Affordable Social Media Marketing Intelligence: Alerti Review ...

I must admit, with every social media monitoring tool I review the bar gets raised a little bit higher. The social media marketing intelligence services offered by Alerti are by no means exempt from my scrutiny. However, for a reasonably priced tool, Alerti has quite a bit to offer.

A Review of Alerti?s Online Business Intelligence Features

The Alerti app for Apple iPhone

The Alerti app for Apple iPhone (image via Apple)

For a low-cost social media monitoring tool, Alerti?s features are certainly competitive. To start, Alerti has the basics covered: exportable reports, archived queries, email alerts and task assignment. Based on the pricing plan, collaborators can share dashboards and follow-ups can be assigned to team members accordingly. Just as most tools do, Alerti monitors the various social networks as well as blogs, forums and news websites.

However, Alerti takes their business intelligence a step further by integrating both Twitter and Facebook insights. The Facebook insights exceed beyond fan growth and include the identification of ?top fans.? This type of service I beneficial for companies interested in finding their biggest brand advocates. Another advantage, which I have seen in very few tools (even at the highest price point), is a mobile app for the iPhone.

In addition, Alerti incorporates 40 different languages. Up until this point, Meltwater Buzz took the trophy home for most languages with 27 total. Overall, Alerti is a nice entry-level tool with a more-than-reasonable price point. If you are working with a limited budget and require a moderate level of social media monitoring, Alerti is a great option.

Where Alerti Falls Short in Terms of In-Depth Social Media Analysis

Business intelligence services for online marketing by Alerti

As with every tool I have monitored, I will continue to stress the concept of ?different strokes for different folks.? If in-depth social media monitoring is what you desire, Alerti is not for you. I?ve seen an extensive lineup of features in many tools on the market that Alerti unfortunately does not have. Of these features, Google Analytics integration, site mozRank, topic discovery and link tracking are all absent. By link tracking, I am referring to dedicated URLs by which campaigns can be tracked throughout Alerti. While this is still manageable using external resources?such as Bit.ly?the extra step has a tendency convolute the process.

Furthermore, Alerti does not offer audience or author demographics. This allows for a rather shallow understanding of the content of mentions. If you are looking to sync Alerti with your current CRM or company database, you may want to think again. While mentions are completely exportable in the form of a .csv file, Alerti does not offer an open API for developers.

Who Should Use Social Media?Intelligence Tool Alerti & Why

Alerti is a great tool for individual brands or marketing agencies to use if they are more interested in brand mentions than in-depth campaign tracking and audience segmentation. I can imagine using Alerti as a reputation management tool?particularly for companies that prefer not to use social media. There are instances in which clients of mine regularly monitor online reviews, and Alerti would be an affordable option for implementing this process.

The most expensive plan for Alerti is a mere $70 and includes 200 searches. This offers enough queries for even a national brand to comfortably monitor mentions. There is even a free plan available that allows two searches per month. The $25 plan offers 50 searches and the $50 plan offers 100 searches. With a 30-day contract, Alerti is also a great entry-level tool for companies that are still trying to figure out what social media metrics are important to them.

Baptist bodies call on church to reject racism

Te'Andrea and Charles Wilson

Te'Andrea and Charles Wilson

JACKSON, Miss. -

Southern Baptist bodies are calling on a Mississippi church that blocked a black couple from getting married under its roof to reject racism.

Leaders of the Mississippi Baptist Convention and the Southern Baptist Convention said Monday that preventing Charles and Te'Andrea Wilson from marrying at First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs was wrong.

Southern Baptist beliefs reject racism. In keeping with Baptist tradition, they want the congregation to chart its own course.

The Rev. Stan Weatherford, pastor of the church, married the Wilsons earlier this month at a predominantly black church in Crystal Springs. The wedding was moved after some congregants told Weatherford they opposed allowing black people to marry in the church.

Some church members were upset Sunday about the media attention surrounding the decision to deny the Wilson's wedding. One woman swung a purse at 16 WAPT reporter Meg Pace before entering the First Baptist Church of Crystal Springs.

Other church members said it was not the entire congregation's decision.

Crystal Springs town officials have planned a racial unity rally Monday evening. The Wilsons are expected to attend.

Rain drenches Olympic cycling, archery events

LONDON (AP) ? Heavy rain drenched the women's road cycling race Sunday and strong winds rattled through tennis courts and the equestrian arena as the London Olympics faced its first encounter with Britain's often tempestuous weather.

Thousands of fans braved downpours along the 87-mile (140-kilometer) Olympic cycling route, while the riders themselves battled to keep control as they flew across pools of rainwater.

In London's Greenwich district, wind and rain forced a brief delay at the equestrian events and pulled loose the roof of an enclosure housing tournament judges.

To the south at Wimbledon, play in the Olympic tennis tournament was delayed for almost three hours amid repeated showers, and the arena's Center Court roof was rolled out to allow some matches to continue.

The archery competition ? taking place at the capital's storied Lords cricket ground ? was also blighted by downpours during a women's team quarterfinal between Denmark and South Korea.

Claps of thunder had announced the start of the women's road cycling race, close to Buckingham Palace, but spectator Simon Ashmore, 29, said the soaking conditions hadn't dampened the crowd's spirits.

"It was a fantastic atmosphere despite the rain. People were still jolly and everyone was sharing brollies," said Ashmore, using a British term for umbrellas.

At the Olympic Park, Molly Wilson, from Michigan, wrapped her U.S. flag around her head in an attempt to fend off the rain.

"I know London is rainy so this doesn't surprise me, though I will bring an umbrella next time," she said.

British horse rider Kristina Cook insisted the wind and rain hadn't put her ? or her horse ? off their stride as they competed in the equestrian events at Greenwich.

"Obviously I would love the sun shining down on me now, it would have been brilliant, but that's England for you isn't it?" said a philosophical Cook.

But she said she did get concerned when strong winds yanked off part of a roof on a temporary enclosure where the judges were based.

"When the judges' roof came up and down as he (my horse) was doing his extended trot, I really hoped that he wasn't going to spook," she said.

Despite the showers, some Olympic venues escaped the poor weather.

Soccer matches in central and northern England went ahead unaffected, the beach volleyball tournament in central London continued unscathed, and there was actual bouts of sun at the Weymouth sailing venue in southwest England.

Syrian troops fire tank shells and artillery at Aleppo neighborhoods

Photo credit: AP | Syrians hold anti-government protest in Aleppo, Syria. (July 27, 2012)

BEIRUT - Syrian tanks and artillery pounded rebel-held neighborhoods in the commercial hub of Aleppo on Sunday in a bid to retake control as President Bashar Assad's regime accused regional powerhouses Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey of trying to destroy the country.

Activists say opposition fighters control large swathes of territory across Syria's largest city. The government has been struggling for a week to beat back their assault and stem the tide of recent rebel advances in the civil war.

The head of the main opposition group, the Syrian National Council, called for international help in arming the rebels to face the regime's heavy weaponry, particularly tanks.

"If the international community cannot act, they should support the opposition with anti-tanks missiles and anti-aircraft rockets," Abdel Basset Sida told the Gulf News during a stopover in Abu Dhabi. "We seek international supporters to arm our uprising against the regime."

Saudi Arabia and Qatar have expressed willingness to help fund the rebels and they are believed to be funneling money through Turkey to the opposition, which is using it to purchase arms and equipment.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem railed against interference by the region's Sunni powers in a rare public criticism of his Middle East neighbors. He accused them of supporting the rebels at the behest of Israel.

"Israel is the mastermind of all in this crisis," he said during a joint news conference in Tehran with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi . "They (Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey) are fighting in the same front."

Syria's Sunni majority forms the backbone of the uprising while the regime is dominated by Assad's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam. Iran is Syria's only remaining ally in the Middle East, standing by Damascus throughout the 17-month uprising.

Amid fears of a massacre or a bloody final battle in Aleppo, civilians have been fleeing the city in ever greater numbers.

"Life in Aleppo has become unbearable. I'm in my car and I'm leaving right now," said a Syrian writer as he got ready to drive away. "There's shelling night and day, every day," he said over the telephone on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

He painted a dire picture of daily life in the embattled city, torn between the government forces and those of the rebels.

"Bread, gasoline and gas are being sold on the black market at very high prices," he said. "Many things are in shortage."

Videos uploaded onto the Internet show deserted neighborhood streets filled with rubble knocked off the multi-story apartment buildings by incoming mortar shells. Shards of broken glass also litter the streets and few windows appear to still be intact.

Since the rebel assault on Aleppo began a week ago, about 192 people have been killed, mostly civilians, according to the activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Some 19,000 people have died since the uprising began, the group says.

The regime strategy for now appears to be to soften the rebel positions with artillery before actually moving into the densely packed streets of the neighborhoods where their tanks be at a disadvantage.

Activists reported heavy shelling of several areas of Aleppo as well as clashes in the southwestern neighborhood of Salahhedine, which has been a rebel stronghold for the past week.

State media reported several successful operations against "terrorists," which is how the regime describes the rebels, in Salaheddine. But activists maintained the neighborhood remained outside government control.

The rebels seem to be putting up a much more effective fight than before, occasionally succeeding in disabling or capturing the regime's heavy, Russian-made tanks.

A video posted online by activists Sunday showed rebels riding through the town of al-Bab in Aleppo province in a captured regime battle tank.

"Rebels have completely seized control of the town of al-Bab east of Aleppo. It is the biggest town in the Aleppo countryside," said local activist Mohammed Saeed. He added that another 200 fighters had entered the city Sunday to join the 1,000 fighters who had poured into the city over the past few days to repel the Syrian army's effort to regain control.

He also said rebels have received "a new batch of weapons and ammunition," but declined to say from where.

The battle for Aleppo, once a bastion of support for Assad's regime, is absolutely critical in the struggle for Syria's future. Rebels already control large sections of the neighboring Idlib province, which borders Turkey, and if a major metropolis fell to them it could possibly create the nucleus of some kind of "liberated" territory that could receive further support from the international community ? much the way eastern Libya became a rebel sanctuary during the fight against Moammar Gadhafi last year.

Yet Syria's rebels are still massively outgunned and it seems just a matter of time before Assad's massed forces outside the city of 3 million crush them, much the way a similar rebel assault on Damascus over a week ago was quashed.

"They mobilized all their armed terrorists and tried to capture Damascus in less than a week," Moallem said in Iran. "They were defeated. Today, they've gone to Aleppo and definitely they will be defeated in Aleppo."

Iran has provided Assad's government with military and political backing for years, and has kept up its strong support for the regime since the uprising began in March 2011. The rest of the Arab world, however, has turned against Syria and on Sunday, the Arab League once against condemned Damascus.

The group's secretary general, Nabil Elaraby, told reporters that the regime's Aleppo offensive "amounts to war crimes" and that those behind it will eventually be brought to justice. Speaking at the League's headquarters in the Egyptian capital of Cairo, he said the pan-Arab organization supported calls by Syrian opposition groups for an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council on the regime's assault on Aleppo.

The violence has sent refugees flooding into countries bordering Syria including Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Lebanon.

Jordan said it had opened its first tent camp for Syrians, saying a surge of refugees forced it to do so.

Authorities had been reluctant to set up the camps, possibly to avoid angering Assad's regime by concentrating images of civilians fleeing his military onslaught.

Jordan says it hosts 142,000 Syrians refugees. With their numbers growing daily by up to 2,000, Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said Sunday that Jordan had no other choice but to open the camp. He spoke at the camp's opening ceremony in the hamlet of Zataari, about 11 kilometers (7 miles) from the northern border with Syria.

Home Decoration: Home Interior Designs

Are you planning to buy a home for your family and want to make sure that they are not only happy with the outside but the interior as well? Or are you thinking of giving your present home a new look in a room or a total makeover? If you answer yes to either of these questions, what you need to know about home interior design.

Unlike home interior decorating that concentrates on finishes such as paint, window coverings, wallpapers and furnishing, home interior design is the very process of shaping the interior space of your home according to your lifestyle and the various lifestyles of your family. Interior design is integrated toward the architecture of the home and is involved in the room layout, cabinet designs, windows and door placements, and so on.

Home interior designing depends largely on the types and sizes of your many rooms. Basic rooms include the living room, kitchen, deck, bedroom, bathroom and sometimes a home office. These rooms can also be further subdivided into a guest room, dining room, kids' room and adult's room, among others. The different aspects involved in home interior design such as cabinet making, room layout, window placement, appliance selection and tile and floor selection should aptly fit the room since each room has a different purpose.

So, if you are planning to do some home interior designing, decide what rooms need improvement and incorporate the seven elements of home interior design -- form, mass, shape, line, color, texture and pattern.Home Interior Designs

?Urinetown: The Musical? Is a Scathing Satire of Broadway Message ...

runfreedom e1343336959775 Urinetown: The Musical Is a Scathing Satire of Broadway Message Musicals on the Evils of Capitalism

PlayMakers Repertory Company?s Summer Youth Conservatory will perform a student production of Urinetown: The Musical, a scathing satire of Broadway message musicals on the evils of Capitalism, on July 19-22 in the Paul Green Theatre in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill?s Center for Dramatic Art. A splendid musical satire with a terrible title, Urinetown features lively music by Mark Hollmann, biting lyrics by Hollmann and Greg Kotis, and an acerbic book by Kotis.

PlayMakers mainstay and UNC Department of Dramatic Art professor Julie Fishell will co-direct the show guest director Jeff Stanley co-direct 25 high school-aged Summer Youth Conservatory participants, who began their five-week course of study on June 18th. Stanley is a professor at Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT, and a director for the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, CT.

Although Julie Fishell admits, ?This is my first experience with this particular show,? Jeff Stanley says, I was living in New York City when Urinetown was part of the N.Y. International Fringe Festival in the Fall of 2000. I did not see it then, but remember hearing about it when I directed a show for the Fringe in 2001, because by then it had transferred uptown and that was like a dream come true for any production of the Fringe. I remember thinking, ?If Urinetown can move to Broadway, maybe my show can!? It did not.?

Stanley adds, ?I saw the Broadway production, but have not seen another production since. I have never directed it before.?

But Stanley says what made him want to co-direct Urinetown is, ?First and foremost, I love comedy; and this show delivers that in spades. It has it all: absurdity, high-brow, low-brow, wordplay, pratfalls, double takes, the list goes on and on. It?s incredibly clever and reverent to the Broadway musicals it is constantly lampooning.?

He adds, ?You can tell the writers are big fans of the conventions of musical comedy, but were also interested in their own spin on it. They are delivering a serious message as well about how we misuse our resources, but they lure the audience in with humor before slapping that message on them.

?Oscar Wilde presciently summed it up when he said, ?If you?re going to tell people the truth, you better make it funny or they?ll kill you,?? says Jeff Stanley.

Co-director Julie Fishell says, ?The music is just amazing, and the show is an irreverent reverie that examines a major paradox of living: survival at any cost, calculation, use of intellect or force is just plain impossible!?

Urinetown: The Musical made its Big Apple premiere at the 1999 New York Fringe Festival. Two years later, the American Theatre of Actors? Off-Broadway production of the show, directed by John Rando, with musical staging by John Carrafa, opened on April 1, 2001 at the Chernuchin Theatre, where it became a big hit and ran through May 28, 2001. Urinetown won the 2000-01 OBIE Awards for Best Choreography (John Carrafa) and Best Book and Lyrics (Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis), plus the 2002 Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Choreographer.

The show made its Broadway debut, also staged by John Rando and John Carrafa, on Sept. 20, 2001 at Henry Miller?s Theatre, where it racked up 965 performances before closing on Jan. 18, 2004. Urinetown was nominated for ten 2002 Tony Awards?, including Best Musical. It won three Tonys: for Best Original Musical Score (Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis), Best Book of a Musical (Greg Kotis), and Best Direction of a Musical (John Rando).

Co-director Jeff Stanley says, ?The story begins with the narrator, Officer Lockstock (Dylan Goodman) introducing us to the world of Urinetown: The Musical, which takes place in a town like any other town you might find in a musical. We soon learn that a 20-year drought has left a water shortage so severe that citizens must now use public facilities to take care of their private business.?

He explains, ?Our story focuses on Public Amenity #9, where the iron-fisted Ms. Pennywise (Alex Pellett) employs a young dreamer named Bobby Strong (Adrian Thornburg) as her assistant. Bobby?s father, Joseph (Andrew Cook), cannot afford his morning business that day, and tries to convince Pennywise to let him in for free. After she refuses, he relieves himself resulting in a one-way trip to ?Urinetown? (the place, not the musical).

?The loss of his father and the new love of Hope (Laura Bevington) lead Bobby to rise up against Caldwell B. Cladwell (Dylan Peterson), the money-mongering owner of the Urine Good Company, which controls all the amenities,? Stanley explains. ?It just so happens that Hope is the daughter of none of other than the imperious Cladwell. And, as they always do in a play, hijinks ensue. With the help of Little Sally (Olivia Griffin), Officer Lockstock guides us through the world of Urinetown (not the place, of course, the musical!).?

In addition to co-directors Julie Fishell and Jeff Stanley, the PlayMakers Repertory Company creative team for Urinetown The Musical includes PRC producing artistic director Joseph Haj, choreographer Missy Barnes, musical director Mark Lewis, technical director Adam Maxfield, co-scenic designers Michael Rolleri and Adam Maxfield, lighting designer Cecilia Durbin, co-costume designers Jade Bettin and Adam Dill, properties manager Aline Johnson, sound designer Michael Epting, and stage manager Sarah Smiley.

Co-director Julie Fishell says, ?We are repurposing the set from Noises Off, which was the final show of PlayMakers? 2011-12 season. It has been modified for our production, but the basic architecture of it remains the same.?

She notes, ?The set needs to accommodate several different locales: Public Amenity #9, the offices of the Urine Good Company, various street locations, and even a secret hideout. The play is constantly reminding the audience that they are in fact watching a play so we?ve tried to include some elements that make the stagecraft quite visible to the audience.?

Co-director Jeff Stanley adds, ?The lighting will be of great help in identifying these various locales. We were very inspired by the productions of [German playwright and poet] Bertolt Brecht [1898-1956], who oftentimes used harsher, less pleasant lighting to continually remind his audience that they were being entertained. We hope to incorporate a dash of that inspiration so we don?t in any way suggest we are in a naturalistic world?.

?The costumes are very important to this story,? claims Jeff Stanley, ?because we have two worlds at odds: the Haves and the Have-Nots. We drew lots of inspiration from the 1930s for both factions. Obviously, the Great Depression offers a nearly endless world of inspiration of poverty stricken Americans. We looked at lots of pictures of Hoovervilles, breadlines, the Dust Bowl, etc. We contrast the world of the poor in Urinetown with that of the wealthy Cladwell and his staff. If we?ve done our jobs, it will be immediately apparent which team a character belongs to based on his or her clothes.?

Stanley notes, ?We are theater professionals, and expect the young actors to behave as such. It is an educational experience, though, so we hope to teach as we go. Every good actor has a large variety of tools to choose from when working on a play and their character in it. We hope to impart the ?why? of what we are doing in additional to just simply the ?how.? How does each choice help tell the story of what your character wants, how they go about getting it and what stands in their way? We have to move fast though, so we throw a lot at the students all at once and we have to say, we are constantly impressed at how well they handle it. It?s always exciting to see them begin to run with ideas and techniques we?re working to offer them.?

He adds, ?The style of the play is quite challenging. The comedy is very broad and requires crackerjack timing and careful attention. I also find the second act of the play to be very challenging; it?s like a runaway train and once it starts, it does not let up until the finale.?

Julie Fishell says, ?The material itself is just simply brilliant. The music is fantastic and fun. The characters are a hoot, and the story is outrageous. As a director, you dream about working on such good material, because the possibilities of where you can take the production are limitless. It?s been really fun to mine this hysterically clever play with such a great team of collaborators and young talent!?

HOUSTON (July 26, 2012) Two small U.S. companies are the recipients of the 2012 Space Medicine and Related Technologies Commercialization Assistance Program (SMARTCAP) award. ACell, Inc., of Columbia, Md., and Enterade USA LLC of Newberry, Fla., each received a $100,000 SMARTCAP award to help in moving their health care products toward commercialization as they address unmet health needs in space and on Earth. SMARTCAP is a new competitive program launched by the National Space Biomedical Research Institute's (NSBRI) Industry Forum.

ACell and Enterade will use the awards to address wound healing and the effects of radiation exposure in space, respectively.

"By developing new unique solutions for medical care in space, we are also making an impact on health care on Earth," said Dr. Dorit Donoviel, NSBRI deputy chief scientist and Industry Forum lead. "NSBRI's mission is to ensure astronaut health and use the knowledge and technologies developed for humans in space to improve life on Earth. The NSBRI Industry Forum engages the private sector in providing solutions for human spaceflight. Because the bar is set high for medical care in space, technologies developed for space generally possess unique features that translate to a competitive commercial advantage in Earth markets."

ACell has utilized its proprietary extracellular matrix (ECM) technology to manufacture dressings trademarked as MatriStem to improve wound healing. With the SMARTCAP award, ACell will develop a new gel formulation that is more appropriate for spaceflight and also expand the applications of the product on Earth.

"ACell appreciates the opportunity provided by SMARTCAP, which will enable us to advance our platform technology and develop the next-generation wound-healing device used to aid humans in space as well as patients here on Earth," said Rodney Bosley, ACell president.

The startup company Enterade has developed a specially formulated drink that rehydrates patients and lowers the gastrointestinal side effects during radiation therapy. Through SMARTCAP, Enterade will test the product for efficacy in protecting against the gastrointestinal effects resulting from the type of radiation exposure astronauts are likely to experience during spaceflight.

Enterade in-licensed the rights to commercialize the product last November from the University of Florida. David L. Day, director of the Office of Technology Licensing, said that the university is pleased that Enterade and the researchers in the university's radiation oncology laboratories earned the SMARTCAP award.

"We believe in the product's potential to alleviate suffering and discomfort for both patients and potentially astronauts, and we appreciate the opportunity given Enterade by NSBRI to further the drink's development," he said.

###

The SMARTCAP award is dependent on the companies raising a match in funding from a non-federal source and is intended to position the selected technologies for follow-on support from investors, potential industry partners or other funding entities. The NSBRI Industry Forum will focus on helping the selected companies identify and prioritize critical issues on the path to market and develop an action plan for the 18-24 months following completion of their project.

The next SMARTCAP solicitation is scheduled to be announced via email and on the Industry Forum website (nsbriforum.org) in September 2012.

NSBRI, funded by NASA, is a consortium of institutions studying the health risks related to long-duration spaceflight and developing the medical technologies needed for long missions. The Institute's science, technology and education projects take place at more than 60 institutions across the United States. NSBRI partners with its Industry Forum to encourage commercialization of NSBRI-supported products and research.

Obama Urges House to 'Do The Right Thing' on Tax Cuts

President Obama is urging the Republican-led House of Representatives to follow the Senate's lead and "do the right thing" to extend middle class tax cuts.

Speaking to reporters at a Cabinet meeting this afternoon, the president praised the Senate for moving forward with his plan to extend the Bush-era tax rate for families earning less than $250,000 a year and let the rate expire for higher earners.

"It will provide certainty and security to families who are already feeling pinched because of the economy. It will be good for the economy as a whole. And now the only thing that is going to prevent the vast majority of Americans from not seeing a tax increase next year is if the House doesn't act," he said. "We need 218 votes in the House of Representatives? to make sure that 98 percent of Americans don't see their taxes go up next year."

Check Out Other Times Obama Said To 'Do The Right Thing'

In recent days the president has accused House Republicans of holding the middle class tax cuts "hostage" until lawmakers agree to spend $1 trillion on tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans.

"One of the things that I'm going to be doing, my Cabinet members are going to be doing over the next several days, is to make sure that the American people understand that we can provide them certainty right now for next year that their taxes will not go up, and they will then be able to plan accordingly," Obama said. "Small businesses will be able to plan accordingly, knowing that we've taken a whole bunch of uncertainty out of the economy at a time when the global economy is experiencing a number of disruptions."

What Next, #Intranet Manager? | Business 2 Community

More money? New colleagues? Change of scene? Change of manager? Whatever your reason for wanting a new role, you can be certain that your skills will be in demand. But with so many options open to you, what will your next career move be? In this post, we?ll look at the career paths open to intranet managers and ask you where you think you?ll head next.

New Geographies

You?re doing a fine job managing the intranet for the company in France, it?s time to spread your wings and stretch your linguistic abilities and manage the intranet in Germany too. This is a remarkably common next step for intranet managers: develop the job by adding new territories. Same role, broadly similar skills just over more employees.

New Internal Digital Technologies

As an expert in intranets, you?re perfectly placed to aggregate some new internal digital technologies to your job role. Smart, connected organisations will ensure that these other techs ? such as digital signage ? will be connected to your intranet, so much of the content will likely be familiar to you. Consider these other internal digital technologies. Could these come your way?

Go Large ? Move to a bigger company

You?re a big fish in a small pond, so it?s time to change the size of the pond. Moving to a larger company, with larger budgets, bigger, more complex audiences is a very natural next step. However, it may not be all it?s cracked up to be. There are several thought-leaders who consider smaller intranets to be more innovative (maybe fewer people to say no to crackpot ideas?) so you may just find the bureaucracy stifling.

Add (or switch to) external digital

So you?re clearly an expert on internal digital communication, maybe now?s the time to diversify and add external digital communication to your job role. Whilst the audiences are vastly different in size and needs, the digital skills you?ve learnt in managing your intranet will be invaluable when it comes to managing your company?s customer-facing dot com or social media channels.

Specialise Still Further

Great intranet managers will have significant, valuable skills and experiences at their disposal. One career path opportunity is to specialise still further and look for opportunities in information architecture, user experience management or the specific content management system you?re using.

With the rise enterprise social networks, intranet managers may wish to specialise in internal and external social media, social communication and community management.

Drop the Digital

You can do internal digital communications, so maybe it?s the right time to switch to more an internal communication role that covers both on- and offline. Your skills could be particularly sought-after by firms which want to move more of their communications online; they?ll need someone who has a strong understanding of traditional offline channels, but at the same time can be a strong advocate for digital and can help to shape online channels and processes.

Transfer the skills

It?s time for a big change. You?ve explored all the intranet, internal digital, external digital and specialist digital career paths available to you inside the company and out and you feel it?s time for a change. So what career paths are open to you now?

  • Business Transformation ? Given the communication, collaboration and transactional nature of intranets, you probably have a very sharp understanding of how technology can make a difference to an employee?s efficiency. It?s also very probable that you understand people?s roles and the machinations of your business. I expect you could jot down five ways to improve the business right now?
  • Change Management ? There?s no chance you?ve lead your intranet without having an appreciation of change management. Whether your organisation is in the ?intranet as a project? cycle, or more about continuous improvement, recognising the impact of your changes and working to smooth the transition are an important part of your current role ? but could it be your future career?
  • Project Management ? A former manager of mine likened intranet projects to plate spinning. The real trick is to keep all the plates up and if one really must fall, make sure it?s the cheap plate from IKEA that no one will notice. In the course of your current role, you?ve managed complex cross-functional legacy projects. Fancy more of the same?
  • Consultancy ? Allow other organisations to leverage your learnt skills and experiences. We?ll spare blushes and not mention names, but there are countless intranet practitioners who are now consulting others
  • Outsource ? How about managing other intranets on behalf of other companies?
  • IT ? yea, slip over to the darkside! You?ll be able to able to provide important business insight!

Summary

The experience you?ve gained managing your company?s intranet will stand you in good stead as you embark on the next phase of your career. We hope some of the suggestions above provide food for thought. Let us know ? what?s your next step?

Reducing traffic at 2008 Olympics yielded large cut in CO2

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2012) ? China's Olympian attempt to improve air quality during the 2008 summer games did more than provide a healthier atmosphere for the athletes. It also demonstrated that widespread changes in transportation patterns could greatly reduce the threat of climate change.

New research by an international team of scientists led by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) indicates that China's restrictions on motor vehicles had the side benefit of dramatically cutting emissions of carbon dioxide by 24,000 to 96,000 metric tons (about 26,500 to 106,000 U.S. tons) during the event.

To put this in perspective, the authors note that this reduction by a single city represents more than one-quarter of 1 percent of the emissions cut that would be necessary worldwide, on a sustained basis, to prevent the planet from heating up by more than about 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) by the end of this century. That is the amount of heating generally considered to lead to major societal impacts.

While scientists have long known that reduced traffic would lead to lower carbon dioxide emissions, precise estimates for an actual urban area are difficult to calculate.

"The Beijing Olympics allowed us to actually measure what happens when people drive much less, and it turns out that it makes quite a substantial difference to our climate," says NCAR scientist Helen Worden, the lead author. "People may think their choice of how to commute to work doesn't make a difference, whether driving their cars or riding their bikes. But on a large scale, it really does."

Funded primarily by NASA, the study was published in Geophysical Research Letters, a publication of the American Geophysical Union. It was co-authored by researchers at the University of Iowa, the University of Tsinghua in Beijing, Argonne National Laboratory, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. NCAR is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.

Clearing the air for Olympians

As China has industrialized in recent decades, residents of Beijing and other major cities have been subjected frequently to unhealthy levels of air pollutants. To provide better air quality during the 2008 Olympics, Chinese officials imposed stringent limits on motor vehicle use, including banning 50 percent of privately owned vehicles on any single day because of alternate-day driving requirements. They also imposed limits on industry and temporarily suspended construction activity.

Recent research has confirmed that the restrictions successfully reduced levels of air pollutants such as carbon monoxide and ozone. Worden and her colleagues, using new methods in satellite observations and computer simulations, were also able to estimate the impact on carbon dioxide, a powerful greenhouse gas.

"This implies that sustained controls on urban transportation emissions, on the scale implemented in Beijing, could potentially provide a significant part of [emissions reduction]," the study concludes. "However, in this study, we do not address the sustainability of these controls or the feasibility of applying traffic restrictions in other cities."

The study measured the effect of driving reductions and did not focus on China's policy during the Olympics.

From monoxide to dioxide

The research required several steps. Worden and her colleagues first turned to an instrument developed by NCAR and the University of Toronto called MOPITT (Measurements of Pollution in the Troposphere), which flies aboard NASA's EOS-Terra Satellite. The instrument's measurements, analyzed with a new multispectral data product, enabled the researchers to estimate the amount of carbon monoxide in the Beijing atmosphere in August 2007, without traffic restrictions, and in August 2008, during the Olympics.

The researchers then inferred the amount of carbon dioxide emissions by drawing on other studies in Beijing that have measured the ratio of emissions of the two gases at 0.03 grams of carbon monoxide to 1.0 grams of carbon dioxide. They used simulations by the NCAR-based Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) to fill in gaps in the observations because MOPITT could not obtain measurements during overcast days. The computer model also enabled the researchers to focus on carbon dioxide emissions from motor vehicles as opposed to other sources, such as factories.

"We knew there had to be some reduction in carbon dioxide from the Beijing traffic restrictions, and this experiment enabled us to find out how much," Worden says.

She adds that the same study could not be done for this summer's London Olympics, partly because the surface and cloud conditions in London aren't as favorable for the measurements of carbon monoxide near the surface from MOPITT. In addition, London is very different from Beijing in terms of pollution controls and it has already restricted traffic in the central city for several years.

Cuban dissident Oswaldo Pay? blazed path for democracy in Cuba

Mr. Pay? was one of the only dissidents whose work for democratic reform reached thousands of Cubans, writes a guest blogger. He died in a car accident on Sunday.

By Anya Landau French,?Guest blogger / July 24, 2012

Mourners surround the coffin containing the body of the Cuban activist Oswaldo Pay? during a funeral mass in Havana, Cuba, Monday, July 23. Pay?, who spent decades speaking out against the communist government of Fidel and Raul Castro and became one of the most powerful voices of dissent against their half-century rule, died Sunday in a car crash.

It?s hard to say what the future might have held for Oswaldo Pay?, a prominent Cuban dissident who headed the Christian Liberation Movement on the island, had he not perished in a car accident [Sunday].

But what he left behind is no small thing: Mr. Pay? managed to organize fellow Cubans, who organized more fellow Cubans, and together they collected nearly 25,000 signatures seeking democratic reforms to the Cuban constitution. And while some criticized him for his Varela Project (so named for a famous Cuban priest and independence hero), which proposed changes to a constitution that critics refuse to legitimize, the movement he led is the only reformist one that I?m aware of to spread across the island and reach thousands of Cubans. Pay?, who shunned US aid insisted that Cuba?s transition would be undertaken by Cubans, not foreign governments. It was his Varela Project that reached the ears of an entire nation, thanks to former President Jimmy Carter?s nationally live-televised 2002 speech ? in Spanish, no less ? at the University of Havana.

Oswaldo Pay? was a man dedicated to his faith and to his hopes for a more just and democratic society. Simply put, he made an impact in a way few other Cuban dissident activists have, and his passing leaves a void that won't be easily filled.

Syrian forces launch air attacks on largest city

Alex Thomson, Channel Four Europe, reports from?Midan, one of the hardest-hit suburbs of Damascus, where homes?have been destroyed, cars are charred shells and lines of electricity are piles of mangled cables.

By NBC News and wire services

Fierce clashes intensified in Syria's commercial capital of Aleppo on Tuesday as the government unleashed air attacks?on rebellious neighborhoods,?while activists claimed opposition fighters had control over several neighborhoods in the city.

Government helicopter gunships attacked Aleppo, the?Local Coordination Committees, a network of on-the-ground activists, told NBC News.?The Associated Press reported that warplanes circled in the air around the city, while the?British Broadcasting Corp., citing one of its reporters near the area, said that fighter jets had bombed eastern parts of Aleppo.

With sequential rebel attacks on the country's two largest cities and a bombing that wiped out some of his top security advisors, President Bashar Assad reshuffled his top security posts, dismissing one general and appointing a national security council chief to replace the one killed in the recent attack.?

Syria's rebels, outmanned and outgunned by the regime's professional army, have mounted a surprising pair of offensives over the last 10 days against the country's two major cities ? Damascus and Aleppo. Even as the government appears to have snuffed out most of the rebel pockets in the capital, the rebels appear to be fight fiercely in the commercial hub of Aleppo in the north.

The government has?instituted?tight restrictions on outside news outlets working in Syria, making it difficult to verify many reports from inside the country.

Fighting spreads in Aleppo
The battle in Aleppo has spread from neighborhoods in the northeast and southwest of the city to previously untouched areas like Firdous in the south and Arkoub closer to the center, local activists and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

At least 20 people have been killed in the fighting in Aleppo,?the Local Coordination Committees told NBC.

Opposition activist Mohammed Saeed has estimated that the rebels are holding large chunks of the city and the government has responded with attack helicopters ? key to their retaking of Damascus over the last few days.

Circling fighter jets have also been breaking the sound barrier overhead in an apparent attempt to cow the fighters, the AP reported.

Syria acknowledges it has chemical weapons, will use them if attacked

"It's like a real war zone over here, there are street battles over large parts of the city," Saeed said, with the sound of gunfire and explosions audible over the phone. "Aleppo has joined Homs and Hama and other revolutionary cities."

Syria's government is acknowledging for the first time it has the ability to use chemical and biological weapons, though the government says those weapons wouldn't be used on the country's citizens. The Morning Joe panel ? including New York Magazine's John Heilemann and the Council on Foreign Relations' Dan Senor and Richard Haass ? discusses.

On Sunday, a newly formed alliance of rebel groups called the Brigade for Unification announced an operation to take Aleppo, the country's largest city with about three million people. While the rebels have not shown themselves able to hold neighborhoods for any significant period of time, the continued fighting highlights the government's inability to pin down the lightly armed opposition forces.

Prisoners in Aleppo's jail also rioted overnight and activists said at least eight have been killed by government forces. Another prison riot in the city of Homs has been quelled with tear gas and live ammunition.

The International Committee of the Red Cross issued a statement Tuesday calling the situation in and around Damascus "tense and volatile."

"People have been calling us on a daily basis, saying they need a helping hand," Marianne Gasser, the ICRC's head of delegation in Syria, said in the statement. "Some are in need of the basics -- items one usually takes for granted, such as water and food, and a mattress to sleep on. But first and foremost, they are in need of safety."

With the conflict raging in Syria's two biggest cities, as well as many provincial ones, Western and many Arab nations are pushing for Assad's removal, although Russia, China, Iran and Iraq are among others opposed to any forced handover of power.

The ferocity of the Syria conflict, in which 1,261 people have been killed since fighting intensified in Damascus on July 15, according to one opposition watchdog, has concentrated attention on the possible repercussions of Assad's overthrow.

Warning over chemical weapons
As the struggle for Syria intensified, Western leaders seized on an admission by Damascus that it has chemical and biological arms and could use them if foreign powers intervened.

Analysts: Russia will be big loser if Assad falls

President Barack Obama said the world would hold Assad and his entourage accountable "should they make the tragic mistake of using those (chemical) weapons."

Israel, which has publicly discussed military action to prevent Syrian chemical weapons or missiles from reaching Assad's Lebanese Shiite militant allies Hezbollah, said there was no sign any such diversion had occurred.

"At the moment, the entire non-conventional weapons system is under the full control of the regime," a senior Israeli defense official, Amos Gilad, told Israel Radio.

Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said the army would not use chemical weapons to crush rebels but could use them against forces from outside the country.

The Global Security website, which collects published intelligence reports and other data, says there are four suspected chemical weapons sites in Syria: north of Damascus, near Homs, in Hama and near the Mediterranean port of Latakia. Weapons it produces include the nerve agents VX, sarin and tabun, it said, without citing its sources.
