In Heart Of Amazon, A Natural Lab To Study Diseases

The city of Iquitos, Peru, in the heart of the Amazon rain forest, has become a giant open-air laboratory to study the spread of dengue fever.
Dan Charles for NPR

The city of Iquitos, Peru, in the heart of the Amazon rain forest, has become a giant open-air laboratory to study the spread of dengue fever.

It's summer and mosquitoes are back. We mostly consider these insects merely annoying, but they also can transmit disease, such as West Nile virus. In fact, in parts of Latin America and Asia ? and even, to a lesser extent, in the U.S. ? mosquito-borne diseases are growing more common.

The city of Iquitos, Peru, in the heart of the Amazon rain forest, has become a giant, open-air laboratory to study the spread of one such disease: dengue fever. Scientists are also using this city-size experiment to find out what works best to stop it. The program is sponsored by the U.S. Navy's Medical Research Unit 6.

Families in Iquitos often put buckets in their homes to collect rainwater from leaky roofs. The stagnant water is a haven for mosquito larvae.

Every morning, a dozen young men go door to door down sun-baked streets in Iquitos that are sometimes paved, sometimes just dirt, carrying out a mosquito census. Two by two, they knock on doors. The people who answer the knock don't seem surprised, and almost all of them invite the mosquito hunters inside.

Inside, walls of rough wooden planks divide the space into rooms; clothing is piled on tables. "This is a really good example of ideal resting sites [for mosquitoes]," says Amy Morrison, who leads the medical research unit here in Iquitos. She's also field director for the Mosquito Research Laboratory of the University of California, Davis.

One mosquito hunter pokes around in dark corners with a miniature vacuum cleaner that traps insects in a wire mesh cage. His partner counts water containers in the backyard where mosquitoes could lay their eggs.

And in one corner, the mosquito hunters find their quarry: tiny specks in a bucket of water. To the untrained eye, they just look like bits of dirt. But they're actually mosquito larvae. "I'd probably miss it, too," Morrison admits.

This bucket was in the bathroom, placed to catch water from a roof leak. "That's a very common practice here," says Morrison. But it's also a perfect spot for one particular species of mosquito ? Aedes aegypti ? to lay its eggs. This is also the primary species of mosquito that spreads dengue fever.

"What's fascinating to me about aegypti is it's probably the mosquito that's most closely associated with human beings, and the most adapted to human beings," says Morrison. It's a kind of unwelcome house pet. No other mosquito species is quite so comfortable laying its eggs inside people's homes. It thrives in tropical cities. And more than most mosquitoes, the female of this species has a particular taste for blood.

A Front-Row Seat To The 'Re-Invasion' Of Dengue

Curiously, this mosquito was not always found in Peru. Half a century ago, public health officials unleashed chemical insecticides on Aedes aegypti and actually wiped it out in large parts of Latin America. By the late 1970s, it was gone from all of Peru. As a result, dengue fever disappeared, too.

Information about mosquito counts and all health and medical issues are tracked at the household level using computer software. It's helping researchers see how the dengue virus is migrating through the city.

Information about mosquito counts and all health and medical issues are tracked at the household level using computer software. It's helping researchers see how the dengue virus is migrating through the city.

But it survived elsewhere ? in nearby Venezuela, for instance. Scientists now say the species could not, realistically, be eradicated. Ten years later, inevitably, it found its way back to Peru and other parts of Latin America. The first city in Peru where it resurfaced was Iquitos.

The dengue virus soon followed. Since the U.S. Navy already had a research laboratory in Iquitos, researchers there had a front row seat to watch the "re-invasion" of dengue. It's become one of the world's main centers for studying the virus and the mosquito that spreads it.

Along with the mosquito census, teams of nurses monitor people who live in selected neighborhoods. They go door to door to see who is running a fever. Hundreds of people give blood samples every six months. All this information gets recorded in a computerized map of the city. It's a snapshot ? actually, more like a movie ? of the virus's migration through the city.

Morrison and her co-workers are hoping it will help them understand the spread of mosquito-borne disease anywhere, including in the U.S.

Roger Nasci, who's in charge of research on mosquito-borne diseases at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, says such diseases certainly can erupt in this country.

"Not only could it happen here; it has happened here," he says. "We had yellow fever epidemics in the United States as recently as 100 years ago; we had dengue epidemics as recently as 50 or 60 years ago."

Controlling The Mosquito

Those epidemics have almost been forgotten. They largely ended when people erected effective barriers between themselves and the insects, such as window screens and air conditioning. But West Nile virus was a reminder that mosquito-borne diseases still can be a threat. In just a few years, West Nile spread from New York to California. Persistent cases of dengue now are found in a few areas of the U.S. as well.

A longer version of this story ? Mosquitoes in Iquitos ? will be broadcast on the radio documentary series Soundprint, heard on many public radio stations.

Nasci says others could follow. For instance, there's Chikungunya virus, which has spread from East Africa to South Asia. Recently, a traveler from India brought it to Italy, and mosquitoes there picked it up and started spreading it.

"We have infected travelers coming to the U.S. with both dengue and Chikungunya virus that could hypothetically and very easily set up a similar kind of transmission cycle," Nasci says.

The experience in Iquitos shows how difficult it is to shut down such a transmission cycle once it is well-established. Spraying campaigns that the city carries out do have an impact, but they don't prevent dengue entirely. Morrison admits that the mosquito is a really tough adversary.

Back at the lab, a researcher sorts mosquitoes by species. They were collected as part of the daily mosquito census.

"I always say, we keep discovering things that turn out to be sort of bad news to the overall goal, which is to find more clever, interesting ways to combat the mosquito, or control the mosquito," she says.

But even though the mosquito probably can't be wiped out in Latin America, Morrison is convinced that it can be controlled well enough to prevent really big outbreaks ? such as one that swept through Iquitos earlier this year.

During that outbreak, almost 1,000 feverish patients filled the regional hospital. Dr. Stalin Vilcaromero says temporary cots lined the hospital's stairwells and hallways. And these patients didn't have ordinary dengue, which usually means a week or so of misery but little more ? they had the really dangerous form of the disease: dengue hemorrhagic fever.

This is much more common when a person gets reinfected a second time with another strain of the virus. At least two dozen people died; many more might have, if they had not come to the hospital.

On this evening, only two dengue patients remain in the hospital. One of them, Javier Almindo Garcia, still cannot walk. In his case, the dengue infection set off another illness, a neurological condition called Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Almindo Garcia says he doesn't know where he might have encountered the mosquito that infected him with the virus. "I have no idea. It just suddenly hit me," he says.

Jon Cryer Gives His Take on Charlie Sheen Meltdown (watch ...

Jon Cryer demonstrated the understated humor that?s made him a star on David Letterman last night (June 8), when he deftly handled questions about the implosion of his colleague Charlie Sheen from hit show ?Two and a Half Men.?

?It?s been mostly fun,? he said without cracking a smile. Maybe for him.

But Sheen has gone through a rocky ride since he had a cocaine and alcohol fueled meltdown at the Plaza Hotel with a naked hooker locked in the bathroom in fear for her life.

Since then, Sheen has gone on a wild crusade against his bosses at the hit show, who fired him, after he slurred the show?s co-creator Chuck Lorre. His subsequent one man Torpedo of Truth tour has had mixed reviews.

Cryer said even he was surprised by the meltdown.

?It?s as much a mystery to me as to everyone, I think,? he said.

?My favorite moment was I got a text from someone, saying, ?Charlie Sheen just called Thomas Jefferson a p*ssy.? I said, ?I think things are getting out of hand.?

As for Cryer, he said he?s taken the whole episode in stride, even though the show for a time appeared like it might be canceled.

?I love him, he?s a great friend,? Cryer said.

?All of us, none of us wanted to continue with the show if we felt like it was hurting him, and there was a point at which, we felt like, there?s no control over him.?

Producers, however, have hired Ashton Kutcher to take over Sheen?s role and the show will go on.

?We had a very quick meeting to see if we could deal with each other, and we could,? Cryor said of his new work mate.

?They threw everything together very quickly, and they had to fly us to New York so they could parade us before in front of advertisers. And they put us in the CBS corporate jet, which was very snazzy.?

Michigan Humane Society board members resign - themorningsun.com

DETROIT (AP) ? The Michigan Humane Society is defending its policy on euthanizing dogs and cats that are too sick or have unstable temperaments keeping them from being placed for adoption after two board members resigned over the agency's animal killing rate.

Cheryl Phillips and Lee Lien left the board Monday during an annual meeting, Humane Society spokesman Michael Robbins told The Associated Press Wednesday.

Phillips told the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News that they resigned after the board recently decided against having an external audit of shelter practices. Phillips wanted the audit after learning the agency killed about 70 percent of cats and dogs that it took in last year.

Robbins said the Humane Society has had third-party reviews in the past.

"Their belief is that every animal can be saved," he said of the two former board members.

Of the 29,200 animals dropped off last year at the agency's three Detroit area shelters, about 25,300 were evaluated for health and temperament, said Robbins, who added that about 60 percent of those were found to be unadoptable and were eventually euthanized.

Writing Our Own Speeches ? Learn the Art of Public Speaking

June 10, 2011

Coming into this class I knew we would have to write speeches, with our own ideas, thoughts and beliefs. I never imagined that I would get to know my fellow classmates as intimately as I have. It amazes me how words just come so easily to some people, how they can just draw you in and make you feel like you are actually experiencing the situation. It is so inspiring to hear of the hardships some of my classmates have over come, and how they are bettering themselves instead of dwelling on the past and feeling sorry for themselves. Just thinking of their experiences gives me the strength to move past my own issues and to look at things from a stand point of ?it could be worse?. It is just absolutely amazing to me. I would like to thank every one who shared a personal triumph, and I want to thank you for giving me hope that no matter what, no matter how difficult a situation may be it will get better at some point.

Article Marketing and SEO in 2011 | ArticleGym.com

With the recent Google changes (and the fact that there will be plenty more changes to come) many people were left asking ?is article marketing dead?? No, I don?t think it?s dead but the way article marketing is done has certainly gone through a change. Gone are the days where you can write or have someone else write a bunch of low quality articles and have the published on the more popular, highly trafficked sites. It?s not going to happen. It?s not just Google either. Other search engines and social networks will change too.

If you?re the kind of person who just wrote articles and submitted it to as many directories, blogs and press release sites you could find you could still achieve the same results. If you apply that to a broader SEO strategy then you could boost your search engine rankings just by having a variety of different links. If you?re writing with the intention of driving traffic to your site or blog then you?ll have to start tweaking your efforts. Personally I feel you should be doing both.

I started article marketing a few years ago and it has always served a purpose for me. I have had some great success with it. Over time I learned that as a core strategy it became less and less effective but still served a purpose as a supplemental strategy. In reality, I was just finding out that this was the way internet marketing in general was for everyone. It was a strategy that was full of both rewards and frustrations, just like anything else in life.

The thing that you have to do is find your own strategy to implement using the standard article marketing strategy. What I mean is something that works in the cyber marketing world we live in nowadays. Submitting article after article using low competition keywords and attempting to dominate Google for all these search terms is going to be a waste of time and effort. A lot of directories simply aren?t going to bother approving low quality or spun content.

You?ll also have to learn how to tweak your strategy since there is no doubt Google will be making more changes in the future. Search engines and social networking sites are going to continue to develop and evolve and if you don?t develop and evolve with them then you?re going to find yourself with any empty bank account and nest egg.

Affiliate marketers, product creators and SEO specialists work hard for the money they make. The harder they work and the more they want it the more likely they are to get it. Time is money and wasting your time on outdated strategies is something you just can?t afford to do anymore. Concentrate on what works and change with the times. Adapting will make you far more productive and increased productivity will just make you more money. It?s the only way to make it.

Article Marketing isn?t dead and Article Marketing Robot is proof of that. Read the full review at the Article Marketing Robot review site.

HP, Non-Profit Partner on Malaria Surveillance | Science Business

By Alan, on June 6th, 2011

Palm Pre 2 used for heatlh care data (HP)

(HP)

Computer maker HP and non-profit organization Positive Innovation for the Next Generation (PING) are collaborating to improve the quality and efficiency of disease surveillance in Botswana. The project involves mobile health monitoring technology that HP and PING believe can help better protect populations against major malaria outbreaks.

The initiative uses HP?s webOS operating system for smartphones and cloud computing technology to enable health workers to more efficiently report on malaria cases and minimize the harm caused by outbreaks. The program equips health care workers in Botswana with HP Palm Pre 2 smartphones (pictured right) to collect malaria data, notify the Ministry of Health about outbreaks, and tag both data and disease surveillance information with GPS coordinates.

These data are expected to help prepare the first-ever geographic map of disease transmission in the country, enabling faster response times and better measurement of malaria cases to monitor treatment, and scale up the distribution of mosquito nets. The Clinton Health Access Initiative and Botswana mobile network provider MASCOM are also partners in the project.

The malaria monitoring program is in a year-long pilot phase. Health care workers collect data via a webOS application on Pre 2 smartphones, upload the data over a mobile network, and analyze and share the data via the cloud. Through this system, says HP, analysis now takes hours rather than weeks to complete.

When health care workers detect an outbreak, they can upload specific case and location information from their mobile devices in the field. Health officers in the area and members of the Ministry of Health then receive a text message alerting them of the outbreak, which allows them to more quickly deploy preventative measures to reduce disease transmission.

A surveillance application on the webOS platform enables health workers to perform real-time surveys from the field. They can enter data using images, video, audio, as well as GPS coordinates, and qualitative and quantitative information about the case.

My sister did a great job of keeping track of everything?and was a good sport for letting me dress her up in ribbons Smile? She?s going to be a wonderful Auntie.

Baby girl received a ton of presents.? Everyone brought a book for her collection and wrote notes in them, which makes them each so special.

The most creative gift of the day was from Jeromy?s cousins and aunt?they took a clothesline and hung all different clothes on it for the baby!

It started and kept going!

Such a fantastic idea, I am stealing it!

By the end of the day, I was feeling spoiled and very much surrounded by love.? I thank my lucky stars each and every day for my family and friends.?

As soon as we got home I insisted that Jeromy try on the Ergo baby carrier, with a fake baby, of course.

Bob Dylan's Shangri-La For Sale!

Bob Dylan House For Sale

The term Shangri-La is synonymous with the idea of paradise. Secluded from the outside world.

Now that you know what it means, Bob Dylan's Margo-Albert-defined-as-Shangri-La home is up for sale!

We'll let you be the judge of whether or not it's worthy of the title from the pics, but here's a little bit about it:

The historical Shangri-La recording studio and personal residence to Bob Dylan has been listed for $4.1 million. The home was named 'Shangri-La Ranch' by actress Margo Albert after she starred in the film adaptation of James Hilton's 1933 classic, "Lost Horizon." According to the property's website, Rob Fraboni designed and built the studio additions during the 1970's- under the watch of Bob Dylan and The Band. Levon Helm (drummer for The Band) described the home as, "?a clubhouse and studio where we and our friends could record albums and cross-pollinate one another's music."

The four bedroom-three bathroom house, along with the recording studios were featured in Martin Scorsese's 1978 documentary, "The Last Waltz." Beej Chaney (singer/guitar player for The Suburbs) thoughtfully renovated the recording studios and updated the home before listing it on the market. This is the first opportunity to purchase the home in over thirty years.

So there you go! Bust out them check books and get to bidding! $4.1 mil is nothing!

Wait, you should probably check out the pics before you decide! So go ahead and do that, LOLz!

If U get it, invite us over for a house-warming party!

You've come a long, long way, Angelina Jolie!

The Oscar-winning actress, humanitarian, mother of six and the white-hot object of Brad Pitt's affection celebrates her 36th birthday on Saturday. (No word yet on where and how Jolie is celebrating with Pitt, 47, and their children Maddox, 9, Pax, 7, and Zahara, 6, Shiloh, 5, and?two-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.)

PHOTOS: Angelina's looks over the years

Back in 1998, the daughter of Oscar-winning Hollywood vet Jon Voight and the late model-actress Marcheline Bertrand was an unknown former teen model who got Hollywood's attention baring her breasts and fierce acting chops in the HBO biopic Gia.

Promoting that flick, Jolie sported a pixie cut -- and a demure pin-stripe outfit! As the years went on and her star rose, Jolie (whose first two marriages to Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton ended in divorce) evolved from an intense, freaky Goth goddess to sexy action heroine to ethereal, super-glam mother. (She's even gone blonde!)

Restaurant Review: Hell's Kitchen ... - Kel's Cafe of All Things Food

I was recently in Minneapolis for a couple of days on business. On?the way to my hotel, I noticed I was in walking distance to Hell?s Kitchen (80 South 9th St., Minneapolis, Minn. ?55402). I had seen some good reviews on the Internet about this place, which is in no way connected to the telvision show of the same name. I asked the hotel clerk if she would recommend Hell?s Kitchen, and she said absolutely. It?was almost 2:30 p.m.?and I hadn?t eaten lunch, so I decided to give it a try. And I?m so?glad I did.

To get to the restaurant, you walk down a stairwell that?s painted bright red and black. It?s a quirky place, with pictures of demons on the wall and a big, round bar at the front, right where you first come in. The place is big but cozy. Some of the walls are brick (or fake brick ? not sure). Overall the atmosophere is very casual and laid back. The service was good, from the host to my server -?nice and?friendly.

My?late afternoon meeting had a good chance of being rescheduled to the next day (which it was) and, since I had the pleasure of sitting directly?in front of a 3-year old with long legs and strong lungs?for the duration of my flight, I decided to order a mimosa ($8.50)?to start things off. It was delicious ? not sure of?what champagne was used, but the orange juice was freshly squeezed and the bartender gave me a good pour. It was garnished with a huge, sweet strawberry, and hit the spot.

I decided to try the Roasted Vegetable sandwich ($12.75), which came with a choice fries, sweet potato fries ($1.00 more), fruit or coleslaw. It was excellent, and would have certainly made my ?Mushroom Madness? post a couple of months back as one of my favorites.

This sandwich was served on ciabatta bread and had slices of portabella mushrooms that had been marinated in balsamic vinegar. It has strips of carrots, red and yellow peppers, and creamy goat cheese as a spread. It had a great marriage of flavors, with the with the crustiness of the bread, the?earthiness of the bellas, the crunch of the carrots and peppers, and the distinctive flavors of balsamic and goat cheese. I am going to try and replicate this one soon!

Hell?s Kitchen?is open for breakfast?(served in some form all day), lunch, dinner and late night meals?as well as for?weekend brunch. According to my hotel clerk and?server, it has a great live music scene, especially later in the week, and its breakfast choices are great and topnotch. I?will definitely come back on any future trip to Minneapolis.
