Addiction Inbox: Looking For the Science Behind the Twelve Steps

Transcendence, or nonsense?

What is it with the Twelve Steps? How, in the age of neuromedicine, do we account for the enduring concept of spiritual awakening available through ?working the steps?? In Hijacking the Brain, Dr. Louis Teresi, former chief of neuroradiology at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, along with Dr. Harry Haroutunian of the Betty Ford Center, sets themselves a formidable goal: ?The sole intention of Hijacking the Brain is to connect the dots between an ?organic brain disease? and a ?spiritual solution? with sound physical, scientific evidence.? (For those who have grown weary of the overuse of ?hijacked? brains in science writing, Teresi notes that an earlier term for the same idea was ?commandeered.?)

Twelve Step programs remain popular, work for some addicts, and have their very vocal advocates in the recovery community. Outsiders are sometimes surprised to learn, writes Keith Humphreys, research scientist with the Veterans Health Administration and a professor at Stanford, that many of the people most profoundly and successfully affected by the 12-Step Program had ?little or no interest in spirituality.?

The primary manifestation of this is the Twelve-Step Facilitation model (TSF), or Minnesota model, in honor of the Hazelden treatment facility in that state. Put simply, how do we go about explaining, in scientific terms, how a program like AA can have direct effects on a disease of the brain?

According to one strongly held view, we can?t. If there is something spiritual about recovery, it?s not anything that a medical doctor, who should have oversight of drug recovery and treatment programs, ought to be directly concerned with. Since the Twelve Step principles are explicitly spiritual in nature, how they apply to an organic brain disease is not at all clear. If you have cancer, your oncologists first line of thought is not usually, ?why don?t you join a self-help group?? Writing for The Fix, health journalist Maia Szalavitz notes that ?for no other medical disorder is meeting and praying considered reimbursable treatment: if a doctor recommended these religious or spiritual practices for the primary treatment of cancer or depression, you would be able to sue successfully for malpractice.??

At an immediate level, the ?power of the group,? which AA and other Twelve-Step Programs seems to tap into isn?t so hard to understand. Here are some of the obvious advantages of group work, as Teresi sees it:

--A reduction in the sense of isolation addicts feel.
--Useful information for addicts who are new to the processes of recovery.
--A way for people to see how others have dealt with similar problems.
--Additional structure and discipline for people whose living situations are often chaotic.

Teresi follows a common methodology, splitting the question into three dimensions: physical (an ?allergy of the body driven by exaggerated limbic activity), mental (cognitive obsessions and compulsive drug use), and spiritual (an existential dilemma; a malady of the ?soul?.) But the ?spiritual awakening? that relieves this feeling and allows the addict to enter sobriety remains maddeningly ineffable: ?The personality change sufficient to bring about recovery from alcoholism (addiction) has manifested itself among us in many different forms,? the Big Book cryptically affirms.

What makes it click for many addicts is what Teresi terms ?empathic socialization,? defined as follows: ?Positive socializing experiences received in support and therapeutic groups, such as praise, affection and empathic understanding, activate the brain?s reward centers as much as other natural rewards and similar to addictive substances. More importantly, belonging to an empathetic group reduces stress, a predominant cause and catalyst of addiction.?

Most people have only a hazy idea about what the Twelve Steps entail?something about admitting powerlessness over drugs, making amends for past wrongs, invoking a vague power higher than oneself. And the payoff? The reward for all the strenuous self-searching and personal honesty?

As Teresi sums it up: ?inner peace, freedom, happiness, intuition, and alleviation of fear.? A heady package, indeed. All in return for achieving an emotional state called gratitude. Where are we to find the science in these claims?

Even though he doesn't solve the mystery, Dr. Teresi does offer? thoughts on some of the mechanisms in question, one of which is commonly referred to as an ?attitude of gratitude? among Twelve-Step practitioners. ?Gratitude for blessings received,? as it says the Big Book, is biochemically effective, Teresi argues. ?In this regard,? Teresi writes, ?grateful people show less negative coping strategies; that is, they are less likely to try to avoid the problem, deny there is a problem, blame themselves, or use mood-altering substances. Those with gratitude express more satisfaction with their lives and social relationships.?

And stress is where Dr. Teresi focuses his argument. More precisely, the working of the steps in Alcoholics Anonymous and kindred organizations involves ?letting go? of high-stress states such as fear, guilt, self-loathing, and resentment. In Teresi?s thinking, the ?power of the group? resides in its ability to reduce stress responses?and to raise levels of the ?tend-and befriend? hormone, oxytocin. Oxytocin interacts with dopamine to increase maternal care, social attachments, and other affiliative behaviors and emotions. Thus, social rewards stir up a fair share of dopamine in reward centers of the brain, too. When alcoholics admit to powerlessness over alcohol, they are moving from a state of high autonomic nervous system tone to a more relaxed, ?thank goodness that burden has been dropped? modality. This admission, when made as a conscious cognitive choice, and internalized through repetition and group motivation, lowers blood pressure and stress hormone levels, creating a more relaxed metabolic tone.

That is, in any event, how Teresi sees it. By confronting stress in this fashion, he believes that people with addictions can draw strength from group experience, even in the absence of personal religious belief.

Measures of Twelve-Step success will never be as precise as people would like. Not only does the national organization of AA generally avoid engaging in follow-ups, but the structure, or lack of it, works against precision measurements as well. As Teresi writes, ?Anyone can start a Twelve-Step group by contacting the general service counsel of the organization of their interest, finding a meeting place (sometimes a person?s home) and adopting a readily available meeting protocol.? In fully monetized form, the Twelve Steps become Hazelden, or the Betty Ford Center. In supercharged upper income mode, it?s Passages and Promises. There is more going on here than simply a call to the pre-existing church-going addict. ?AA,? says Keith Humphreys,? ?is thus much more broad in its appeal than is commonly recognized.?

Teresi?s stated goal of connecting the dots isn?t an easy one. AA Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions states unambiguously that the steps are ?a group of principles, spiritual in their nature, which, if practiced as a way of life, can expel the obsession to drink and enable the sufferer to become happily and usefully whole.? In another passage, the Big Book refers to this as a personality change ?sufficient to bring about recovery from alcoholism (addiction).? The explanations and definitions are maddeningly circular?unless you happen to be one of the people for whom the obsession to drink has been expelled through this practices.

Teresi believes it is possible to explore this terrain in a ?belief neutral? manner, ?with findings applicable to those who believe in a single God, multiple gods, or no God at all." Spiritual practices, Teresi believes, promote recovery in three ways. Meditation and some forms of prayer reduce stress levels. Techniques that lower stress have also been shown to stimulate limbic reward centers, ?modulating emotion while strengthening attention and memory.? Finally, ?spiritual practices, through improving morals and interpersonal behavior, foster closeness and a sense of community with one?s fellows and satisfy our instinctual need for social connection, also reducing stress.?

Have Fun Picking Out Your Favorite Hockey Jerseys

Reach "super fan" status with a replica jersey, the ultimate team spirit style statement. Team hockey jerseys - traditionally called "sweaters" - come in a range of licensed fan versions. You'll feel like a first round draft pick when you sport your favorite team's jersey - it's the next best thing to getting out on the ice.

Professional hockey teams keep several different hockey jerseys on rotation, giving you plenty of options for showing your team spirit when purchasing your own. In the NHL, teams wear dark-colored "home" jerseys on home ice, switching to a white "away" jersey when playing on the road. To mix things up a bit, most clubs have an alternate "third jersey" worn 10 to 15 games per season. If your aim is to stand out in a packed arena of fans, an alternate jersey is the way to go.

For the serious hockey fan - the one who already owns a few standard replica hockey jerseys - a practice jersey is a must-have. After all, what better way to feel you're a part of the team than to don the same jersey your favorite player wears to 4 a.m. practices, far from the cheers of fair-weather fans?

Then there's the longtime and loyal supporter, whose team has suddenly attracted a following after an against-all-odds trip to the Stanley Cup Finals. Prove that you're a fan from way back with a retro "throwback" jersey. These vintage-style hockey jerseys resurrect designs from throughout the NHL's nearly century-long history, and are available as officially licensed replicas just like contemporary jerseys.

Of course, not every hockey fan is hockey player-sized. Hockey jerseys designed for women offer a more fitted look, allowing you to show off your team spirit without wearing a bulky jersey that trails past your knees. If you're the proud parent of a pint-sized puck wizard, a youth jersey in your favorite squad's colors gets your young fan off on the right skate.

Customization adds a personal touch to hockey jerseys. When ordering directly through the NHL's official online store, you'll have the opportunity to choose your favorite player from the team roster, and your jersey will display his name and number. Or, personalize your jersey with your own last name and chosen number. That way, you'll never have to worry about your "jersey twin" disappearing before the next trade deadline.

Team hockey jerseys are a collectible item, and after you've purchased one, you expect to be able to display it for many seasons to come. That said, you also fully intend to wear it to the stadium any and every time you get tickets to a home game. Checking for quality and fit is a crucial step in selecting your jersey. Turn a prospective jersey inside out, examining the stitching for sturdy construction - you shouldn't see any loose threads. If possible, try on a jersey in a brick-and-mortar store to get a feel for the fit, even if you ultimately intend to purchase yours online. That way, you'll score yourself a jersey you'll be proud to wear for every puck drop.

Madonna Booed At Concert!

Madonna was booed last night at one of her own concerts for shocker, speaking her mind. That is right apparently some of her fans did not like what the singer had to say and they let her know it. So what did Madge say that made her loyal fans boo her? While performing in New Orleans last night Madonna decided it would be the perfect time to tell her fans who they should vote for, her choice of course Obama. Well some of those fans in the audience were not too thrilled with her suggestion or the fact that she decided to bring up politics at a concert. Although if you are a true Madonna fan you know she does the later all the freaking time, so that should not be very surprising at all. The whole thing started when the singer said the below words to her adoring audience. ?Who?s registered to vote? ?I don?t care who you vote for as long as you vote for Obama.? A pretty bold statement but one that she clearly felt was necessary. Madonna is known for controversy, especially when it comes to politics. I mean if you ever heard her sing “I [...]

(AP) ? Kung Fu Panda, The Freak, The Beard and all their seed-throwing buddies are on top of baseball ? again.

They may be under the radar, unappreciated and unexpected. But they're unassailable, the winner of two World Series titles in the last three years.

Their sweep of the Detroit Tigers, completed Sunday night with a 4-3, 10-inning win, was simply historic.

No National League team had swept a World Series since the 1990 Cincinnati Reds.

No NL team had won twice in a three-year span since the Big Red Machine in 1975-76.

"I'm numb, really, the fact that we've won two World Series in the last three years," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "This will sink in, but right now, I'm kind of speechless on that."

This happens in the NL only slightly more often than appearances of Haley's Comet. They are just the fifth NL team to accomplish the feat since the 1907-08 Chicago Cubs, joining the 1921-22 New York Giants, the St. Louis Cardinals of '44 and '46, the Los Angeles Dodgers of '63 and '65, and that Big Red Machine.

And these Giants did it with small ball, becoming only the fifth big league team ? and the first since the 1982 Cardinals ? to win the title after finishing dead last in home runs during the regular season.

"Our guys had a date with destiny," Giants general manager Brian Sabean said.

Marco Scutaro delivered one more key hit this October, a go-ahead single with two outs in the 10th inning against Phil Coke.

On a night of biting cold, stiff breezes and some rain, the Giants sealed the title when Sergio Romo got Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera to look at strike three for the final out.

"Tonight was a battle," said Giants catcher Buster Posey, the NL batting champion. "And I think tonight was a fitting way for us to end it because those guys played hard. They didn't stop, and it's an unbelievable feeling."

Posey, the only player in the starting lineup when San Francisco win the 2010 clincher at Texas, celebrated with his teammates in the center of the Comerica Park diamond. In the clubhouse, they hoisted the trophy, passed it around and shouted the name of each player who held it.

"World Series champions!" hollered outfielder Hunter Pence, who started the pregame seed-tossing ritual.

Pablo Sandoval, nicknamed Kung Fu Panda, was benched for most of the 2010 Series and then went 8 for 16 this year, including a three-homer performance in Game 1, to win MVP honors.

"I was ready for the moment," he said. "I was waiting for the opportunity to be in the playoffs again."

Cabrera delivered the first big hit for Detroit, interrupting San Francisco's run of dominant pitching with a two-run, wind-blown homer over the right-field wall in the third.

Posey put the Giants ahead 3-2 with a two-run homer in the sixth and Delmon Young hit a tying home run in the bottom half.

San Francisco then won a battle of bullpens.

Ryan Theriot led off the 10th with a single against Phil Coke, moved up on Brandon Crawford's sacrifice and scored on a shallow single by Scutaro, the MVP of the NL championship series. Center fielder Austin Jackson made a throw home, to no avail.

"We were very adamant that we have to step on their throats," Giants pitcher Barry Zito said. "We saw what they did to New York."

Santiago Casilla got one out in the ninth for the win. Romo struck out the side in the bottom of the 10th for his third save of the Series.

The Giants finished the month with seven straight wins and their seventh Series championship. They handed the Tigers their seventh straight World Series loss dating to 2006.

"Obviously, there was no doubt about it," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "It was freaky. I would have never guessed we would have swept the Yankees and I would have never guessed the Giants would have swept us."

The Giants combined for a 1.42 ERA, outscored the Tigers 16-6 and held them to a .159 batting average ? third-lowest in Series history ahead of only the 1966 Baltimore Orioles (.146) and 1966 Dodgers (.142).

"This was the worst day of my career," Tigers catcher Alex Avila said. "They played great, and we didn't. It's that simple."

The NL has won three in a row for the first time in 30 years. San Francisco won six elimination games en route to the title.

Once again, San Francisco took an early lead. Pence hit a one-hop drive over the center-field fence for a double and Brandon Belt tripled off the right-field wall on the next pitch for a 1-0 lead in the second.

The next inning, Cabrera gave the Tigers a reason to think this night might get them back on track to end a title drought dating to 1984.

With two outs and a runner on first, Cabrera lofted an opposite-field fly to right ? off the bat, it looked like a routine out shy of the warning track. But with winds gusting over 25 mph, the ball kept carrying, Pence kept drifting toward the wall and the crowd kept getting louder.

Just like that, it was gone.

Cabrera's homer gave Detroit its first lead of the Series, ended its 20-inning scoreless streak. Trailing for the first time since Game 4 of the NL championship series, Posey and the Giants put a dent in Detroit's optimism. Scutaro led off the sixth with a single and clapped all the way around the bases when Posey sent a shot that sailed just inside the left-field foul pole for a 3-2 lead.

Young, the ALCS MVP against the Yankees, made it 3-all with another opposite-field homer to right, this one a no-doubt drive.

But other Tigers disappointed. Prince Fielder, signed to a $214 million deal last winter, finished 1 for 14 (.071) against the Giants without an RBI. Cabrera, the first Triple Crown winner in 45 years, was 3 for 13 (.231) with three RBIs.

"You just don't get to write your own script," Fielder said.

San Francisco did. The Giants overcame a 2-0 deficit against Cincinnati in the best-of-division series by winning three straight on the road. They overcame a 3-1 hole against defending champion St. Louis in the league championship. And then they became the first champion that hit the fewest home runs in the majors since St. Louis in 1982.

Brian Wilson ? aka The Beard ? missed nearly the entire season. Tim Lincecum ? aka The Freak, was ace of the staff during the 2010 title run. He morphed into a middle reliever who held the Tigers hitless in a pair of outings.

Sandoval said "heart" was the critical ingredient.

"It's amazing what they accomplished," Bochy said. "I think when you look at this club, the terms 'teamwork,' 'team play,' and 'play as a team,' that's used loosely, but these guys truly did. They set aside their own agenda and asked what's best for the club. And we put guys in different roles, nobody ever said a word, complained or anything, and that's the only way it got done."

NOTES: Detroit 2B Omar Infante broke his left hand when he was hit by a pitch from Casilla in the ninth. ... Ann Romney, wife of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, was at the game. ... In addition to the bat Sandoval used for his first two homers in the opener, the Hall of Fame received Ryan Vogelsong's jersey from his Game 3 win, Bochy's warm-up jacket, Gregor Blanco's glove, Pence's bat ? named "Tim" ? Scutaro's spikes, Brandon Crawford's cap and Matt Cain's spikes.

Visitors and Oahu residents watch the ocean water surge into the Ala Wai Harbor carrying various debris during a tsunami Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, in Honolulu. The water dropped about a foot then came up a foot in about 30 seconds. The first waves of a tsunami hitting Hawaii on Saturday night hit shore smaller than expected roughly three hours after officials ordered evacuations of all coastal areas threatened after a powerful earthquake off the coast of Canada. (AP) ? A Hawaii tsunami warning that spurred coastal evacuations statewide was downgraded to a tsunami advisory early Sunday, ending the threat of serious damage less than three hours after the first waves hit the islands.

Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie said early Sunday that the Aloha State was lucky to avoid more severe surges after a powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Canada.

Abercrombie said beaches and harbors are still closed statewide.

"We're very, very grateful that we can go home tonight counting our blessings," Abercrombie said.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service canceled tsunami advisories for Canada and Oregon, leaving northern California as the only spot in North America still under a tsunami advisory.

The first waves hitting Hawaii on Saturday night were smaller than expected.

Gerard Fryer, a geologist tracking the tsunami for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, said the largest wave in the first 45 minutes of the tsunami was measured in Maui at more than 5 feet, about 2 feet higher than normal sea levels.

No major damage was reported.

At first, officials said Hawaii wasn't in any danger of a tsunami after the 7.7-magnitude earthquake rattled the western coast of North America Saturday night, sparking tsunami warnings for southern Alaska and western Canada.

Later, officials issued a warning for Hawaii as well, saying there had been a change in sea readings. About the same time, a tsunami advisory was issued for a 450-mile stretch of U.S. coast running from north of San Francisco to central Oregon.

A small tsunami created by the quake was barely noticeable in Craig, Alaska, where the first wave or surge was recorded Saturday night.

Fryer said it could take several hours for the danger to pass in Hawaii, especially if the waves get bigger.

"It's beginning to look like the evacuation may not have been necessary," Fryer said.

The National Weather Service said there were reports of water quickly receding in bays, including Hilo Bay on the Big Island.

The warning in Hawaii spurred residents to stock up on essentials at gas stations and grocery stores and sent tourists in beachside hotels to higher floors in their buildings. Bus service into Waikiki was cut off an hour before the first waves, and police in downtown Honolulu shut down a Halloween block party.

Abercrombie proclaimed an emergency, mobilizing extra safety measures.

While television traffic cameras showed onlookers at the beach in Waikiki, Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle warned people to stay away from the surf for several days.

Carlisle ? who recommended people think about ditching their cars if they were in traffic ? said people should be cautious.

"There's no reason to panic but there's every reason to take all of the necessary precautions," he said.

Coast Guard officials closed all harbors in the state to incoming boats and urged vessels to leave and not return until an all-clear is given.

"We don't have any reports of any tsunami impacts at this time, but we caution mariners because the tsunami surges can continue for several hours," Chief Warrant Officer Gene Maestas said.

In Kauai, three schools used as evacuation centers quickly filled to capacity.

As many people along Hawaii's coasts rushed to higher ground, officials downgraded a tsunami warning to an advisory for southern Alaska and British Columbia. They also issued an advisory for areas of northern California and southern Oregon.

In Alaska, the wave or surge was recorded at 4 inches, much smaller than forecast, said Jeremy Zidek, a spokesman for the Alaska Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake hit in the Queen Charlotte Islands area. The quake was felt in Craig and other southeast Alaska communities, but Zidek said there were no immediate reports of damage.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center issued a warning for coastal areas of southeast Alaska, down the western Canadian coast to the tip of Vancouver Island.

Later Saturday evening, the warning for those areas was downgraded to an advisory, while a warning was issued for Hawaii.

In addition, officials issued an advisory for areas from Gualala Point, Calif., about 80 miles northwest of San Francisco, to the Douglas-Lane county line in Oregon, about 10 miles southwest of Florence.

The Del Norte County Sheriff's Department, based in Crescent City, Calif., near the Oregon line, said it hadn't heard of any problems as a result of the tsunami. Crescent City was one of the U.S. towns hit hardest by last year's tsunami from the Japan quake, with boats in the harbor suffering serious damage.

By early Sunday morning, all warnings and advisories for coastal areas of North American had been canceled, except for a stretch of California coast beginning 80 miles north of San Francisco and stretching to the Oregon line, which remained under an advisory.

A tsunami warning means an area is likely to be hit by a wave, while an advisory means there may be strong currents, but that widespread inundation is not expected to occur.

Fryer said it's not surprising that an earthquake so far away could generate dangerous waves in Hawaii.

"There is nothing between Canada and us that would scatter the energy, so once the beam is formed, it just points right at us," Fryer said.

The U.S. Coast Guard in Alaska said it was warning warn everyone with a boat on the water to prepare for a potential tsunami.

The first wave hit Craig about two hours after the earthquake.

"It started off where it might be a 3-foot wave, and it kept getting downgraded," Craig Mayor Dennis Watson said. "And the last time we heard, it was less than 1 foot."

It actually was recorded at 4 inches. Watson said he was downtown on the waterfront, and had his car lights shining on pylons.

"I didn't even see the surge. I watched the pylons. And the tides came in about four or five inches. The surge would leave a wet spot as it would go back out, and we never did see that," he said.

There could be subsequent waves in Craig, but an official with the tsunami warning center didn't think it would amount to much.

The first wave "typically is not the largest but nevertheless we don't expect the maximum wave height to be large," said Bill Knight.

The state Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management activated its emergency operations center and notified officials in southeast Alaska communities.

Lt. Bernard Auth of the Juneau Command Center said the Coast Guard was also working with local authorities to alert people in coastal towns to take precautions.

Lucy Jones, a USGS seismologist, said the earthquake likely would not generate a large tsunami.

"This isn't that big of an earthquake on tsunami scales," she said. "The really big tsunamis are usually up in the high 8s and 9s."

She said the earthquake occurred along a "fairly long" fault - "a plate 200 kilometers long" in a subduction zone, where one plate slips underneath another. Such quakes lift the sea floor and tend to cause tsunamis, she said.

In Craig, officials implement an emergency plan, and took fire trucks, ambulances and heavy equipment to higher ground.

"If nothing else it was a good exercise in determining how well our disaster plan works. I thought it came off quite well, really," he said.

Watson said he did receive calls from townspeople about the tsunami.

"There's supposed to be a big Halloween party downtown. People are calling, 'Did the wave hit yet so we can go to the party?'" he said.

On the sun: Massive solar flare unleashed (+video)

An X-class flare erupted on the sun on Monday, according to scientists. These flares, sometimes interfering with radio signals here on Earth, are likely to continue as the sun approaches the peak of its magnetic activity in 2013.?

The sun unleashed a powerful solar flare late Monday (Oct. 22), releasing waves of radiation into space that have already caused a short radio blackout on Earth.

The flare came from an active region on the left side of the sun that has been numbered AR 1598, which has already been the source of a number of weaker flares. This flare was classified as an X.1-class flare.

The?flare erupted from the sunspot AR 11598?(short for Active Region 11598), and reached peak brightness at 11:22 p.m. EDT (0322 GMT this morning, Oct. 23), according to scientists working on NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a space telescope that constantly monitors the sun with high-definition cameras. It ranked as an X1.8?solar flare, one of the strongest types of solar flares, according to the U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) run by NOAA and the National Weather Service.

The same sunspot produced three strong flares before this one in just the two days since it became visible from Earth's perspective. "This means more flares are probably in the offing, and they will become increasingly Earth-directed as the sunspot turns toward our planet in the days ahead," astronomer Tony Phillips wrote on?Spaceweather.com, a website that tracks skywatching and space weather events.?

Solar flares are caused when magnetic activity ramps up in certain patches, called sunspots, on the surface of our star. Scientists measure the strength of solar flares in terms of energy classes, with X-class flares the most powerful sun storms. Moderate flares rank as class M storms and can supercharge Earth's northern lights displays when aimed at our planet. Class C solar flares are the weakest of the bunch and have little effect on Earth. [Photos: Sunspots on Earth's Closest Star]

Monday's solar flare was captured in photos and video by SDO, and appears as a bright white flash coming off the sun. The flare was a short-lived type of solar eruption called an impulsive flare (as opposed to the other type, called a gradual flare).

"Impulsive flares aren't generally associated with severe space weather, and additionally, this region is still several days away from directly facing Earth from center disk," SWPC officials wrote. "Nonetheless, the potential for continued activity remains, so stay tuned for updates as Region 1598 makes its way across the visible disk."

Solar flares often release bubbles of charged plasma (called coronal mass ejections) into space that, when they impact Earth, can cause geomagnetic storms that disrupt radio communications and power grids and create especially beautiful displays of the?northern and southern lights?(auroras). This flare, however, did not unleash a coronal mass ejection, so it is predicted to cause little disruption on Earth and no special auroras. Its powerful radiation was enough, though, to briefly disrupt radios here last night.

The sun?is getting more and more active lately as it approaches an expected peak of magnetic activity in 2013. This activity naturally waxes and wanes on an 11-year weather pattern. The sun's current cycle is called Solar Cycle 24.

Get The Self Help Tips You Need - ProjectPB ? The ProjectPB Blog

Do you desire to live a better life? Read the following tips as a means to help with your self improvement.

Before you begin working on your personal development, you first need to understand your place in the universe. Realizing that you are but a small part of the bigger picture will potentially open your mind to attaining new insights. Once you have fully accepted this realization, you?ll seek to better yourself by learning and understanding as much as you can about the vast world in which you live.

TIP! Take a step to cure your anxiety by going with a friend to a movie. Movies are wonderful ways to socialize without feeling like you have to carry on a conversation.

Cut out selfishness to become a better person. You can strengthen your inner character by using self-sacrificing behavior, to help better other people?s lives. You will find this experience incredibly rewarding and helping others will open new possibilities for you.

Leaders are powerful, yet not hungry for power. In order to be a good leader, you must be able to put yourself in the shoes of everyone that you lead. A successful leader is one who demonstrates integrity and virtue as an example to others.

Everyone makes mistakes, one of those is poor food choices every now and then. Admit your poor choices, and move on with your life.

TIP! Make sure you have accessible goals, and then work to accomplish them. Knowing what your weak points are and working to strengthen them will help make you the best you can be.

Try new things. You can always open up new possibilities for yourself. You will see, do and explore more things than you ever thought possible. Another benefit of challenging yourself is the ability to maximize your level of accomplishment. Take on a challenge that is unique and personally meaningful, instead of tackling something that someone else has already accomplished.

Avoid shopping as a way to comfort yourself. If you focus your time on something productive rather than shopping, you?ll save money, and your house won?t look like a big mess.

Remaining humble will always benefit you. In the grand scheme of things, we are relatively insignificant. Everyone has a lot to learn from everyone else. Keep this in mind and remember to stay open to new possibilities. Keeping an open mind will allow you to learn from other people.

TIP! A very important part to personal development would be to know what you want from your life. Having a long-term plan gives you something to work for and gives meaning and direction to your life.

If you are trying to manage your depression, eat more foods that are high in complex carbohydrates. A lack of complex carbs can lead to a shortage of serotonin, a significant factor in depression. Eat more fresh fruit, raw vegetables, whole grains, beans, brown rice and nuts to improve your complex carbohydrate intake.

When you find yourself feeling extremely angry, before you say anything, slowly count to the number ten. Breathe deeply and transport yourself to a tranquil place. Focus on remaining calm and think about what you want to say before you speak.

Is it hard for you to meet that special someone? Try the world wide web. These days, forty percent of all relationships start on the Internet. Your special someone could be looking for you right now. Both have their benefits and their downfalls.

TIP! You need to understand the distance between the place you are now, and the place you want to be in the future. This attitude will help you get started on your journey to improve yourself.

You will be healthier and you will go further than you ever thought possible. Being healthy correlates directly to feeling good. Healthy bodies and minds let you think clearly and avoid trips to the doctor. Making choices that lead to a healthy lifestyle should be a part of your daily routine.

Read a passage that inspires you. Religious books are very uplifting to some, while others may prefer inspirational quotes, autobiographies or poetry. Sometimes having a physical representation of comfort can help you better manage your day-to-day life.

Willpower often plays a major role in increasing the good aspects in your life; your wishes for others may also be what befalls you. You should only want the best to happen for others. When you look on the bright side, it is harder for negative emotions and unfortunate events to ruin your mood.

TIP! Begin your personal development program by focusing on the things that are most important to you. You can build upon the trails they blazed and avoid mistakes they made by finding out how they reached fulfillment.

Choose one aspect that you want to improve and put your effort into that. Even if you have more than one area on which you wish to work, focusing on one area at a time will make it easier to succeed. Adopting new habits one at a time will make it easier to maintain them.

Always try do do the best you can at whatever you do. Follow your passions to decide what to excel at. While you cannot be the very best at something, you can aspire to ispire others in your field. Do the best you can at what you do, and bask in the pride it will bring you.

Silence your worries. The habit of worrying is really imagining a situation that hasn?t really happened and will most likely not ever happen. By preparing for a worst case scenario, you can focus your energies on more positive thoughts. That way, you will feel prepared, and you will also be able to go on with your life.

TIP! Identify the biggest obstacle that is preventing you from succeeding. This is very hard for many people to do.

Determine the things that you value so that you can better come up with an excellent self improvement strategy for your needs. It wouldn?t make sense to work on areas in your life that contradict your values. Focus on positive aspects to improve. These aspects should mesh with your values. By spending your time in these specific areas, you can make the changes in the areas that matter and have these changes stick with you.

As you?ve just read, it?s not as frightening to better your life as you may think. Make a better life for yourself, and you?ll be so much happier.

Don?t go nuts and overreact when it?s not necessary. You?ll get stressed out in no time. Dealing with your stress in a healthy, constructive manner will improve your overall mental wellbeing. You?ve probably made mistakes, but you can find ways to fix it, or even live with it. Prioritize your achievements over your failures.

Arts Center of North Texas: Wounded, But Not Dead | Art&Seek

Dreams of a multimillion-dollar performing arts center in Collin County took a severe hit last year when Frisco residents voted to pull out. And last week, the cities involved agreed to give back the land donated for the project. But there are still hopes, however faint, for SOME kind of arts complex there.

KERA Radio story:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Last year, the Plano Symphony Orchestra featured music from Carmina Burana in a sold-out concert. In fact, the symphony has consistently sold out concerts for the past six seasons.

There?s only one problem. Those sellouts are happening in Richardson at the Eisemann Center. When Plano residents want to see their symphony, they?ve got to hop on Central Expressway and head to the Collin County-Dallas County border. And the distance isn?t the only problem.

?The challenge for us and others is the scheduling,? says Debbie Watson, the symphony?s executive director. ?It?s a very popular venue, and really there?s not another venue like that in North Texas north of LBJ.?

The Plano Symphony intended to call the proposed Arts Center of North Texas home. About a dozen Collin County arts groups were also interested in performing there.

But an agreement among the cities of Plano, Allen and Frisco fell apart, leaving the project in a state of flux. And a number of arts organizations without a home.

?These are some of the finest regional arts organizations in the country,? says?Arts Center of North Texas board president Bob Baggett. ?And yet they?re really starving for venues and they have a very difficult time scheduling their programs?

The center was planned for a 120-acre site along State Highway 121 in Allen. The project?s first phase included a 2,000-seat performance hall. A donor gave the land to the organization, and the cities plan to return it.

But just because the plan unraveled doesn?t mean the project can?t be built. Baggett proposes that the Arts Center of North Texas be spun-off into a new non-profit organization. He made the recommendation in a letter to the three member cities and the center?s board. Baggett says the move would allow the center to operate more freely and possibly make it easier to raise money. Plus, he says the land donor would consider redonating the land to the new organization.

But when a project this ambitious falls apart, a question still floats in the air: Was it really a good idea?

?It?s one thing to build up a brick-and-mortar structure, but it costs an absolute fortune to run such a complex,? says? Jim Hart, the director of SMU?s Arts Entrepreneurship program. ?And when you?ve got competing interests in both Dallas and Fort Worth, I question the need.?

Instead, Hart recommends thinking more modestly. Rather than 2,000 seats, maybe 300? That wouldn?t help groups like the Plano Symphony, which is already filling the 1,500-seat Eisemann Center. But theater and dance companies typically draw smaller audiences.

?Instead of creating a major touring house that?s going to be competing with these larger interests that are already established, perhaps they should do something entirely new and offer something that isn?t offered anywhere else and actually draws the Dallas and Fort Worth communities to those performances in that community,? Hart says. ?That seems to me like a much smarter option because you wouldn?t have as much competition and you have the potential to create a niche.?

Baggett says that during this transitional period, those types of questions will be considered by the Arts Center?s board, as well as arts leaders in the region.

?I think if you talk to the performing arts community, you?d see there?s definitely a need,? he says. ?Next question: Is there still a desire to do something on a larger scale that no one city could afford on their own??

Zillow opens up more choice and opportunities to help buyers find the right home.

Once a buyer finds a pre-market home they are interested in, Zillow helps connect them with a local foreclosure specialist who can help take the next steps toward purchasing the home.
And because buying one of these properties is not your typical transaction, we?ve also created the Zillow Foreclosure Center, which offers has a tremendous amount of? information and how-to guides on buying a distressed property or foreclosed home. Plus, the center also offers tips for homeowners and renters who could be faced with foreclosure.

To see the pre-market inventory in your area, select foreclosed and pre-foreclosure when you start your home search, then sign in to get the full details on these properties.

Once Obama country, Colorado now razor-close

MORRISON, Colo. (AP) ? Four years ago, Barack Obama used this state as both a stage for his nominating convention and a place to show how his new brand of politics could unite young voters, women and minorities to create a winning coalition even in places that normally back Republican presidential candidates.

Now Colorado has become an example of how hard it has been for him to maintain that coalition against the headwinds of a sour economy and his own disastrous first debate performance in Denver.

Republicans and Democrats alike agree that Colorado is a toss-up in this election. Like other battleground states, a slight Obama polling edge before October here has been transformed into a deadlock. That's because independent suburban women ? the key demographic in this closely divided state ? are taking a second look at Romney. Some analysts see an enthusiasm gap between Obama's supporters and his rival's. And the president's attacks on Romney's wealth may resonate less here than in blue-collar Midwestern battlegrounds like Ohio.

"He should be doing better and he isn't," said independent pollster Floyd Ciruli, a former chairman of the state Democratic Party. "It's the worst (swing) state of the bunch for him; isn't that amazing? It's the place we thought he could use as a model."

Though the state has only voted for a Democratic presidential candidate once since 1968, Obama won it by 9 percentage points in 2008. The president is now tied in most public polls here, as well as nationally.

The Romney campaign tried to capitalize on that dynamic Tuesday night with a high-profile appearance of Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, joined by musicians Kid Rock and Rodney Atkins at historic Red Rocks Amphitheater.

"We're in the homestretch now and I think the people of Colorado are going to get us all the way there," Romney told an ecstatic crowd of about 10,000.

Obama was due to hold another rally in Denver on Wednesday. His campaign expresses confidence about its chances, saying it always knew 2008 was an anomaly and this contest would look more like the normal election-year photo finishes in a state evenly divided among Republicans, Democrats and independents.

'We have always said this race will be a close election, and we are confident that the president's plan to move our country forward, coupled with the strongest grass-roots organization in history, will lead us to victory on Election Day," Obama campaign spokeswoman Kim Parker said.

To do that, the president needs to win back voters like Robin Abrams, 24, one of the suburban female moderates who voted for Obama in 2008.

"Obama seemed promising ? something new, something fresh," Abrams said Tuesday from a coffee shop in Englewood, a suburb south of Denver.

But this time around, she'd undecided. She's getting out of college in about a year and isn't sure she'll be able to find a job. She likes Obama's stance on social issues, especially women's health and abortion rights. But she's thinking about her pocketbook, too.

"Socially, I think I'm more Democratic. But economically, I'm not sure. And I want to be sure," said Abrams, who added that she turns off her cellphone sometimes because she's so bombarded by political messages.

The two campaigns are fiercely battling for the votes of the roughly 100,000 undecided voters here who are overwhelmingly nonpartisan women who support abortion rights. The Obama campaign has modeled its approach on Michael Bennet's 2010 U.S. Senate race, in which the Democratic political novice defied the Republican Party by hammering his tea party opponent on immigrants' rights and abortion. Bennet won by less than 30,000 votes.

Laura Chapin, a Democratic consultant, argues that approach ultimately will put Obama over the top. "The demographics still favor President Obama," she said. "This is a young, well-educated state with a majority of women and a lot of Latino voters."

But the state's high levels of education and relative affluence mean that some of Obama's class-based attacks on Romney may not resonate as well.

"Have you ever seen jobs shipped overseas to China from here?" Ciruli said. "We've got no labor unions, we've got minimal old-style manufacturing."

And Republicans contend that the Obama campaign's attempt to paint Romney as an extremist melted away after voters watched him in the first debate, which was widely viewed in Colorado. "That narrative came crashing into reality when they saw that guy up on the debate stage in Denver seeming rational and reasonable," said Ryan Call, chairman of the state Republican Party.

Kenneth Bickers, a political scientist at the famously liberal University of Colorado, Boulder, said Obama also is suffering from an enthusiasm gap. He said that despite two Obama campaign visits here, he sees far less enthusiasm than he did four years ago. "If there's an enthusiasm gap on the Boulder campus, where I am, that's the canary in the coal mine," Bickers said, adding that he believes Hispanics, who are 21 percent of the population here, may not turn out at the same clip as they did four years ago.

Democrats scoff at the notion of an enthusiasm gap, while boasting that their field operation is as strong as ever and could be worth a percentage point or two of the vote. In a sign of its strength, Democrats dramatically narrowed Republicans' advantage in voter registration this summer. Republicans say their own ground game is vastly improved since their low point in 2008.

Denver-based GOP operative Katy Atkinson said that in a state as close as Colorado, the ground game may make all the difference.

"The Democrats have spent a lot of money registering new voters, and those can be the toughest to turn out. So they have the tougher job, but they also have a very sophisticated program," Atkinson said. "If anybody can do it, the Obama people can. But that's the whole question in Colorado."
