Jason Garrett: We love having Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle visit Valley Ranch

IRVING ? Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle has come by Valley Ranch a few times over the last couple of years.

He has attended practices and sat in on coaching meetings. And according to Cowboys coach Jason Garrett, the team loves having him.

?Rick just likes to come by,? Garrett said Saturday. ?He and I have gotten to know each other over the last couple of years. He?s a good friend and a great resource. He loves sports.?

Garrett said Carlisle also spoke this summer at an annual football camp that Garrett hosts at Princeton University.

?He?s had a ton of success through his career, both as a player and as a coach,? Garrett said. ?I told him he?s more than welcome to come here anytime he wants to be here. We love having him around.?

Michael Richards still 'busted up' after 'n-word' tirade

Crackle

Michael Richards, left, and Jerry Seinfeld chat about working together on "Seinfeld" in the last installment of the web series "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee."

By Courtney Hazlett, TODAY

Jerry Seinfeld's web series "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" has been a reliably hilarious glimpse into the world of Seinfeld and his famous comedian-type friends. But the recent installment, starring former "Seinfeld" co-star Michael Richards takes?a decidedly more serious turn.

If you recall, Richards was caught on tape at an L.A. comedy club responding to hecklers in the audience with a shockingly racist tirade, calling the hecklers the "n-word" and referencing a time when blacks were often victims of civil rights abuses. The fallout was immediate -- the public turned against him and he apologized, but Richards tells Seinfeld the wounds are still very present.

"I think I worked selfishly, and not selflessly," Richards said of his time on "Seinfeld." "It's not about me, it's about them (the audience). That's the lesson I learned seven years ago when I blew it in the comedy club and lost my temper because somebody interrupted my act and said some things that hurt me and I lashed out in anger. I should have been working selflessly at that time."?

Richards then clarified that the rumor that he'd done several comedy sets since is not true. "No. I busted up after that event. It broke me down. It was a selfish response, I took it too personally. I should have said (to the hecklers), 'You're absolutely right, I'm not funny, I'm going to go home' ... Inside it still kicks me around a bit."?

"That's up to you," Seinfeld replied to Richards, who he's stood behind throughout the incident. "It's up to you to say 'I've been carrying this bag long enough, I'm going to put it down.'"

At this point it's interesting to note that unlike any of the previous episodes of "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee," this one begins with a caveat: "Certain events in this episode seem set up. They were not." Whether that applies to a strange mix-up at the beginning of the show when Richards and Seinfeld think they're knocking on boxing great Sugar Ray Leonard's door (it's actually the home of actor/comedian Jay Mohr) or Richards' candid remarks, or both -- who knows? But, one thing is certain: the incident in the club has forever impacted Richards. Where the rest of the "Seinfeld" cast has moved on, he's still struggling with that one awful night.

Nations attempt to unite Syria's fragmented opposition, see growing role for local councils

Efforts to draw together the fragmented foes of Syrian President Bashar Assad could lead to direct talks between the leader's regime and his opponents, a key official said after talks on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari on Friday proposed plans to broker discussions for a political transition in Syria ? amid the paralysis at the U.N. Security Council which has cast a pall over the annual gathering of world leaders in New York.

Zebari told The Associated Press in an interview that he made the offer to bring together Syria's regime and opposition at a meeting Friday between nine representatives of anti-Assad groups and the Friends of Syria ? a coalition which includes the United States, the European Union and the Arab League.

He acknowledged that the U.N. and Arab League joint envoy on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, would need to take the plan forward.

Establishing a more coherent opposition is seen as a means of increasing pressure on the Syrian leadership amid Russia and China's decisions to veto three Western-backed resolutions aimed at forcing Assad to end the violence.

Rebels on Friday made their broadest assault yet to drive Assad's forces out of Aleppo, Syria's largest city. Activists claim that since the 18-month-old conflict began, more than 30,000 people have been killed in the fighting.

Syria's opposition has been criticized as hopelessly fractured and unable to coalesce around a transition plan that was adopted by members of the U.N. Security Council in Geneva over the summer, though Western officials say they are beginning to see tentative signs of progress.

Revolutionary councils in cities including Damascus, Homs, Aleppo, Idlib and Deir al-Zour are becoming increasingly organized, U.S. officials insist. In Idlib, in northwestern Syria, and Deir al-Zour, in the country's east, the local councils are taking charge of municipal duties, restoring power supplies and cleaning streets.

Talks Friday focused on efforts to boost co-operation between the rival groups, provide them with millions of dollars more in non-lethal equipment, and help them cement authority in areas freed from the Assad regime's control.

"It is encouraging to see some progress toward greater opposition unity, but we all know there is more work to be done," U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told the meeting.

Mouaz Moustafa, a 27-year-old activist with the Washington-based "Coalition for a Democratic Syria," which lobbies on behalf of the civilian councils and was involved in the talks, said the local groups could provide the roots of a post-Assad Syria if they are supported with funding.

"It will be undermined if it's not coupled with financial support," he said. "You have civilian councils right now. If you don't help them, you miss an opportunity. Without money, they lose credibility, viability and power."

He said in one instance, France had supplied about $13,000 to the Maarat al-Nuaman civilian council, in northwestern Syria, which allowed them to clean streets, rebuild a bread factory and pay for policemen.

Moustafa said the councils were crucial for the country to re-emerge under civilian rule. If they failed, it would risk emboldening military commanders to create their own fiefdoms in liberated areas, or Islamic extremists ? better armed and with money ? to set up their own power centres.

U.S. officials acknowledged the importance of helping civilian activists, rather than fighters, to prepare to provide services when the country's leadership falls.

"People with guns who don't know how to have bread baked are quickly going to lose credibility on the street. People with guns who can't make the lights come back on are going to quickly lose credibility on the street," said a senior U.S. official, who was not authorized to publicly discuss details of the talks.

During talks Friday, Clinton pledged $15 million in new non-lethal equipment ? mainly communications equipment ? and $30 in million humanitarian assistance to Syria's opposition. In total, the U.S. has offered $130 million in humanitarian supplies and about $40 million in equipment such as including satellite-linked computers, telephones and cameras. Britain and France have also offered millions of dollars worth of aid supplies and equipment.

At the General Assembly on Friday, Turkey's foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu warned of the risks that Syria's civil war could spread to other Middle East nations. "The Syrian regime deploys every instrument to turn the legitimate struggle of the Syrian people into a sectarian war, which will engulf the entire region into flames," he said.

On Saturday, nations including Uruguay, Denmark, Portugal, Sudan and Angola were scheduled to address the assembly.

The biennial matches, which began in 1927, were the brainchild of Samuel Ryder, who brought top golfers from the US and Great Britain together to compete in team match play.

Over the years, the US has captured 25 Ryder Cups. The team that first represented Great Britain and Ireland began to add golfers from the European continent in 1979, and has won 11 Ryder Cups, with two ties.

The format of the Ryder Cup is a team competition, consisting of two-man alternate shot foursomes and two-man four-ball or best ball Friday and Saturday. In four-ball, each golfer plays his own ball. The player with the best score on any given hole between the twosome is the score that is recorded for his team. Sunday consists of a dozen singles matches. All competition is match play.

The US team is captained by Davis Love III, who has represented the United States in Ryder Cup play in the past. Michael Jordan, a Chicago sports icon and golf enthusiast, will be a special team advisor to Love. Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships in the 1990s. Love and Jordan's friendship goes back to their days as classmates at the University of North Carolina in the early 1980s.

As in the past few Ryder Cups, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will lead the American side. Earlier this week, Tiger shouldered the blame for the US not winning more Ryder Cups in the last few years, reports CBSSports.com.

Hot Bots: How Arduino Teaches Kids the Science behind Modern Gizmos

Guest post by Michael R. Duffey

There is a wide variety of creative projects which can help introduce children to the world of microcontrollers.? A microcontroller is simply a small computer that can interact with the outside world.? It can connect different types of ?inputs? (such as sensing a motion, force, or temperature change) to ?outputs? (turn on a light, start a motor, make a sound).? Microcontrollers are not just the brains of robots, in the rather quaint way that most of us still think of walking/talking robotic creatures.? Microcontrollers are embedded everywhere in household appliances, cars, and children?s toys.? When your child squeezes a battery powered doll to make it talk??? Microcontroller.? When you make coffee in that fancy new coffee maker or control the temperature on your new household thermostat?? Microcontroller.?? With some simple projects, children can take a first step toward understanding the basic hardware and software concepts that underlie so much of the technology they encounter in their daily lives.? For parents who find modern gizmos mysterious (and, let?s face it, sometimes intimidating!) these introductory projects can be insightful as well.

There are several children?s toy-building environments that utilize programmable microcontrollers (such as Lego Mindstorms or Fischertechnik). There are also do-it-yourself microcontroller systems used for years by hobbyists and tech-savvy kids (such as the BASIC Stamp kits available at Radio Shack stores).

But the type of microcontroller that is gaining favor rapidly for creative older children?s projects is known as an ?arduino.?? An arduino microcontroller is based on an ?open source? (non-commercial, publicly-licensed) design, and many small companies have sprung up recently to fabricate arduinos and related step-by-step project kits and accessories.? Free software for programming arduinos is available for most laptop computers, which then connect to the arduino to download programs.? The? ?Make? community (organizer of the wildly popular ?Maker Faire? events, and the online Makezine) has embraced arduinos, and their web page is probably as good a place to start as any (blog.makezine.com/arduino).? For girls who might appreciate a very cool, geeky female role model in this traditionally male domain, check out Lady Ada. Lady Ada (a/k/a Limor Fried) is a recent MIT masters graduate who started her own company selling arduino-related kits with easy-to-follow online instructions.

The first introductory project everyone does with an arduino is called ?Blink.?? There are step-by-step instructions for Blink from many different online sources.? It involves programming a microcontroller to simply blink an LED (light emitting diode) on and off.? The book ?Getting Started with Arduino? is a good entry point.? Starting with the Blink example, one can incrementally move up to more complex projects with small motors, lights and various types of sensors. ?The book and accompanying beginner?s kits are available from many sources such as Sparkfun.? Blinking jewelry and clothing, talking teddy bears, halloween robot monsters?..you?ll find all sorts of creative applications via Make and other websites, including help forums and step-by-step youtube videos.? Be forewarned, however, that tinkering with arduinos takes patience as you learn to navigate thru the minor troubleshooting issues that arise.? Like much of engineering, there?s nothing terribly forbidding here as long as you tackle the little problems incrementally and cultivate your own innate common sense.? Just the right type of challenge for the budding engineer!

ABI Research: LTE subscriptions surpassed WiMAX usage in Q2 2012

WiMAX isn't exactly a fading technology, but LTE is more and more the name of the mobile connectivity game -- at least in Japan, South Korea and the US. That's what ABI Research gleaned from its "4G Subscribers, Devices and Networks" market data: according to the study the number of LTE subscribers in Japan, South Korea and the US shot past that of WiMAX users in the last quarter of 2011 through to quarter two of 2012. The firm says 77 percent of LTE devices were smartphones in 2011, and it projects that LTE handsets will make up more than 80 percent of device shipments in 2016. ABI says LTE's advantage will grow in the next few years, as more mobile operators roll out TD-LTE networks, and as we begin to see more LTE chipsets hit the market. Head past the break for the press release.

Dating: Rejected By Her | Better After 50

I realize that the odds of her calling or emailing me are slightly less than the odds of Mitt Romney standing in line to buy an Extra Value Meal. And yet I can?t go two hours without thinking about her. Every morning, I run to the computer hoping there will be a message from her. Every time the phone rings, I imagine it?s going to be her voice on the other end of the line.

But it isn?t. And it won?t be. She stopped returning messages many months ago. I really thought she was the love of my post-divorce life, but as it turns out, I was just the like of hers. I want to say that I?ve been able to get over that pain of having my heart discarded by someone I cared about, but the truth is, I still haven?t. Trust me, I know that breakups happen all the time. Still, there is something about romantic rejection after divorce that seems to carry an extra sting that I never anticipated.

I?d had my heart broken plenty of times before I got married. For every sad split, though, I was young and/or foolish enough to figure that there would be another house party or bar night next week where I could start the process over again. When I was single and in my 20s, whether I was bailing on somebody or she was bailing on me, rejection was a plus in some ways. First, it was like a spiritual reset button, allowing you to enjoy the endless possibilities of singlehood. And second, learning to lose is simply good training for later in life.

It?s all about trial and error; the trials are more fun, while the errors are less serious. Then you get married, and rejection takes on an entirely different, and much less redeeming, meaning. The whole rationale behind committing yourself to matrimony is that you?ll never have to be shot down by a potential partner again. You agree to that whole ??till death do us part? thing, which allows you to worry about kids, mortgages and choosing between satellite and cable TV services rather than who you?ll be breaking up with next.

Then, for 50 percent of us, divorce comes along. It doesn?t matter whether you?re instigating the end of the marriage or the one on the receiving end. This Super Bowl of all rejections erases any illusion of comfort when you start dating again. It?s like being in a car accident. You get back behind the wheel to drive again, but you always remember that sick feeling of impact and flinch just a little whenever you?re driving in traffic.

It?s hard not to feel a little bit wary after going all in on a relationship post-divorce. Not only have you experienced the biggest breakup of your life, you?re also most likely at an age where finding a second serious partner is much more difficult. Even with all the single soccer moms and weekend dads out there now, the pickings are still slimmer than they were when you were younger. That puts more pressure on ensuring that any relationship you do get involved in works out. Which, in turn, makes you feel like even more of a schmo when rejection happens.

And I?ve had that feeling plenty of times these past few years. There were the dozens of unreturned Match.com messages, the calls from the ones who did get back to me that ended with them saying ?I?ll check my schedule and get back to you,? the set-up dates who allowed me to buy them a few dinners and get a couple of front-seat make-out sessions in before ignoring my calls, the artist I saw for a couple of months until she texted her breakup.

I?m sure there were reasons for my various dismissals, at least half of which are probably valid. I could have been too short, too old, too obsessed with the Boston Red Sox, too consumed with my own jokes ? I?ll never really know, although maybe that?s for the best. At least I know why I rejected all the women who were interested in me, even if I never expressed that reason at the end of every coffee meet-up where I was more attracted to my iced latte than to the woman I was with, and every set-up date with a sweet but laughter-challenged companion.

It was because of her, the aforementioned woman who became everything to me. For a little while anyway. She had all the qualities that allowed me stop to worrying about the sadness that comes with divorce: beauty, humor, intelligence, style and an interest in me. And now all I have left is the vision problem she left me with: All I see when looking at other women is her. Or, rather, all the qualities that aren?t her.

I realize that I shouldn?t be taking the rejection so seriously. It just happens sometimes. And no matter who or what caused your divorce, the end result is that it should be viewed as liberation rather than punishment. It?s the chance to have some later-in-life freedom that your married friends no doubt envy and a time to explore many relationships rather than quickly settling back into another one.

Besides, while rejection does suck, you can?t feel the hurt if you didn?t feel an attraction first. Feeling that connection for somebody new is the best sign that you?re moving on with your life. I?m trying to move forward. For the first time in a year, I had a second date with someone and am actually looking forward to a third. (Which, I realize, could be setting me up for more memories of her and, ultimately, more rejection.)

Still, I?m going to use G. Gordon Liddy as my romantic guidance counselor. To prove his toughness, Liddy would apparently hold his hand over a candle until his palm burned. When asked if his stunt hurt, he?d say ?Yes, but the trick was to not mind the pain.? That is the perfect dating advice for anyone as consumed with rejection as I am. Sure, being on either end of getting dumped feels extra lousy when you?re still coping with the impact of divorce. The trick is not minding it.

Boxee?s Video-Sharing Service Cloudee Goes Public With Desktop Software, iPhone 5 Support & More

cloudee-mobileThe service operates in a crowded space, where dozens upon dozens of apps offer ways to stream, record, broadcast, and/or share video recorded on mobile, but Cloudee's niche was in the emerging "private sharing" space. That trend has more recently taken root as companies try to find new ways to engage in a social networking arena dominated by the likes of Facebook. Cloudee, then, put its focus on selective sharing. Videos can be uploaded from the mobile apps, and now the desktop, organized into folders, and then users choose which family and friends are permitted to view them. The service also nicely ties into Boxee's main offering, the connected device known as Boxee Box, as it was one of the places where the videos could be viewed, in addition to be viewed within the app or browser.

Inside Philanthropy: When it comes to charity beware of your heart!

GUEST BLOG

Philip D Harvey

When I was a young man in the 1960?s an incident occurred in the state of Punjab, in India, that has profoundly affected my views about charity ever since.? As a field officer for CARE, I had helped arrange for a shipment of food to a Punjabi village that had been devastated by floods.? As I carried out my duties, seeing that the food was properly stored, prepared, and provided to all comers, a woman in a ragged sari, carrying a baby, broke away from the queue where the villagers waited their turn for the only meal they would have that day.? Moving urgently, she came up to me, knelt, bowed and touched her forehead to my shoes.? I was appalled.? That this woman who had no doubt struggled all her life to bear and raise her children, sacrificing heroically to keep her family alive, should express this form of gratitude to a middle class foreigner who?d always had plenty of everything, struck me as terribly wrong.

After my emotional turmoil abated, I determined that, if I was going to devote my career to helping people, it would have to be in ways that did not involve even the possibility of gratitude from those who might benefit from my efforts.

I?ll tell you how I resolved that dilemma in a minute.? First, three lessons I have learned along the way.

First, don?t respond too quickly to emotional appeals.? If a charity prints ads or letters that tug at the heartstrings, the chances are that the charity is adequately funded by others.? While those appealing children?s eyes, or heart-rending disfigurements, may promote perfectly valid charitable causes, they may also mask inefficiencies.??? The fund-raising appeals must be paid for, after all. ?And there?s another reason.? These high-appeal (and sometimes low-need) charities should take a back seat to equally worthy but less appealing causes.? Mitigating the effects of infant diarrhea, for example, or providing contraceptives to couples in Africa are causes that don?t have much emotional pull.? If you focus on those kinds of charities you?ll be filling an important gap.? And, if you are going to donate your hard-earned dollars, spend a few minutes researching worthwhile causes; it will pay off.

Second, avoid seeking gratitude.? While most of us would be embarrassed by what happened to me in India, there is still a strong temptation to want to be thanked for our charitable contributions.? That?s fine if it comes from the president of the Red Cross, but if you find yourself looking for a thank-you from the ultimate beneficiaries of your largesse, be careful.? ?We all enjoy that nice glow that comes from helping others, but the glow can be deceptive.? A spontaneous dollar to a panhandler, for example, only reinforces a phenomenon that might better be discouraged. Take time to give this some thought. Especially when it comes to helping the poor, our emotions get pulled into the equation and our feelings can get in the way of rational deliberation.? That?s a good time to step back and ask some questions about the charity?s impact and efficiency, keeping the emotional factors in the background.

Third, think of your charitable donations as investments in a better world.? Does the charity deliver measurable outputs at a reasonable cost? Can these costs be compared to other organizations? Does your charity publish its tax returns on its website or provide information to rating agencies like Charity Navigator?? Finally, does it make a difference on a significant scale?

It can be argued that this is too hard-boiled, too unemotional.? I don?t believe it.? Our emotional lives should be focused on people we know.? Our charitable contributions should go to organizations that appeal to our heads and not our hearts.

Philip D. Harvey helped found DKT International and serves as its President. DKT provides low cost contraceptives to people in developing countries through shops and kiosks as well as clinics in sixteen countries. The idea is to make contraceptives attractive and convenient.? ?

Major security vulnerability in some Samsung phones could trigger factory reset via web page

Samsung Reset

Update, 09/26: Samsung has told us that the latest Galaxy S3 firmware fixes this exploit. Our own testing has shown other phones, particularly Galaxy S2 models, may still be at risk, however. If you're still concerned, you can check our USSD vulnerability test to see if your phone is vulnerable.

A major security vulnerability has been discovered in some TouchWiz-based Samsung smartphones, including the Galaxy S2 and certain Galaxy S3 models on older firmware. The bug was first demonstrated days ago by security researcher Ravi Borgaonkar at the Ekoparty security conference. It involves the use of a single line of code in a malicious web page to immediately trigger a factory reset without prompting the user, or allowing them to cancel the process. Even more serious is the possibility that this could be paired with a similar glitch to render the user's SIM card inoperable. And as the malicious code is in URI form, it can also be delivered via NFC or QR code.

Our Verizon Galaxy S3 was not reset by the malicious code embedded in a web page, though we were able to trigger a reset using similar code tied to a hyperlink. Mobile dev Justin Case tells us the issue is fixed in the latest AT&T and international Galaxy S3 firmwares, though devices that have not been updated may remain vulnerable. Others have reported that devices like the Galaxy Ace and Galaxy Beam are also affected. As far as we can tell, though, the bug does not affect Samsung phones running stock Android, like the Galaxy Nexus.

The vulnerability is the result of the way the native Samsung dialer app handles USSD codes and telephone links. USSD codes are special combinations of characters that can be entered in the keypad to perform certain functions, like enabling call forwarding, or accessing hidden menus on the device. On Samsung phones, there's also a USSD code for factory resetting the phone (and presumably another for nuking your SIM). This, combined with the fact that the dialer automatically runs telephone links that are passed to it by other apps, results in a particularly nasty issue for anyone unfortunate enough to run by a malicious web page.

There are, of course, other applications of this glitch -- for example, the ability to automatically run numbers through the dialer could be used to call premium-rate phone numbers. But the fact that just visiting a web site could factory reset your phone, wipe your internal storage and nuke your SIM is a very serious issue. So we'd advise you update your software if you're running an S3, and if you're not, we'd recommend using a third-party dialer like Dialer One until all this has blown over.

Internet marketing news roundup, September 24

Published on

Twitter?s role as a social media marketing tool grows every day. The microblogging site continues to add users and help consumers connect with each other and brands they love. However, its continued popularity has not stymie innovation, as Twitter announced a redesign last week that made headlines across the web.

Twitter updates and social marketing

The company has spent most of 2012 focused on making its platform more visual and streamlining image sharing on the site. Last Tuesday?s adjustment added a larger spot for banner images on user and brand profiles. Much like Facebook?s cover photo, Pages now include spots for the larger visuals as well as the usual profile picture. Twitter CEO DIck Costolo announced the addition on the Today Show, using the profiles of the show?s hosts, as well as Today?s official Twitter account to highlight the changes.

Brafton reported that the changes will also be apparent on upcoming iterations of Twitter?s mobile site. Focusing on a more visual format across its various apps and sites is part of Twitter?s plan to make a more consistent product available to users, whether they?re accessing their accounts on handsets or laptops. Costolo said during the announcement of the new layout that the goal is to allow both users and brands on the site to convey their personalities more effectively.Twitter layout's received a redesign last week.

Twitter also shared some marketing tips last weekend that could help companies using news content marketing reach more users and build authority. On Thursday, Mark Luckie, Twitter?s creative content manager for journalism and news, detailed the ways companies can learn from publishers using the site to educate and inform their followers.

Brafton highlighted the report on Friday, suggesting that using hashtags, links to other site?s relevant content and Tweets with previews or snippets from upcoming brand content can position companies as true thought leaders in their industries. Connecting with prospects on Twitter is among the site?s greatest benefits, and companies that find interesting and valuable ways to engage followers are those that yield the most traffic and potential conversions from their presence.

Video marketing growth

In terms of engagement, social media marketing isn?t the only channel a business can pursue to drive interest. Video marketing has seen massive growthin 2012, and comScore?s most recent numbers show that the audience for web videos has reached an all-time high. More than 188 million users watched video online in August. These users viewed more than 47 billion pieces of content in the month.

Adding video to a content marketing strategy helps businesses appeal to different prospects who may not be sold by an informative white paper or timely news article. Brafton reported on Friday that video also offers organizations the chance to go viral, citing the case of a how-to video from Jezebel that became one of 2011?s top YouTube videos. The options for a video marketing strategy are as plentiful as the possibilities for written content.

Google, Bing and SEO developments

News content marketing is an ideal fit for businesses looking to improve SEO and thought leadership on the site. Google announced a new feature on Wednesday that could help organizations using news content ensure their articles are appropriately indexed by Google. The ?news_keyword? metatag can be added on the back end of a site to tell Googlebot that a piece of a content is a news article. On the Google News blog, Rudy Galfi, product manager for Google News, said that it?s still important for organizations to focus on high-quality reporting and news to drive clicks through search. However, ensuring their content is analyzed properly by Google will help achieve their goals.

?Keep in mind that this metatag will be one signal among many that our algorithms use to determine ranking. The news_keywords metatag is intended as a tool ? but high-quality reporting and interesting news content remain the strongest ways to put your newsroom?s work in front of Google News users.? ? Rudy Galfi, Product Manager, Google News

Brafton highlighted the report on Thursday, detailing the value of quality news content. As more consumers look to the web to educate themselves prior to making purchases, the presence of timely, industry-focused articles can help push shoppers toward conversion. Additionally, consistently adding news content helps satisfy the technical and user-focused sides of a strong SEO strategy ? providing content people want to read, and adding strong pages to keep search crawlers returning.

Compete.com provided even more motivation for marketers to monitor their standing in search this week, reporting Bing has risen 4.2 percent in the search market in the last year. Google?s 65.7 percent of the market makes it the clear leader in the industry, and most SEO strategies are aimed at performance in the company?s search engine. However, Bing?s slow but steady growth could make it a focal point for organic search marketing campaigns soon.

Brafton compared Compete?s data to a comScore search market analysis unveiled earlier this month. Bing?s surge in market share was less pronounced in comScore?s numbers. However, comScore measured an all-time high in search activity on Bing in August. Even with the reports showing slightly different numbers, it?s clear that Bing has made itself a more prominent option for consumers using search.

Mobile search

One area of search that these reports do not factor into their figures is mobile search, which is helping certain industries drive more relevant traffic and sales. YP Insights released a report last week that found consumers fewer than two miles from a business are nearly 1.5 times more likely to convert after finding the business? location in search than the average users.

On Thursday, Brafton?s breakdown of the report said that it?s especially important for SEO strategies to consider local and mobile users. Adding location-based keywords can help companies drive search position for local searches and win sales online and offline. Moreover, content marketing campaigns can reflect interests of audiences in targeted neighborhoods to maximize local appeal.

As the third quarter of 2012 is approaching its close, the focus for many marketers will turn to a successful holiday shopping season and plans for 2013. While last week may not have seen massive changes to search algorithms or other ground-shaking web marketing developments, the moves from Twitter and different user activity reports show marketers where they may want to focus next quarter for a strong year close.

Venezuela, China sign deal to develop gold mine

Published: Sep 22, 2012 at 3:14 PM MDT
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Chinese and Venezuelan officials signed an agreement Friday to jointly develop one of the world's largest gold mines.

The agreement to develop Las Cristinas gold mine was signed by officials of the Venezuelan government and the Chinese company China International Trust and Investment Corp., or Citic. The mine in southern Bolivar state has been estimated to hold about 17 million ounces of gold.

President Hugo Chavez called it an agreement to begin exploiting both gold and copper deposits at the mine. He called Las Cristinas "one of the biggest reservoirs of gold that exists ? not only in Venezuela, not only in Latin America, but in the world."

Officials didn't discuss financial details of the agreement but said it specifies engineering, construction and processing of the gold and copper. Chavez said officials also signed an agreement to produce a map of mineral deposits in the South American country.

He announced the deals after a meeting with Chinese officials at the presidential palace. Chavez said they also agreed to deepen cooperation in Venezuela's oil industry.

China's ties with Venezuela have grown rapidly in recent years. China also has become the country's biggest creditor, offering Chavez's government more than $36 billion in loans, which are being paid off largely with increasing oil shipments.

Last year, Toronto-based Crystallex International Corp. said it sought international arbitration after Venezuela rescinded its contract to develop Las Cristinas mine. The company said it had appealed to a World Bank arbitration body, claiming it was due $3.8 billion in compensation.

US Airline Pilots Get iPads But Flight Attendants Get Galaxy Notes

American Airlines has been making the move to digital by giving their pilots iPads instead of paper heavy manuals and the upgrading doesn?t stop there. American Airlines wants their flight attendants outfitted with tech, but they won?t be handing out more full-size tablets. They?re going with the Galaxy Note.

The Note was chosen after a pilot program (heh) in which attendants stated a preference for the Samsung phablet because it has a fairly large display, but can still be held in one hand, and unlike a tablet, it can be slipped into a pocket. Like the pilots, the flight attendants will also have some manuals replaced by the device. It?s also worth mentioning that, while technically a phone, as far as American Airlines is concerned, the Notes are just very small tablets, and they make no mention of the whole mobile phone thing, only the Wi-Fi capabilities.

The airline is set to deploy 17,000 of the devices through mid-2013 and reach 91 per cent ?Wi-Fi readiness? by the end of the year. [American Airlines via Computer World]

#ScratchGate: iPhone 5 Owners Are Discovering Aluminum Is Softer Than Glass

iphoneThe iPhone 5 hit stores last Friday. It's the lightest, thinnest, most sleek iPhone yet. But owners are quickly discovering that with those advantages, there are some inherent downsides. The slender iPhone 5 has an anodized aluminum backplate rather than one made of Corning glass as in the iPhone 4/4S. And since aluminum is a relatively soft material, the iPhone 5 shows more wear and tear than previous models. The iPhone 4 was a magnet for fingerprints. The iPhone 5 attracts scratches and scrapes nearly as easily.

Orange Bowl deal helps spur playoff rotation tweak

A pending deal to restrict access to the Orange Bowl is one of the key reasons conference commissioners are leaning toward adding another game to the new college football postseason system.

The original plan for the four-team playoff that will replace the Bowl Championship Series in 2014 called for the national semifinals rotating among six marquee bowls games.

Now it looks as if the rotation will consist of seven games. The conference commissioners and Notre Dame's athletic director met in Chicago earlier this week and tweaking the original proposal to add another game was discussed.

"I think there is enough support for it to make it happen," Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson said in a telephone interview Friday.

The Orange Bowl is working on an agreement that would match Notre Dame or a Big Ten or Southeastern Conference team against an Atlantic Coast Conference team during seasons the game doesn't host a national semifinal.

That deal was first reported by ESPN.com, but hasn't been finalized.

The ACC signed a 12-year agreement with the Orange Bowl this year that starts in 2014.

That would mean three of the six games ? the Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl (Pac-12 and Big Ten) and the bowl that will eventually become the so-called Champions Bowl between the Big 12 and SEC ? wouldn't be accessible to teams outside the five power conferences in years in which they do not host a semifinal.

Another game creates two more available spots in high-revenue games for teams from the Big East, the Sun Belt Conference, the Mountain West, Conference USA and the Mid-American Conference.

"I think It's a very positive for the Sun Belt," Benson said.

Another person who took part in the meetings earlier this week told the AP that the commissioners also discussed guaranteeing a spot each year in the five big games that do not host a semifinal to the highest-ranked champion of those five conferences.

"I think that's something you'll see become a reality," the person said.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about the plans.

The could be a boon for the rebuilding Big East, which will add Boise State and five others next season to create a 12-team, coast-to-coast football conference. The elimination of automatic BCS bids hurt the Big East more than any other conference, but it still looks to be in position to be the best of the rest, and by being so its champion wouldn't be left out of the biggest bowl games in that system.

A selection committee will be used to pick and seed the four playoff teams, and fill the remaining bowl spots.

The coming Orange Bowl deal isn't the only reason adding another game is being strongly considered.

Interest in being part of the new postseason system has been strong among bowl organizers and there is no shortage of qualified candidate cities. The other current BCS games, the Fiesta Bowl and the Sugar Bowl, are almost certain to remain part of the new lineup.

The Cotton Bowl held at Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, along with groups from Atlanta, San Antonio and Houston have submitted requests for proposal to host the Big 12-SEC game. The Sugar Bowl in New Orleans also is in the running to host that game, and considered the front-runner along with Arlington.

Another game would also mean more television revenue. As it is the new system is expected to at least double and possibly triple the value of the current BCS, which ESPN pays $155 million per year for the right to broadcast.

Suspect in Mekong massacre pleads guilty in Chinese court

Suspects involved in murders of 13 Chinese sailors on the Mekong River are on trial as police officers sit guard behind them at a court in Kunming, Yunnan province September 20, 2012. ? Reuters pic

BEIJING, Sept 23 ? A Burmese drug runner and five members of his gang have pleaded guilty in a Chinese court to murdering 13 Chinese sailors on the Mekong River, state media said, in a case that has marked China?s growing law enforcement role beyond its borders.

Naw Kham was extradited to China by Laos officials in May, the chief suspect in the killings of Chinese boat crews last year in the ?Golden Triangle? region known for drug smuggling where the borders of Laos, Myanmar and Thailand meet.

It was one of the deadliest assaults on Chinese nationals overseas in modern times and caused Beijing to send gunboat patrols to the region downstream from its borders.

Naw Kham, in his 40s, pleaded guilty at the Intermediate People?s Court of Kunming in southwest China during a two-day trial in which he ?expressed his penitence to the victims and their families?, the official Xinhua news agency said late on Friday.

?Prosecutors showed irrefutable and sufficient evidence of the criminal offences, including the six defendants? confessions, witness testimonies, DNA test results, and autopsy reports.?

Naw Kham denied plotting the attack on Thursday, but the five other defendants, all foreign nationals, testified that he was the gang?s leader, the news agency said.

The six suspects faced charges of intentional homicide, drug trafficking, kidnapping and hijacking. The court has yet to announce a date for the sentencing.

Xinhua said Naw Kham was ?hoping for leniency? and that the other defendants were ?begging for lighter punishment? in pleading guilty.

The 13 Chinese sailors aboard two cargo ships were killed after being hijacked on a lawless stretch of the Mekong River last October.

A Reuters investigation in January showed that some, if not all, of the sailors were still alive when their boats crossed into Thailand, and that they were executed and tossed overboard inside Thai territory.

The Mekong snakes from China into Southeast Asia, where it forms the border between Myanmar and Laos, and then Thailand and Laos.

In 2001, the four countries signed an agreement to regularise shipping on the river.

All Chinese shipping on the Mekong was suspended after the murders, which sparked outrage in China. The incident was followed by Chinese patrols and strengthened security cooperation among the four countries.

The patrols have been seen as an expansion of Beijing?s growing role in regional security, extending its law enforcement down the highly strategic waterway and into Southeast Asia.? ? Reuters

(AP) ? EJ Manuel knew that Florida State's offense had a tough job to do, keeping pace with Clemson's face-paced and potent attack.

Slowed by a costly fumble and two missed field goals in the first half, the fourth-ranked Seminoles used a 35-3 run in a 20-minute span of the second half Saturday night to remain unbeaten with a 49-37 over 10th-ranked Clemson.

"We just knew we had to keep scoring points to help our defense out," Manuel said. "Those guys (Clemson), they could throw up 50 points easily."

The biggest Atlantic Coast Conference game in years was a wild one for a while before Manuel put the Seminoles' offense into high gear to away.

Seminoles (4-0, 2-0) emerged as national contenders for the first time in a long time, since Bobby Bowden was directing Florida State in the early 2000s, and Manuel will likely start showing up prominently on more than a few Heisman Trophy watch lists.

Clemson (3-1, 0-1) built a 28-14 lead early in the third quarter on a 52-yard pass from All-American receiver Sammy Watkins to Andre Ellington before the Seminole explosion.

"The game got away from us.... We have to stay focused," Clemson's Andre Ellington said.

The two teams combined for 1,093 yards offense as Clemson put up 426 yards against the nation's top-ranked defense.

Manuel was brilliant, completing 27 of 35 passes for a career-high 380 yards while rushing for another 102 to become the first Seminole quarterback since Charlie Ward in 1992 to pass for more than 300 yards and run for over 100 in a game.

"They were mixing up looks and bringing in blitzes from everywhere and he made plays when he had to," said Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher, in his third season as Bowden's successor. "I don't remember him making a bad decision all night."

Manuel got plenty of help from the tailback tandem of Chris Thompson and James Wilder Jr., who each scored twice and accounted for 168 more rushing yards with Thompson's 103 giving him 300 in two ACC games.

"We couldn't stop the run," Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. "Right there at the end, the momentum change late in the third quarter going into the fourth quarter, we just weren't able to turn it back."

Florida State trailed until late in the third quarter, taking its first lead at 35-31 on Manuel's 29-yard touchdown pass to Rodney Smith. The Seminoles, who finished with 667 yards, built a 49-31 lead before Clemson scored late.

Florida State had another 211 yards in punt and kickoff returns, including a 90-yard kickoff return by Lamarcus Joyner that set up Manuel's touchdown throw to Rashad Greene that brought the Seminoles to within 31-28.

"That was two very good football teams throwing haymakers at each other right from the opening bell," Fisher said. "I can't say enough about our player's ability to overcome adversity."

Florida State, which just missed scoring 50 or more points for a fourth straight game, is averaging 56.2 points and 574.5 yards offense a game as it prepares to step out of conference play next weekend at South Florida.

The first half was eerily similar to last year's game at Clemson when the Tigers rolled up 443 yards and 26 first downs in a 35-30 win when Manuel was sidelined with a shoulder injury.

The two teams combined for 361 yards offense in a wild first quarter Saturday.

The Tigers needed just 86 seconds to reach the end zone as DeAndre Hopkins blew past Florida State safety Terrence Brooks on a 60-yard scoring bomb from Tajh Boyd ? the first touchdown scored against the Seminole defense this season. But more were to come.

A trick play set up Clemson's second TD, a 6-yard run by Ellington. Darrell Smith got a yard on a shovel pass from holder Spencer Benton on a fake field goal from the Florida State 15 two plays earlier.

Yet another trick play gave Clemson its 28-14 lead when Watkins took a lateral from Boyd and then threw back across the field to Ellington on a 52-yard scoring play. Although Watkins had 109 all-purpose yards, he was kept out of the end zone.

But Florida State responded quickly, sandwiching a pair of TDs around a 50-yard field goal by Clemson's Chandler Catanzaro.

Clemson led 21-14 at the half, capitalizing on a fumble by Greene to score the go-ahead touchdown on a 17-yard pass from Boyd to Brandon Ford.

Boyd completed 20 of 36 passes for 237 yards and three touchdowns for Clemson.
