

But James scored on a crucial three-point play and Anthony Tolliver missed two key free throws in the final minute to give Wade a chance to steal it.

Anthony Randolph had 14 points and Wayne Ellington added 11 off the bench for Minnesota.

Norris Cole scored 12 for the Heat.

It was a thrilling back-and-forth between a star-studded team that counts a loss in the NBA finals as a failure and the young up-and-comers who had lost 17 straight games.

Playing without veteran guard J.J. Barea, who tormented the Heat in the finals with Dallas, because of a strained right hamstring, the Wolves ripped off an 11-0 run in the final period for an 88-83 lead with 7:20 to play.

Chris Bosh kept the Heat in it with some sharp shooting, hitting jumper after jumper just over Love's out-stretched hand.

James turned 27 on Friday, and he said earlier in the day he always plays with a little extra juice on his birthday and the numbers support that. He entered the game averaging 35.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 5.0 assists in four previous birthday games.

True to form, he scored 15 points in the first quarter, and the Heat flustered the young Wolves into six turnovers and 39 percent shooting. Cole then scored six of the Heat's first eight points in the second quarter for a 39-26 lead, and it looked like Miami was pulling away.

But Rubio, Randolph and Ellington spearheaded a 14-0 run to put the Wolves back in front. Criticized for his shooting before coming to the NBA, Rubio hit an open jumper and added a three-point play for a 49-45 lead. Then he threw an alley-oop pass high over the rim that Randolph threw down, sending the packed Target Center crowd into a frenzy.

Then James turned the third quarter into a one-man dunk contest, soaring through the air for three straight that put the Heat back in control. He threw down a windmill, a baseline lob from Cole and a final one-handed hammer for a 78-72 lead.

NOTES: The Wolves have now sold out both home games, the first time they've sold out two in a row to start a season since 1991-92. It's their first consecutive sellouts since 2003-04, when they went to the Western Conference finals. ... Timberwolves G Malcolm Lee will miss the next six weeks after having surgery on Friday to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. It's the same knee that was bothering Lee in May, but the team said it was a new injury. ... Heat G/F Mike Miller (hernia) said he is getting close to returning.

Cops: Dad planned massacre in Santa suit

By NBCDFW.com

A father dressed as Santa?Claus arrived to his family's Christmas party with two guns, executed his entire family and then killed himself -- and planned the entire thing, police said Tuesday.

Police believe the Christmas Day massacre in Grapevine, which left seven people dead still surrounded by Christmas presents and wrapping paper, was premeditated, Grapevine Police Sgt. Robert Eberling said.

Eberling would not officially identify the shooter or the victims, family friends identified the gunman as Aziz "Bob" Yazdanpanah. Last ear, a bank foreclosed on Yazdanpanah's house, and he separated from his wife in the spring.

Yazdanpanah's wife and two children are believed to be among the dead.

See video, read the original story at NBCDFW.com

Police received a 911 call from an apartment in the 2500 block of Hall Johnson Road on Christmas morning. When officers arrived, they found the door locked from the inside, and the worst crime in Grapevine history.

Police recovered two weapons on the scene -- a Smith and Wesson 915 model 9 mm pistol with a 15-round magazine, and a Glock 23 .40-caliber pistol with a 10-round clip, according to Eberling.

Both guns were used in the murder-suicide, but Eberling would not say how many shots were fired; only saying that there were still bullets in both guns.

Eberling said a text message prior to the shooting indicates that the gunman was probably invited to the party.

At 11:16 a.m., one of the victims sent a text message to a friend indicating who was at the gathering at the apartment. The text message mentioned the gunman's name and that he was dressed as Santa. Police said there was no indication of fear or concern in the text.

Eighteen minutes later, someone placed a call to 911 from a landline inside the apartment.? Investigators could make out a muffled cry for help in the background, Eberling said.

All of the victims were found in the same room with no sign of a struggle, according to Eberling, but he said some of the victims had defensive wounds that indicate they tried to shield themselves from the bullets.

Police will wait for the Tarrant County Medical Examiner to release the identities of the victims,? Eberling said.

The gunman had some prior dealings with at least two other police departments but not Grapevine Police, according to Eberling. He did not say what kind of dealings, or when or how many incidents there were.

Investigators are still piecing together information, but Eberling said they aren't sure of a motive and may never know what led to the worst crime in Grapevine history.

Friends paint picture of loving family in turmoil
Yazdanpanah married Fatemah "Nasrin" Rahmati in 1987, according to court records. They had a daughter, Nargis "Nona," 19, who graduated from Colleyville Heritage High School in May and a son, Ali, 15, a high school freshman. All four are believed to be among the dead.

Neighbors say the family seemed tight-knit, and Aziz Yazdanpanah seemed protective of his children.

"He was pretty outgoing," said neighbor Fred Ditmars. "If you saw him, he'd say 'hi' to you and everything."

"It seemed like their whole existence was about family, so it's utterly shocking to me," said another neighbor, Terri Baum, whose daughter attended school with his daughter.

A close friend of the Yazdanpanah family said Fatemah "Nasrin" Rahmati's sister Zohreh, her husband Hossein Zarei and their 22-year-old daughter Sahra were also killed.

Sahra (pictured left in blue) was a pre-med student at the University of Texas at Arlington, and according to family friends she was a part of the Tri Delta sorority at UTA.

"Bob loved his kids. And I can't even fathom that that's what happened," Baum said.

The mother, Fatemah "Nasrin" Rahmati, worked the past four years doing manicures at a salon on Southlake's town square. The manager said she often talked about her family, but never in a bad way.

Police cautioned the investigation is far from over.

CBS, Univision take top spot (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? CBS and Univision tied for first place in the ratings Tuesday, a very slow night in which the "Kennedy Center Honors" was the only new show on the Big 4 networks.

Both Univision and CBS scored a 1.4 overall rating in the 18-49 demographic.

The top-rated show was an "NCIS" rerun on CBS at 8p.m. It scored a 2.1 rating in the demographic and 6 share, and 12.5 million total viewers, which also made it the most-watched show of the night.

CBS aired the sole new show on the Big 4 networks, "The Kennedy Center Honors," which earned a soft 1.1 rating/3 share, as well as 8.4 million total viewers. It was the second-most watched show of the night.

Univision's "Una Familia con Suerte" at 8p.m. earned a 1.7/5 and 3.9 million total viewers. At 10p.m., "Aqu? y Ahora" scored a 1.0/3 and 2.4 million.

It was the second consecutive night of a No. 1 ratings finish for Univision. The network also benefited from rerun-heavy slates on the major networks Monday. It edged out CBS.

3 NATO troops killed in eastern Afghanistan

(AP)? KABUL, Afghanistan ? Three NATO service members have been killed by a roadside bomb in eastern Afghanistan, the alliance said Wednesday. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, saying the target was a U.S. military convoy.

NATO's statement said that the deaths occurred Tuesday, but provided no further details about the incident or the nationalities of the troops.

The Taliban said the attack took place in Paktiya province, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) south of Kabul.

The latest deaths bring December's toll of foreign troops killed in Afghanistan to 23, for a total of 539 deaths so far this year. The yearly tally is considerably lower than for 2010, when more than 700 troops died. The number of wounded has remained high, dipping only slightly from last year's total of more than 5,000 service members.

Also Tuesday, a community council leader in the Musa Qala district of restive Helmand province was shot and killed by insurgents along with his 20-year-old son and two-year-old grandson, the governor's office said.

A statement from the office said the attack occurred late in the evening, as council leader Adbdul Baqi was heading home from his office. There were no further details.

The U.S.-led coalition has started transitioning parts of Helmand to the government as part of a plan to cede full control of the country's security to Afghan forces by the end of 2014.

USDOJ: California Federal Court Blocks Bogus Tax Credit Scheme

??USDOJ: California Federal Court Blocks Bogus Tax Credit Scheme

WASHINGTON? A federal court in Los Angeles has permanently barred Lamar Ellis of Brea, Calif ., from promoting a scheme involving sales of bogus federal tax credits, the Justice Department announced today. ? According to the government?s complaint , Ellis fraudulently claimed to have billions of dollars in federal research tax credits that the United States supposedly granted him for purported scientific breakthroughs.

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? The suit alleged that Ellis advertised the sale of these bogus credits on the Internet and issued phony documents to people purporting to give them credits that could reduce their tax obligations. ? The government also alleged that Ellis partnered with the Southwest Louisiana Business Development Center, a nonprofit organization in Jennings, La ., to try to sell $24 billion of the fictitious credits.

The civil injunction order entered against Ellis bars him from telling prospective customers that he can transfer tax credits to them. ?He is also required to give the government a list of the names, addresses and social security or tax identification numbers of everyone to whom he purported to distribute tax credits.

In the last decade, the Justice Department?s Tax Division has obtained hundreds of injunctions to stop tax fraud promoters and unscrupulous tax preparers. ?Information about these cases is available on the Justice Department website .

Last-minute holiday shopping gives lift in finale

A last-minute shopper leaves the Toys R Us flagship store in New York's Times Square, Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011. A last-minute shopper leaves the Toys R Us flagship store in New York's Times Square, Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011. As the clock counts down to Christmas Day, retailers have begun a big push to snare procrastinating shoppers searching frantically for last-minute gifts and hoping for final-weekend deals. (AP Photo/Mary Altaffer)

(AP) ? The holiday shopping season turned out to be two seasons split by a big lull.

A surge in buying in the two weeks before Christmas coupled with a record-breaking Black Friday gave retailers a solid season. The doldrums between the buying binges show how shoppers have learned to wait for the discounts they know will come.

For Dec. 1-24, spending rose 4.7 percent compared with the same period last year, according to research firm ShopperTrak. In November, it rose 4.1 percent. A 4 percent increase is considered a successful season. A combined figure for the whole season won't be available until after Dec. 31.

The increase is good news for the economy, because it shows shoppers were willing and able to fund a holiday splurge. Consumer spending, including major items such as health care, accounts for 70 percent of the economy.

Still, plenty of shoppers are pinched for cash in the slow economic recovery, and were seeking the best deals. Stores have trained even shoppers who are primed to spend to look for a discount.

In the week before Christmas, last-minute shoppers gave retailers a 4.5 percent increase in revenue at stores open at least a year with the same week last year, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers-Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Store Sales Index.

The index estimates sales at 24 major stores including Macy's Inc. and Costco Wholesale Corp. Revenue at stores open at least a year is an important measurement of a retailer's performance because it excludes the effects of stores that open or close during the year.

Total retail revenue for the week ended Saturday rose 14.8 percent compared with the year ago, ShopperTrak estimates.

Gift buyers gained steam as the season went on. The store revenue figure rose 0.9 percent last week from the week before, building on a 3.4 percent increase the week before that.

"The downs and ups were much more accentuated," said Michael P. Niemira, chief economist at the trade group. "It just shows how cautious the consumer is. Consumers are bargain hunters more today than ever before."

The post-Black Friday lull was deeper than usual this year. The two weeks after Thanksgiving weekend showed the biggest percentage sales decline since 2000. Then, during the final two weeks before Christmas, sales surged again, by the highest rate since 2005, Niemira said.

"The holiday season was good but uneven," Niemira said.

Stores are expected to benefit when shoppers come back to spend their gift cards, because people often spend more than the cards' value. In addition, gift card sales are recorded only when shoppers redeem them.

People have more money on their cards to spend. According to an ICSC-Goldman Sachs survey of shoppers conducted Sunday, 18 percent of holiday spending went toward gift cards, up from 14.6 percent last year.

ICSC said it expects holiday sales for November and December to rise in line with its forecast of 3.5 percent.

The week after Christmas, which includes six shopping days, should be strong. But it's being compared with seven days last year because the week as retailers measure it ends on Saturday.

As proof that consumers are timing their spending to when they know they'll get the best bargains, Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, was the biggest sales day, as expected, generating sales of $11.4 billion, up 6.6 percent from a year ago, according to ShopperTrak.

But based on preliminary data, Christmas Eve and Dec. 26 were the second- and third-heaviest spending days of the season, according to ShopperTrak founder Bill Martin. He had originally expected Saturday, Dec. 17, to be the second-largest. Christmas Eve wasn't even forecast to be among the top 10 days.

"Shoppers are willing to spend when they know the biggest discounts are available," said Martin.

ShopperTrak measures foot traffic in 25,000 stores in the U.S. and blends those figures with economic data along with proprietary sales figures from merchants. The data excludes sales from auto dealers, gas stations, restaurants and grocery stores.

A fuller holiday spending picture will come Jan. 5, when stores including Target Corp. and Macy's will release December sales figures.

SB Nation: Deaths pulled hockey community together

ESPN ignored a full year of hockey tragedy in their 2011 Year in Review segment. But as coverage of the game shifts, it's time to realize that ESPN doesn't control the message anymore. Average fans do.

Dec 27, 2011 - I'm not one of those hockey fans that feels ESPN should treat us like first-class citizens. I'm obviously an advocate for our sport and somebody that thinks hockey is far superior to baseball, football, basketball or any other game that's played on the planet, but I'm also not out of touch.

I realize that hockey fans are in the minority, and that as long as it's an expensive game to play and a complicated game to understand, the sport will never catch on the way basketball or football or baseball have. When I was a kid, it was $25 a season to play baseball. Hockey was nearly $1,000 a season. It's just sort of the way it is. Hockey will never match up in popularity in places where you can't just pick up a puck and a stick and go play on the pond, and as a result, the NHL will never be as popular as MLB or the NFL. If you haven't resigned yourself to that yet, you should do it now.

At the same time, ESPN is still a news organization, and their embarrasing refusal to cover even the most obvious hockey stories via their television product was on full display over the Christmas holiday, when they aired their annual Year In Review special. In that special, they honor athletes who have passed away in the last calendar year, and despite the tragic year the hockey family suffered, we were completely ignored by the Worldwide Leader in the 2011 edition.

We'll let a FanPost at Flyers blog Broad Street Hockey do the explaining.

ESPN aired their tribute to athletes who have died in 2011.

Not a single hockey player was mentioned.

So, here, I would like to pay tribute to those players of the sport (whether active in 2011 or not) and any dedicated staff members who passed away. The crew killed on the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash is included as well.

Mention anyone who is missed, and they will be added.

Remember those who were lost. They are part of our world as hockey players. ESPN forgets, but we will not.

What followed was a lengthy list of members of the hockey community who passed on in 2011, crowdsourced by readers from all across the Internet. It's a remarkably long list that included both active players, coaches, scouts and others, as well as those who were no longer active at the time of their death.

Its length is both tragic, message-sending, and oddly therapeutic. The rest of the sports world may have forgotten about the tragic deaths of Derek Boogaard, Rick Rypien and Wade Belak, or the shocking tragedy that was the loss of the entire Lokomotiv Yaroslavl hockey club.

They may not have ever even heard of Mandi Schwartz, the Yale womens hockey player who lost her inspring battle with leukemia, in April. They may not have remembered the life of E.J. McGuire, the highly-respected head of NHL Central Scouting, who also passed from cancer in April, or that of Harley Hotchkiss, the NHL owner responsible for bringing the league to Calgary.

But that's the therapy of it. They might not have remembered, but we remember. In light of a slap in the face from THE trendsetters in American sports media, the hockey community has come together and said that they won't be ignored.

Luckily, we live in a time when we don't have to be ignored, even when the so-called Worldwide Leader In Sports does just that. More than ever, that "hockey community" today doesn't include just players, coaches, front office staff and owners. It includes you, me, and that guy with the tattoos that sits in the sixth row of Section 127.

The lack of hockey coverage from networks like ESPN is disappointing and at times insulting, but it's forced the NHL to get creative in how they view the media. Five years ago, I was an average fan of the Philadelphia Flyers, and now, I've attended NHL Drafts, All-Star Games, the Stanley Cup Final, two Winter Classics and countless regular season games as a member of the media.

I don't say this to toot my own horn, because we have an entire network of writers that have the had the similar opportunities. In every case, those chances to embed average fans inside NHL locker rooms have hopefully brought other average fans closer to the sport they love.

We're not the only ones doing it, either. Puck Daddy at Yahoo! Sports has become a must-read for hockey fans, as has Pro Hockey Talk at NBC and countless team blogs around the web that aren't part of the SB Nation network. NHL.com is, for my money, the best league-run website on the Internet, NHL Network is consistently improving their coverage, and the soon-to-be-launched NBC Sports Network has already proven that they'll be dedicated to covering hockey in a suitable manner.

Twitter is the great equalizer in all of it, of course, and while I don't have to numbers to back up a claim that hockey fans are some of the most vocal Tweeters, I do know that hockey topics trend worldwide more than the Worldwide Leader In Sports would ever have you believe.

Quality hockey coverage is out there, and in most cases, that coverage is bringing fans closer to the game than ever before. So while it might be frustrating and it might be insulting when ESPN ignores us, especially over highly emotional topics like the most tragic year the sport has ever seen, it's time to realize that it doesn't matter.

No matter what, we're not going to forget. That's what's important.

Ancient seal found in Jerusalem linked to ritual (AP)

JERUSALEM ? A rare clay seal found under Jerusalem's Old City appears to be linked to religious rituals practiced at the Jewish Temple 2,000 years ago, Israeli archaeologists said Sunday.

The coin-sized seal found near the Jewish holy site at the Western Wall bears two Aramaic words meaning "pure for God."

Archaeologist Ronny Reich of Haifa University said it dates from between the 1st century B.C. to 70 A.D. ? the year Roman forces put down a Jewish revolt and destroyed the second of the two biblical Jewish temples.

The find marks the first discovery of a written seal from that period of Jerusalem's history, and appeared to be a unique physical artifact from ritual practice in the Temple, he said.

Very few artifacts linked to the Temple have been discovered so far. The site of the Temple itself ? the enclosure known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary ? remains off-limits to archaeologists because of its religious and political sensitivity.

Archaeologists say the seal was likely used by Temple officials approving an object for ritual use ? oil, perhaps, or an animal intended for sacrifice. Materials used by Temple priests had to meet stringent purity guidelines stipulated in detail in Jewish legal texts, which also mention the use of such seals.

The site where the seal was found is on the route of a main street that ran through ancient Jerusalem just outside the Temple compound.

The seal was found in an excavation run by archaeologists from the government's Israel Antiquities Authority. The dig is under the auspices of a broader excavation nearby known as the City of David, where archaeologists are investigating the oldest part of Jerusalem.

The City of David dig, located inside the nearby Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan and funded by a Jewish group affiliated with the settlement movement, is the Holy Land's highest-profile and most politically controversial excavation.

NBA: Hornets 85, Suns 84: New Hornet stings Suns

PHOENIX - Eric Gordon made a 20-footer from the top of the key with 4.2 seconds to play in his New Orleans debut to give the Hornets an 85-84 victory over the Phoenix Suns in their season opener Monday night.

Gordon, who came to New Orleans in the trade that sent Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers, gave his team its only lead since the first two minutes of the second half.

Suns rookie Markieff Morris threw the ball away on Phoenix's final possession.

Gordon scored 20 points. Carl Landry added 14 and Trevor Ariza 13 for New Orleans.

Robin Lopez scored 22 points, more than he had in any game last season, for the Suns. Steve Nash had 14 points and 12 assists but was scoreless in the final quarter.

Marcin Gortat added 13 for Phoenix.

Both teams were awful from three-point range, the Suns going 5 of 25 and New Orleans 2 of 16.

The Hornets were within one seven times in the final seven minutes before Gordon's game-winning shot.

Ariza drove the lane and was fouled by Morris with 35.4 seconds to go and the Suns up 84-83, but he missed both free throws and the Suns' Jared Dudley grabbed the rebound and called time. Dudley, though, missed a fading 10-footer in the lane with 16.9 seconds to go to give New Orleans its shot at the game winner.

Gordon dribbled downcourt and let fly from the top of the key to put his team ahead. There was plenty of time for Phoenix to respond. But after a timeout, the ball was inbounded to Morris, who tried to throw the ball to Nash, but tossed it out of bounds instead with a half-second to play.

Down by as many as nine late in the first half, the Suns opened the third quarter with a 9-2 run, Nash's 21-footer putting Phoenix up 50-49 with 9:48 left in the period. After Greivis Vasquez tied it at 54-54 with a three-point play, Nash scored the next five on a driving layup through traffic and a three-pointer, giving Phoenix a 59-54 with 6:06 to go in the quarter. The Suns led after that, until the final New Orleans shot, but never by more than six.

The Hornets led most of the first half.

Gordon's 10-foot floater capped an 8-2 spurt that put New Orleans up 41-34 with 2:10 left in the half. The run reached 14-6 when a layup gave the Hornets their biggest lead of the half at 47-38 31.1 seconds before the break. Lopez's three-point play cut the lead to 47-41 at the half.

Rim shots

? Despite giveaway promotions, the Suns did not sell out their home opener Monday night for the first time since 2005.

? The Suns began the season with the same starting lineup that finished last season for the first time since 1990. Then, it was Kevin Johnson, Jeff Hornacek, Kurt Rambis, Tom Chambers and Mark West.

95% Weekend

All Critics (66) | Top Critics (24) | Fresh (61) | Rotten (3)

It's a definitive example of naturalistic moviemaking -- you feel you're breathing the air that the characters are breathing.

Its final moments offer a vision of what a contemporary romance can achieve: an appreciative gasp of truth, a wet-eyed hope for more.

One of the truest, most beautiful movies ever made about two strangers.

If you've ever met someone who changed your life in the space of days, you'll relate to something in this movie.

The organ that "Weekend" is most concerned with isn't the one you might think, but the human heart.

In just a short period of time, a weekend hookup tests the boundaries each man has set for himself.

Part of the brilliance of Haigh's film is how specific the characterizations are of his two main characters, how their different natures both allow for the possibility of love and impede it.

Deserves to find a place in the hearts of wistful romantics everywhere, no matter what their sexual preference.

It's splendidly played with an understated intensity that deftly captures the shifting emotional tone of the relationship.

Offers up the kind of subtle, truthful relationship drama that's all too rare in cinema.

There's a fresh, sweaty, honest, unpretentious air to it, and when they part, with Glen on his way to spend a year working in Portland, Oregon, we genuinely believe that something like love has come into their yearning lives.

Writer-director Andrew Haigh has a delicate, sensitive touch, and this is appealing as a simple peek into modern romance... but there's a sense of wishful thinking -- or even desperation -- that I suspect is not intended here.

There's a deceptive simplicity to British writer-director Andrew Haigh's poignant, fluent character study, which has already earned comparisons to Before Sunrise.

Haigh treats his subject matter with matter-of-fact realism. If this is a new voice on the British film scene, it's a refreshingly adult one.

It is a tender, humane film, with an easy, unforced cinematic language: a film that doesn't need to try too hard.

Haigh's film is written with a shrewd, unpretentious feel for the way young people behave when they're getting to know each other, shot with a keen eye for urban solitude, and completely nails its seemingly modest tasks...

Haigh, writing, directing and producing, drives through the meeting-cute introductions and the medium-molten sex scenes as if they were merely marks on the map, to follow the simple, complex arc of an evolving love affair.

Impressively directed and superbly written, this is an emotionally engaging and strikingly naturalistic romantic drama with terrific central performances from newcomers Tom Cullen and Chris New.

A remarkable film that signals an exciting new voice in the LGBT landscape.

Sexy, provocative, engrossing and occasionally ornery, it should appeal to anyone whose curiosity about someone new has provoked them to question their own identity.

Terrific low-key turns from the two leads inject their growing bond with genuine emotion, making this a love story that will get under the skin of romantics everywhere.

Cullen and New are British stage actors with little background in film. Haigh's only previous film was a documentary. Perhaps because they don't feel bound by a set of rules, they've created one of the year's most enjoyable surprises.

Weekend is the year's wittiest hymn to romance.

Girl, 9, was feared missing after flight change (AP)

HARTFORD, Conn. ? A 9-year-old girl flying by herself to visit her grandmother had to change planes unexpectedly, sending her relatives into a panic when her original Southwest Airlines flight landed without her.

Chloe Boyce took off from Tennessee on Tuesday, bound for LaGuardia Airport in New York. Bad weather forced her plane to detour, and the passengers had to change planes. When the plane she was initially on arrived at LaGuardia, family members said it took close to an hour to locate her.

"When I got the text (from her mother) that she wasn't on the plane, and Southwest doesn't know where she is, I started freaking out," said Joseph Kerr, the girl's stepfather.

Southwest spokesman Brad Hawkins said the airline apologized to the family for not letting them know she had changed planes.

Chloe, of Clarksville, Tenn., was accompanied by Southwest employees during her trip, but she said she was a little nervous because nobody told her why she had to get off the plane in Baltimore.

"I was like `I'm supposed to be getting off at LaGuardia. I'm not supposed to get off this plane,'" she said.

Chloe's journey started in Nashville. She was rerouted to Cleveland, then went to Columbus, Ohio, before landing in Baltimore. From there, she made it to New York, 3 1/2 hours later than scheduled. After meeting with her relatives, they drove to her grandmother's house in Danbury, Conn.

Her stepfather is an Army sergeant based at Fort Campbell, Ky., so she is used to traveling, her family said.

"She was definitely more calm than we were," said Elena Kerr, her mother, who reached Chloe by cell phone at the Baltimore airport when she did not show up on time in New York.

Southwest gave the family a $250 flight voucher and refunded the girl's ticket, but Chloe's family has not received an explanation for why the airline did not tell them about the changes. He said they plan to ask the Federal Aviation Administration to require airlines to notify guardians of any changes to flights carrying unaccompanied minors.

Hawkins, the Southwest spokesman, said the airline tries to notify parents of "irregular operations," even though it is not mandatory. He also said the airline tries to avoid such situations by booking unaccompanied minors on itineraries that don't require changing planes.

For the return trip, Joseph Kerr said they will be driving back.

"That way we know where she is, who she is with, and she is safe," he said.

The 25 Most Bone-Crushing Hits in NFL History

25. Anquan Boldin Knocked out of Action

Jets safety Eric Smith might have regretted launching himself into Boldin during a pass in a 2008 game versus the Arizona Cardinals.

Smith flew toward Boldin, hit the wide out in the face mask and snapped his head backwards. Boldin lay motionless on the field before he was carted off. Smith, meanwhile, was suspended one game and fined $50,000.

24. Earl Campbell, the Battering Ram

Even an offensive player can provide pain to the opposing side. Earl Campbell made defenders shake in their boots. He would bowl over anyone who was in his way and wound up gaining many yards because of it.

The best example came in 1978 at the expense of Isiah Robertson.

23. John Lynch's Finest Hit

Lynch was in the twilight of his career when he broke up this potential touchdown catch by the late Chris Henry in a contest between the Broncos and Bengals.?

He'll certainly end up in Canton one day, and plays like this one (which are violent, yet clean) show just why.

22. Brandon Jacobs Grounded

After this poor decision, the Giants running back certainly thought twice about launching himself into the air.

The vulnerable Jacobs was blasted and crashed back to Earth against the Eagles. Unfortunately, the ball didn't come with him.

21. Ryan Clark on McGahee

The 2008 AFC Championship Game was salted away by two Baltimore turnovers in the late going.

One of those came from Willis McGahee?and his fumble came courtesy of a hit by Pittsburgh's Ryan Clark. Both players remained on the ground for several minutes. McGahee suffered a concussion and left the field by a stretcher.

20. Desean Jackson Silenced

This is just one reason why it's unsafe to go over the middle.

In 2010, DeSean Jackson and Dunta Robinson collided. It resulted in a violent crash and a concussion for the Eagles prized receiver.

Recent moments like this one were the impetus for the NFL's crackdown on helmet-to-helmet hits.

19. Steven Jackson Pounded

The opening game of the 2008 regular season proved to be a rude awakening for the Rams' running back. Jackson was met by Eagles cornerback Sheldon Brown as he caught a pass at midfield.

His helmet was removed, but the ball stayed with him. Too bad it came in a losing effort.

18. Bad Break for Krumrie

The emotional leader of the Cincinnati Bengals defense was lost due to a broken leg suffered in the early moments of their Super Bowl XXIII encounter with the San Francisco 49ers.

The way in which Krumrie fractured his fibula and tibia is too gruesome for words, so watch the video with caution.

Fortunately, Krumrie went on to play for six more years.

17. Ward Turns the Tables

Ed Reed has made a living out of breaking up passes and delivering the knockout blow to opposing receivers. It's unusual to see him get a taste of his own medicine.

But that's what Hines Ward did in a Monday Night route.

16. Ray Lewis Sparks Long Return

Chris McAilster's return of a missed Bronco field goal in 2002 was, at the time, the longest play in NFL history. It may not have been possible if not for Ray Lewis' block at the start of the run.

The future Hall of Fame linebacker displayed perfect technique and extreme power when he leveled poor Keith Burns.

15. Pat White Doesn't Like Ike

Pat White learned the hard way that facing the Steelers defense is nothing like facing an opponent from the Big East.

The former West Virginia quarterback scrambled near the sideline before being rudely greeted by Pittsburgh defensive back Ike Taylor. White left on a stretcher.

14. Hines Hammers Rivers

Hines Ward has a reputation of being one of the league's dirtiest players.

After watching some of his blocks/hits, it's richly deserved. Take a look at a shot he delivered to Bengals rookie linebacker Keith Rivers in 2008.

13. Mo Lewis Makes Way for Brady

We had no idea that this would be the end of Drew Bledsoe's career as a Patriot?and we certainly had no idea that this hit by Mo Lewis would kick start one of the greatest careers by a quarterback.

The Jets linebacker crunched Bledsoe as he went toward the sidelines in a 2001 regular season contest. Lewis' hit forced the then-unheralded Tom Brady to come in as the New England starting quarterback.

All he's done since...three Super Bowl rings and a laundry list of accomplishments.

12. Bart Scott Blasts Big Ben

Scott, then with Baltimore, couldn't wait to get to Ben Roethlisberger.

The great modern-day rivalry between the Ravens and Steelers added another chapter when the linebacker took down Pittsburgh's prized quarterback in ferocious fashion in Nov. 2006.

11. Dallas Clark Feels the Pain

Dallas Clark is bigger than Tanard Jackson. When you build up speed, however, you can become a powerful weapon.

The Tampa Bay safety leveled the all-pro tight end of the Indianapolis Colts in 2007 during a play-action pass play in which Clark cut towards the middle of the field.

10. George Wilson Takes Two

In the 1940 NFL Championship Game between the Bears and Redskins, Bill Losmanski's long touchdown run was sprung with a devastating block.

That blow was delivered by George Wilson, who took out two members of the Washington defense.

It really didn't matter, as Chicago went on to a 73-0 dismantling of the Redskins.

9. Darrell Reid on Chris Henry

Tennessee's Chris Henry probably never wanted to return another kick again after what he endured in the RCA Dome in 2007.

The Colts' Darrell Reid came full speed?and connected. Four years ago, it's a legal hit. Today, Reid would have to open up his wallet. Either way, it's scary to watch.

8. Steve Largent Gets Revenge

Steve Largent will forever be known as one of the all-time best wide receivers.

In 1988, he delivered one of the best tackles by an offensive player. On opening day of that season, the Seahawk legend was knocked out of a game against the Denver Broncos on an illegal hit by Mike Harden (who was fined by the NFL).

In the year's rematch, Largent returned the favor when shortly after Harden hauled in an interception.

7. Marshall's Law Rules Montana Senseless

The 1990 NFC Championship Game turned on this play.

Early in the fourth quarter with San Francisco up 13-9, Joe Montana was blindsided by Giants' defensive lineman Leonard Marshall, which knocked the Niners QB out of the game?and out of action for more than a year.

The Niners failed to gain a first down the rest of the way and New York went on to end San Francisco's hopes of a three-peat with a 15-13 upset.

6. Super Hit in Super Bowl XI

Some believe that Jack Tatum is the NFL's all-time most feared tackler.

Sammy White would probably agree with that statement. The Vikings wide receiver was separated from his helmet (and senses) after being obliterated by the Raider defensive back.

There's a reason why Tatum's called "The Assassin."

5. Reggie Bush Jacked Up

The opening moments of a 2006 NFC Divisional contest between the Saints and Eagles in the Superdome resulted in a breathtaking collision.

Sheldon Brown delivered the blow, and Reggie Bush never knew what hit him.

4. Brian Moorman Meets Sean Taylor

Even the Pro Bowl has nasty hits.

Just ask punter Brian Moorman. In the 2006 edition, the representative from the Buffalo Bills was trying to make good on a fake.

The late Sean Taylor made sure he didn't get the first down.

3. Jack Tatum on Darryl Stingley

It's a play that defined both involved and turned out to be one of the darkest moments in NFL history.

During a preseason game between Oakland and New England, Tatum collided with the Pats' receiver. Stingley's spinal cord was compressed and he was a quadriplegic until his death in 2007.?

In response to the hit, the league changed its rules to curtail aggressive plays such as this one.

2. Gifford Leveled by Bednarik

In 1960, New York Giants running back Frank Gifford was the golden boy of the NFL. Of much different description was the Philadelphia Eagles' Chuck Bednarik.

During a regular season meeting at Yankee Stadium in late November, the Giants were on offense behind by a touchdown in the game's waning moments.

Gifford caught a pass over the middle and tried to get out of bounds to stop the clock. But that route was short-circuited by a savage Bednarik tackle that sent Gifford straight to the ground and the ball into the air. Chuck Weber fell on the loose ball to preserve a 17-10 win that helped Philadelphia capture the 1960 NFL Championship.

Bednarik's hit knocked Gifford out of football for 18 months and probably made him contemplate going into television.

1. L.T. Breaks Theismann's Leg

In real speed, this sack by Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor on Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann in 1985 looks rather ordinary.
