U.S. ends "constructive" talks with North Korea (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The United States ended "constructive" talks with North Korea on Friday and will consult with Seoul and other allies on whether to reopen stalled negotiations on Pyongyang's nuclear program, the U.S. special envoy for North Korea said.

U.S. envoy Stephen Bosworth held two days of talks with veteran North Korean nuclear negotiator Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye-gwan at the U.S. mission to the United Nations in New York, their first such interaction since 2009.

It was not immediately clear what, if any, agreements were reached during the U.S.-North Korean discussions.

Bosworth told reporters outside the mission that the talks were "constructive," the same word that Kim used earlier to describe the meetings when he left the building.

Bosworth made clear it was too early to say what decisions Washington might take on resuming six-nation nuclear negotiations, which have been suspended for years.

"As we have said from the beginning of these discussions, they are designed to explore the willingness of North Korea to take concrete and irreversible steps toward denuclearization," he said. "In that regard, these were constructive and businesslike discussions."

"We reiterated that the path is open to North Korea toward the resumption of talks, improved relations with the United States, and greater regional stability," he said.

But that would only be possible "if North Korea demonstrates through its actions that it supports the resumption of the six-party process as a committed and constructive partner," Bosworth said.

The stalled six-party disarmament-for-aid talks include both Koreas, the United States, Japan, Russia and China.

"Before deciding on next steps to resume the process, the United States will consult closely with the Republic of Korea and our other partners in the six-party talks," he said.

Speaking earlier to reporters in Korean, Kim described the talks as "very constructive and businesslike."

SOUTH KOREA DOWNBEAT ON SIX-PARTY TALKS

U.S. officials have emphasized they are in no rush to restart the six-party talks, which collapsed in 2009 when North Korea quit the process after new U.N. sanctions were imposed following a nuclear test by Pyongyang. North Korea also tested an atomic device in 2006.

Seoul has made clear it does not have high hopes for the six-party process at the moment.

"We are not optimistic for six-party talks as it was, and as it is," South Korea's nuclear envoy, Wi Sung-lac, told a small group of foreign correspondents in Seoul.

Washington and its allies Seoul and Tokyo have been pressing North Korea to take real steps to demonstrate its sincerity ahead of any new negotiations, saying they were not interested in simply holding talks for talks' sake.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Robert King, the Obama administration's special envoy for human rights, joined the talks on Friday, but could give no further details on what was discussed.

China, Pyongyang's chief international backer, has been urging a resumption of the broader negotiations.

In 2005, the six parties signed a document spelling out a process in which North Korea would scrap its nuclear programs in exchange for economic and energy aid and diplomatic relations with the United States and Japan.

North Korea has called for a peace treaty to replace the truce that ended the 1950-1953 Korean War.

The current talks follow signs that tensions between North Korea and South Korea are easing since two attacks last year blamed on the North that killed 50 South Koreans.

South Korea has softened its demand for an apology from North Korea over the attacks as the precondition for resuming dialogue.

Foreign ministers from the two sides met on the sidelines of an Asian security conference in Indonesia on Saturday for the first time since 2008.

The United States and China have agreed on a three-stage process to resume the six-party talks. The first stage is the two Koreas engaging bilaterally, the second involves talks between the North and the United States, and the third stage is the six-party talks.

Shocker! British civil servants spend a lot on new PCs

The British government just got put on Supernanny's naughty step for paying too high a price for new PCs. A parliamentary scrutiny committee accused civil servants of being naively ripped off by a "cartel" of big IT firms, who steal charge as much as £3,500 ($5,700) per file-donkey -- that's around ten times the open market rate for a basic machine. However, at risk of pooping on the UK's moral outrage party, an equally moral sense of fairness compels us to play devil's advocate here. After all, the figure of £3,500 covers "infrastructure" and "applications" as well as the plain old computer, and those categories might include a whole array of expensive add-ons, like tailored software, servers, high-speed internet, and even technical support. Of course, we could be wrong about this, in which case Jo Frost can punish us however she sees fit.

Google Hotel Finder Lets You Draw Map Areas and Filter Hotel Lists to Find the Perfect Place to Stay [Hotels]

Google Hotel Finder Lets You Draw Map Areas and Filter Hotel Lists to Find the Perfect Place to StayThere are several sites designed to help you find the perfect hotel. The Hotel Finder experiment from Google leverages some of the search giant's strengths, with a map-based and search filtering approach to finding a hotel.

To narrow down where you want to stay, you can draw shapes on the Google map, defining one or more neighborhoods. The resulting hotels list can be sorted by hotel class, user rating, price?and, very interestingly, price for your travel dates compared to the typical price over the last year (so you can see if it's more expensive to stay at that hotel now that it normally is). You can also add hotels to a shortlist for easy comparison later.

It's still an experiment and only in the US right now, but promising nonetheless.

Dove Marsa Ladies Squash Open - Sport In Malta

Wednesday, July 27, 2011, 8:00

The Dove Marsa Ladies Squash Open was held last weekend at the Marsa Sports Club. With the temperature rising outside, the players were able to enjoy and appreciate the fully air-conditioned courts at Marsa. The tournament was held in 4 groups, with the winners of each group progressing to the ?A? event and the remaining players participating in the ?B? event. This format gave new players the chance to play against more experienced players.

The first ?B? event semi-final was between Maria Duffy (Marsa S.C.) and 15 year old Samira Caruana (Luxembourg). Samira started well but never really troubled Maria with Maria winning comfortably 3-0. The second semi-final was between Elaine Catania and Maryanne Caruana (both Marsa S.C.). The two friends play together on a regular basis and all the games were very close, but Maryanne eventually took the match 3-1. In the ?B? event final, Maryanne started each game well and was able to maintain her lead throughout with Maria always chasing. Maryanne won the match 3-0 and with it the Dove Marsa ladies ?B? event title.

The ?A? event semi-finals produced 2 completely different games. The first semi-final between ex-national team player Roberta Pace Grima and 12 year old Kim Cauchi (both Marsa S.C.) was a demonstration of how to control a game of squash. Roberta showed young Kim how to place the ball and move your opponent around the court and was always in control of the match. Kim put in her usually gutsy performance but was unable to match Roberta?s experience and precision with Roberta winning comfortably 3-0.

The second semi-final produced the match of the tournament ? 10 year old Alina Bushma from the Ukraine against Analise Attard (Marsa S.C.). Alina personifies youthful exuberance and it was a joy to watch her enthusiasm on court. Analise won the first game 11-9 with Alina taking the second 11-8. The two were fighting for every point and some of the retrieving was exemplary. Analise took the third game 11-2 and a 2-1 lead with everyone thinking Alina was showing signs of tiring ? she is, after all, only 10 years old! The fourth set was even throughout with both players using all corners and a wide variety of shots. A lucky break at 9-9 gave Alina ?game ball? followed by an unforced error from Analise gifting the set 11-9 to Alina. The fifth and final set continued in the same manner as the fourth with neither player unable to break away. In the end Alina managed to find 2 winning shots and took the game 13-11 and the match 3-2.?

The ?A? final understandably was a rather one-sided match with Roberta once again controlling the game and Alina looking rather jaded. Roberta was occasionally surprised at the amount of effort and will-power Alina was still showing, but managed to take the match 3-0 and so win her first Dove Marsa ladies squash title.

After the final, Maria Duffy, representing the Marsa Squash Section, presented all the participants with a Dove gift pack and the two winners with a Dove hamper. The evening was rounded off with the usual after tournament social event where the ladies were able to enjoy a small buffet and a well-deserved drink served at the Marsa pool bar. Thanks go to Dove for their generous support and also to Analise Attard and Maria Duffy for all the hard work that went into the organisation and preparation.

The next open squash event at Marsa will be the Dove Squash Challenge in September.

Family say farewell to "angel" Winehouse (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? The family of Amy Winehouse gathered at a north London cemetery on Tuesday to bid farewell to their "angel," three days after the troubled singer was found dead at her home.

Some 100 mourners, including Winehouse's producer Mark Ronson and Kelly Osbourne, attended the traditional Jewish funeral that closed with her father Mitch saying: "Good night my angel, sleep tight; Mummy and Daddy love you ever so much."

A family spokesman said Carole King's "So Far Away" was played at the end of the service. King's "You've Got a Friend" was the first song Amy and her father had sung together.

In a eulogy at the private service, Mitch Winehouse said his 27-year-old daughter had been happier in recent months than she had been for years, and was looking forward to a future with her boyfriend of the past two years, film director Reg Traviss, 35.

Earlier, Traviss had denied rumors the singer died in a drug-fueled haze.

"She had been full of life and so upbeat recently, exercising every day and doing yoga," he told the Sun newspaper. "This terrible thing that happened is like an accident."

After the service, Winehouse was cremated at Golders Green Crematorium where her grandmother Cynthia, a singer who dated jazz legend Ronnie Scott, was also cremated, the spokesman said.

An inquest opened on Monday and was adjourned until October, with police describing the death as unexplained and an autopsy failing to determine the cause of death. More medical tests are being carried out, with the results expected next month.

Tributes to the "Back to Black" singer continued to pour in. Her talent was eclipsed over recent years by her battles with drugs and alcohol, and her last stage appearances had been derided as shambolic.

Singer Adele wrote on her website: "i don't think she ever realised just how brilliant she was and how important she is, but that just makes her even more charming.

"although im incredibly sad about Amy passing im also reminded of how immensely proud of her i am as well. and grateful to be inspired by her. Amy flies in paradise xx"

Winehouse was the most soulful vocalist Britain had ever seen, singer George Michael wrote on Twitter.

In an echo of the aftermath of Michael Jackson's death two years ago, sales of her records have boomed.

Record industry body the Official Charts Company said on Tuesday that her music was expected to dominate the British charts by the end of the week.

She is on course to have seven singles in the Top 40 and 14 in the Top 200, with the biggest selling track currently Back To Black followed by "Rehab," "Tears Dry On Their Own," "You Know I'm No Good" and "Valerie."

In the year following his death, Jackson sold more records in Britain than any other artist.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported this week that material recorded before Winehouse's death could be released as a posthumous album.

They cited sources who said Winehouse had recorded "a lot of material" and that her parents would have the final say on whether a new album was to be released.

Winehouse's spokesman told Reuters there was no news about the release of a third album. "I know there's material about, but no one's talked about it," he said.

They provide the excuse of ?that?s just sales? or ?hey it is feast or famine?. As a substitute of approaching the company like each other agent and struggling to consider 1-2 listings month-to-month I invite you to contemplate a different method.

Before diving in to generating calls, sending letters, door knocking, or even placing up a new site, take into account what your overall actual estate marketing and advertising strategy. To aid you start off in the right path take into account asking oneself the following inquiries.

1. What is my advertising character?

4. What am I willing to pay out to get a single listing? (contemplate having a rule this kind of as 7% of your gross commission)
5. How can I make it simple to track my benefits?
6. How lengthy will I stick with a advertising system before I make a change or minimize it fully?
7. How can I produce methods that will have automated stick to up to compliment my lively marketing and advertising?

Prior to launching any marketing and advertising exactly where you want to consider much more listings think about answering the over concerns. Once you have the solutions to these concerns then you can put a advertising method into action. To get a serious quantity of listings (30 or far more a month) will demand a minimal of 4 systems operating for you all of the time. Most real estate experts operate a single, referrals, which will tram them in survival mode.

Despite the fact that every method can be distinct relying on your persona, contemplate a minimum of the following principles as you produce your method.

one. Consistency ? What can you have carried out daily (or do oneself) that will run your marketing? Can you send out postcards every day? Can you ship out email messages to prospective customers everyday? Can you create an article? To carry in consistent prospects needs constant motion. Have a technique that makes it possible for you to put marketing into action every single day of the week.

Uterine Cancer ? The Silent Killer

Malignancy of the lining of the uterus, or endometrial cancer, is the third most prevalent cause of deaths by cancer in women in the United States. It doesn?t have to be. Every year, in excess of 35,000 women in the United States are diagnosed. Other forms of uterine cancer include carcinoma of the cervix, trophoblastic disease arising from placental stem cells and sarcoma of the myometriom (uterine muscle).

Most carcinomas of the lining of the womb have their origin in a thin layer of cells that line the inner surface of the uterus called epithelial cells. There are two types: Type I, which is found in women before or approaching menopause. These tend not to invade other tissue layers and their prognosis is good. Type II are mainly found in women of African-American origin who have been through the menopause. These are more serious. A less common type of cancer, endometrial sarcoma, originates from the connective tissue.

Symptoms ? Vaginal bleeding is usually the first and most common symptom. Before the age of menopause, this can mean heavier or lengthier periods than normal or perhaps in between normal menses. In women beyond the age of menopause, any bleeding at all is a suggestion that there is a problem and should never be ignored. Pain or cramping in the lower abdomen, pain during sex or pain or difficulty in emptying the bladder should also be reported. For women who typically have irregular or heavy periods, it may be difficult to identify an unusual pattern.

Diagnosis ? The doctor will perform an internal examination and may take blood samples to be sent off for testing. He may perform or request a vaginal ultrasound examination. This involves the insertion of a gentle probe, about the size of a tampon, and monitoring on a screen. It may be necessary to take a biopsy, either in the doctor?s office or in a hospital.

Treatment ? For cancers of the cervix, a cone biopsy may be performed or the problem may be treated with radiation. For other cancers of the uterus, a total hysterectomy and removal of both ovaries may be necessary.

Causes and Risk Factors ? There is no known cause but there are certain recognized risk factors, some of which are beyond the control of an individual. These are high estrogen levels, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), difficulty conceiving or no history of pregnancy, early onset of menstruation or late cessation of periods (menopause). Other risk factors are cancers of the breast or ovaries, use of Tamoxifen (a cancer drug), pelvic radiation, being over the age of 35, diabetes or a history of anovulatory menstrual cycles.

Prevention ? Some risk factors can be controlled, such as a diet that is high in animal fat, obesity, heavy daily alcohol consumption or hypertension (high blood pressure).

Heavy menstrual periods, pain and bleeding after menopause are not normal and not something that women have to put up with. Symptoms should never be ignored. There are a lot of innocent and easily treatable conditions that share these symptoms but it is impossible to tell without the necessary diagnostic procedures. Never make the assumption that there is no thing seriously wrong.

UBS profits plunge 49% (AFP)

ZURICH (AFP) ? Swiss banking giant UBS said Tuesday that its second quarter profits plunged 49 percent compared to a year ago as a strong Swiss franc bit into earnings and revenues slumped on economic uncertainty.

Profits reached 1.015 billion francs (874.8 million euros, $1.266 billion) for the three months ending June compared to 2.005 billion francs a year ago, and the bank warned that it would probably miss its mid-term target.

The Zurich-based bank added that it would slash 1.5 to 2.0 billion francs in costs over the next two to three years, a move which would force it to book "significant restructuring charges later this year."

"Banks? returns have declined overall in the last 12 months, reflecting deleveraging and the actions being taken in advance of increased capital requirements," said Oswald Gruebel, UBS chief executive.

"We are responding to this changed environment and the weakening economic outlook by adapting our business and increasing efficiency.

"While our target for pre-tax profit set in 2009 is unlikely to be achieved in the original timeframe, our strong competitive positioning and our capital strength give us confidence for the future," added Gruebel.

UBS had previously set a target to book pre-tax profits of 15 billion francs in the mid-term.

Net new money for the second quarter was positive, reaching 8.7 billion francs, but just a fraction of the 22.3 billion francs recorded in the first quarter, said the bank.

Its wealth management division recorded inflows for the Asia Pacific region and the European onshore business, but the European cross-border business posted outflows amid tighter scrutiny from tax authorities.

The investment bank division meanwhile posted sharp falls in pre-tax profit to 376 million francs from 1.314 billion a year ago, as revenues slumped across the board.

A levy imposed by Britain on bank liabilities that takes effect at the end of the second quarter is expected to shave about 100 million francs off the investment bank unit's pre-tax earnings in the coming quarters.

"Current economic uncertainty shows little sign of abating," said the bank.

"We therefore do not envisage material improvements in market conditions in the third quarter of 2011, particularly given the seasonal decline in activity levels traditionally associated with the summer holiday season, and expect these conditions to continue to constrain our results," it warned.

Restaurant Review: Marliave ? CBS Boston

Marliave Main Floor Bar and Dining Area. (Photo Credit: www.Marliave.com)

BOSTON (CBS) ? One hundred and twenty-six years ago, French immigrant Henry Marliave decided to start a restaurant on Bosworth Street in downtown Boston. You?ll find it hidden away down a back alley, with a battered, old-fashioned wooden sign hanging near the doorway. The minute you walk inside you realize how the building has managed to survive through parts of three centuries.

The main level?s vintage tin ceilings and old-school tile floor remain in place. Little more than a fresh coat of paint covers up the tales of late night press clubs, a rumored brothel, and a Prohibition-era speakeasy that boasted a number of documented liquor seizures.

A few years ago, Grotto chef Scott Herrit bought Marliave, tweaked the atmosphere and transformed the menu before reopening. On the drink menu, names reflect the restaurant?s roots, with cocktails called The Molasses Flood of 1909, Warren G. Harding, and Yellow Journalism. The $3.50 Miller High Life may appear a bit out of place next to a $9 Delirium Tremens, but it seems to set the standard that there?s something for everyone?s taste.

Sticking with the ?something for everyone? theme, Marliave?s menu choices bounce from burgers to beef wellington, and Reubens to rabbit. Marliave bakes its bread and burger buns fresh in house and uses local ingredients whenever possible. The Reubens ($14) and Pizzas ($13) reflect the pride Herrit puts into his food. The hamburger is a gem. The restaurant purchases the hamburger meat from a sustainable farm about two hours north of Boston. The mouthwatering taste of fresh beef on your taste buds makes the $12 price tag extremely easy to swallow. Did I mention it comes with a side of succulent house-cut French fries drizzled with truffle oil (a side of baked beans or salad are the other two options)? For the adventurous, a prosciutto-wrapped rabbit tenderloin with roasted sausage, Gorgonzola and caramelized onion polenta, while pricier ($25), is well worth the risk of giving this dish a try. The payoff is exquisite.

That same ?something for everyone? theme is echoed in the three-floor layout, with a more upscale upstairs, an oyster bar on the lower level, and a small outdoor porch. The $1 oysters during happy hour offer another intriguing reason to visit.

I have run into the occasional gripe about service. Based on my experiences and others, I?d say it?s far more ?hit? than ?miss?. The most common complaint I have come across is cost. But, unless you?re willing to pay more or settle for less, there are very few places I?ve come across where the trifecta of food, atmosphere, and price rival Marliave.

Money shortage delays federal protection of gopher tortoise (Reuters)

ATLANTA (Reuters) ? The gopher tortoise deserves protection in several states in the U.S. Southeast under the Endangered Species Act, but funding shortages could delay the listing for years, federal wildlife officials said on Tuesday.

There is sufficient scientific data to list the gopher tortoise as threatened in parts of Alabama, Georgia, Florida and South Carolina, said Cindy Dohner, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's regional director for the Southeast.

"But we do not have the resources to pursue the listing process at this time," she told reporters during a conference call, noting the process can cost $300,000 or more.

The gopher tortoise, which is sandy brown in color and can grow to up to 15 pounds, will instead join a list of 251 other species designated as candidates for federal protection.

"There will be no land use changes for anyone as the result of this announcement," Dohner said. "The finding does not affect private or public landowners with new regulations."

It could be up to five years before the agency conducts studies and develops rules to give the tortoise federal protection in the Southeast, which could restrict how property owners use their land, officials said.

In the meantime, federal officials plan to work with private landowners on voluntary conservation efforts that could be partially funded by federal grants.

The gopher tortoise is already listed as threatened in parts of Louisiana, Mississippi and western Alabama. The tortoise is threatened by habitat loss, herbicides used in forestry and other factors, federal officials said.

The tortoise lives in long-leaf pine forests and digs burrows up to 23 feet deep, which provide refuge for up to 360 other species, including indigo snakes, skunks and rabbits.

Wildlife officials could not provide specific estimates on Tuesday of the number of gopher tortoises in the southeastern United States, nor would they specify what land use restrictions might be imposed once the tortoise is protected.

Academic and Creative Writing Journal Vikram Karve: MY FAVOURITE ...

Academic and Creative Writing Journal Vikram Karve: MY FAVOURITE SHORT STORIES Part 9 ? LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER

MY FAVOURITE SHORT STORIES Part 9 ? LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER

MY FAVOURITE SHORT STORIESPart 9 ? LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTERAt the end of World War II, a number of military men, from the army, navy and air force, who were demobilised and released from active military service, turned to creative writing and many achieved great success and fame as writers and novelists ? Alistair MacLean, Nicholas Monsarrat, Herman Wouk, James A. Michener, Frederick Forsyth, to name a few, and, not to forget, Roald Dahl, the master storyteller, who not only wrote a large number of inimitable short stories but achieved success as a children?s writer too, especially with his classic book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.Roald Dahl was best at suspense, mystery and horror. I love many of his stories, but the one I like the most is his classic story LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER. This is a perfect suspense story told in simple linear style slowly building up the suspense which climaxes with a brilliant ending. I don?t want to spoil your fun by telling you about the plot, so just go ahead and enjoy LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER. This story is freely available on the internet (just google it or try any search engine or literary site). I am giving a link to the story and, for your convenience, I? also pasting the story below (from the url link mentioned):The room was warm and clean, the curtains drawn, the two table lamps alight-hers and the one by the empty chair opposite. On the sideboard behind her, two tall glasses, soda water, whiskey.? Fresh ice cubes in the Thermos bucket.Mary Maloney was waiting for her husband to come him from work. Now and again she would glance up at the clock, but without anxiety, merely to please herself with the thought that each minute gone by made it nearer the time when he would come.? There was a slow smiling air about her, and about everything she did.? The drop of a head as she bent over her sewing was curiously tranquil.? Her skin -for this was her sixth month with child-had acquired a wonderful translucent quality, the mouth was soft, and the eyes, with their new placid look, seemed larger darker than before. When the clock said ten minutes to five, she began to listen, and a few moments later, punctually as always, she heard the tires on the gravel outside, and the car door slamming, the footsteps passing the window, the key turning in the lock.? She laid aside her sewing, stood up, and went forward to kiss him as he came in.?Hullo darling,? she said.?Hullo darling,? he answered. She took his coat and hung it in the closer.? Then she walked over and made the drinks, a strongish one for him, a weak one for herself; and soon she was back again in her chair with the sewing, and he in the other, opposite, holding the tall glass with both hands, rocking it so the ice cubes tinkled against the side. For her, this was always a blissful time of day.? She knew he didn?t want to speak much until the first drink was finished, and she, on her side, was content to sit quietly, enjoying his company after the long hours alone in the house.? She loved to luxuriate in the presence of this man, and to feel-almost as a sunbather feels the sun-that warm male glow that came out of him to her when they were alone together.? She loved him for the way he sat loosely in a chair, for the way he came in a door, or moved slowly across the room with long strides.? She loved intent, far look in his eyes when they rested in her, the funny shape of the mouth, and especially the way he remained silent about his tiredness, sitting still with himself until the whiskey had taken some of it away.?Yes,? he said.? ?I?m tired,?? And as he spoke, he did an unusual thing.? He lifted his glass and drained it in one swallow although there was still half of it, at least half of it left.. She wasn?t really watching him, but she knew what he had done because she heard the ice cubes falling back against the bottom of the empty glass when he lowered his arm.? He paused a moment, leaning forward in the chair, then he got up and went slowly over to fetch himself another.?I?ll get it!? she cried, jumping up.When he came back, she noticed that the new drink was dark amber with the quantity of whiskey in it.?Darling, shall I get your slippers??She watched him as he began to sip the dark yellow drink, and she could see little oily swirls in the liquid because it was so strong.?I think it?s a shame,? she said, ?that when a policeman gets to be as senior as you, they keep him walking about on his feet all day long.?He didn?t answer, so she bent her head again and went on with her sewing; bet each time he lifted the drink to his lips, she heard the ice cubes clinking against the side of the glass.?Darling,? she said.? ?Would you like me to get you some cheese?? I haven?t made any supper because it?s Thursday.??If you?re too tired to eat out,? she went on, ?it?s still not too late.? There?s plenty of meat and stuff in the freezer, and you can have it right here and not even move out of the chair.?Her eyes waited on him for an answer, a smile, a little nod, but he made no sign.?Anyway,? she went on, ?I?ll get you some cheese and crackers first.??I don?t want it,? he said. She moved uneasily in her chair, the large eyes still watching his face.? ?But you must eat!? I?ll fix it anyway, and then you can have it or not, as you like.?She stood up and placed her sewing on the table by the lamp.?Sit down,? he said.? ?Just for a minute, sit down.?It wasn?t till then that she began to get frightened.?Go on,? he said.? ?Sit down.?She lowered herself back slowly into the chair, watching him all the time with those large, bewildered eyes.? He had finished the second drink and was staring down into the glass, frowning.?Listen,? he said.? ?I?ve got something to tell you.??What is it, darling?? What?s the matter??He had now become absolutely motionless, and he kept his head down so that the light from the lamp beside him fell across the upper part of his face, leaving the chin and mouth in shadow.? She noticed there was a little muscle moving near the corner of his left eye.?This is going to be a bit of a shock to you, I?m afraid,? he said.? ?But I?ve thought about it a good deal and I?ve decided the only thing to do is tell you right away.? I hope you won?t blame me too much.?And he told her.? It didn?t take long, four or five minutes at most, and she say very still through it all, watching him with a kind of dazed horror as he went further and further away from her with each word.?So there it is,? he added.? ?And I know it?s kind of a bad time to be telling you, bet there simply wasn?t any other way.? Of course I?ll give you money and see you?re looked after.? But there needn?t really be any fuss.? I hope not anyway.? It wouldn?t be very good for my job.?Her first instinct was not to believe any of it, to reject it all.? It occurred to her that perhaps he hadn?t even spoken, that she herself had imagined the whole thing.? Maybe, if she went about her business and acted as though she hadn?t been listening, then later, when she sort of woke up again, she might find none of it had ever happened.?I?ll get the supper,? she managed to whisper, and this time he didn?t stop her. When she walked across the room she couldn?t feel her feet touching the floor.? She couldn?t feel anything at all- except a slight nausea and a desire to vomit.? Everything was automatic now-down the steps to the cellar, the light switch, the deep freeze, the hand inside the cabinet taking hold of the first object it met.? She lifted it out, and looked at it.? It was wrapped in paper, so she took off the paper and looked at it again. All right then, they would have lamb for supper.? She carried it upstairs, holding the thin bone-end of it with both her hands, and as she went through the living-room, she saw him standing over by the window with his back to her, and she stopped.?For God?s sake,? he said, hearing her, but not turning round.? ?Don?t make supper for me.? I?m going out.?At that point, Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause she swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head. She might just as well have hit him with a steel club. She stepped back a pace, waiting, and the funny thing was that he remained standing there for at least four or five seconds, gently swaying.? Then he crashed to the carpet. The violence of the crash, the noise, the small table overturning, helped bring her out of he shock.? She came out slowly, feeling cold and surprised, and she stood for a while blinking at the body, still holding the ridiculous piece of meat tight with both hands. All right, she told herself.? So I?ve killed him.It was extraordinary, now, how clear her mind became all of a sudden.? She began thinking very fast.? As the wife of a detective, she knew quite well what the penalty would be.? That was fine.? It made no difference to her.? In fact, it would be a relief.? On the other hand, what about the child?? What were the laws about murderers with unborn children?? Did they kill then both-mother and child?? Or did they wait until the tenth month?? What did they do?Mary Maloney didn?t know.? And she certainly wasn?t prepared to take a chance. She carried the meat into the kitchen, placed it in a pan, turned the oven on high, and shoved t inside.? Then she washed her hands and ran upstairs to the bedroom.? She sat down before the mirror, tidied her hair, touched up her lops and face.? She tried a smile.? It came out rather peculiar.? She tried again.?Hullo Sam,? she said brightly, aloud. The voice sounded peculiar too.?I want some potatoes please, Sam.? Yes, and I think a can of peas.?That was better.? Both the smile and the voice were coming out better now.? She rehearsed it several times more.? Then she ran downstairs, took her coat, went out the back door, down the garden, into the street. It wasn?t six o?clock yet and the lights were still on in the grocery shop.?Hullo Sam,? she said brightly, smiling at the man behind the counter.?Why, good evening, Mrs. Maloney.? How?re you???I want some potatoes please, Sam.? Yes, and I think a can of peas.?The man turned and reached up behind him on the shelf for the peas.?Patrick?s decided he?s tired and doesn?t want to eat out tonight,? she told him.? ?We usually go out Thursdays, you know, and now he?s caught me without any vegetables in the house.??Then how about meat, Mrs. Maloney???No, I?ve got meat, thanks.? I got a nice leg of lamb from the freezer.??I don?t know much like cooking it frozen, Sam, but I?m taking a chance on it this time.? You think it?ll be all right???Personally,? the grocer said, ?I don?t believe it makes any difference.? You want these Idaho potatoes???Oh yes, that?ll be fine.? Two of those.??Anything else?? The grocer cocked his head on one side, looking at her pleasantly.? ?How about afterwards?? What you going to give him for afterwards???Well-what would you suggest, Sam??The man glanced around his shop.? ?How about a nice big slice of cheesecake?? I know he likes that.??Perfect,? she said.? ?He loves it.?And when it was all wrapped and she had paid, she put on her brightest smile and said, ?Thank you, Sam.? Goodnight.??Goodnight, Mrs. Maloney.? And thank you.?And now, she told herself as she hurried back, all she was doing now, she was returning home to her husband and he was waiting for his supper; and she must cook it good, and make it as tasty as possible because the poor man was tired; and if, when she entered the house, she happened to find anything unusual, or tragic, or terrible, then naturally it would be a shock and she?d become frantic with grief and horror.? Mind you, she wasn?t expecting to find anything.? She was just going home with the vegetables. Mrs. Patrick Maloney going home with the vegetables on Thursday evening to cook supper for her husband. That?s the way, she told herself.? Do everything right and natural.? Keep things absolutely natural and there?ll be no need for any acting at all. Therefore, when she entered the kitchen by the back door, she was humming a little tune to herself and smiling.?Patrick!? she called.? ?How are you, darling??She put the parcel down on the table and went through into the living room; and when she saw him lying there on the floor with his legs doubled up and one arm twisted back underneath his body, it really was rather a shock.? All the old love and longing for him welled up inside her, and she ran over to him, knelt down beside him, and began to cry her heart out.? It was easy.? No acting was necessary.A few minutes later she got up and went to the phone.? She know the number of the police station, and when the man at the other end answered, she cried to him, ?Quick!? Come quick!? Patrick?s dead!??Mrs. Maloney.? Mrs. Patrick Maloney.??You mean Patrick Maloney?s dead???I think so,? she sobbed.? ?He?s lying on the floor and I think he?s dead.??Be right over,? the man said. The car came very quickly, and when she opened the front door, two policeman walked in.? She know them both-she know nearly all the man at that precinct-and she fell right into a chair, then went over to join the other one, who was called O?Malley, kneeling by the body.?Is he dead?? she cried.?I?m afraid he is.? What happened??Briefly, she told her story about going out to the grocer and coming back to find him on the floor.? While she was talking, crying and talking, Noonan discovered a small patch of congealed blood on the dead man?s head.? He showed it to O?Malley who got up at once and hurried to the phone.Soon, other men began to come into the house.? First a doctor, then two detectives, one of whom she know by name.? Later, a police photographer arrived and took pictures, and a man who know about fingerprints.? There was a great deal of whispering and muttering beside the corpse, and the detectives kept asking her a lot of questions.? But they always treated her kindly.? She told her story again, this time right from the beginning, when Patrick had come in, and she was sewing, and he was tired, so tired he hadn?t wanted to go out for supper.? She told how she?d put the meat in the oven-?it?s there now, cooking?- and how she?d slopped out to the grocer for vegetables, and come back to find him lying on the floor.Which grocer?? one of the detectives asked. She told him, and he turned and whispered something to the other detective who immediately went outside into the street. In fifteen minutes he was back with a page of notes, and there was more whispering, and through her sobbing she heard a few of the whispered phrases-?...acted quite normal...very cheerful...wanted to give him a good supper?peas...cheesecake...impossible that she...?After a while, the photographer and the doctor departed and two other men came in and took the corpse away on a stretcher.? Then the fingerprint man went away.? The two detectives remained, and so did the two policeman.? They were exceptionally nice to her, and Jack Noonan asked if she wouldn?t rather go somewhere else, to her sister?s house perhaps, or to his own wife who would take care of her and put her up for the night. No, she said.? She didn?t feel she could move even a yard at the moment.? Would they mind awfully of she stayed just where she was until she felt better.? She didn?t feel too good at the moment, she really didn?t.Then hadn?t she better lie down on the bed?? Jack Noonan asked. No, she said.? She?d like to stay right where she was, in this chair.? A little later, perhaps, when she felt better, she would move.So they left her there while they went about their business, searching the house.? Occasionally on of the detectives asked her another question.? Sometimes Jack Noonan spoke at her gently as he passed by.? Her husband, he told her, had been killed by a blow on the back of the head administered with a heavy blunt instrument, almost certainly a large piece of metal.? They were looking for the weapon.? The murderer may have taken it with him, but on the other hand he may have thrown it away or hidden it somewhere on the premises.?It?s the old story,? he said.? ?Get the weapon, and you?ve got the man.?Later, one of the detectives came up and sat beside her.? Did she know, he asked, of anything in the house that could?ve been used as the weapon?? Would she mind having a look around to see if anything was missing-a very big spanner, for example, or a heavy metal vase. They didn?t have any heavy metal vases, she said. She didn?t think they had a big spanner.? But there might be some things like that in the garage. The search went on.? She knew that there were other policemen in the garden all around the house.? She could hear their footsteps on the gravel outside, and sometimes she saw a flash of a torch through a chink in the curtains.? It began to get late, nearly nine she noticed by the clock on the mantle.? The four men searching the rooms seemed to be growing weary, a trifle exasperated.?Jack,? she said, the next tome Sergeant Noonan went by.? ?Would you mind giving me a drink???Sure I?ll give you a drink.? You mean this whiskey???Yes please.? But just a small one.? It might make me feel better.??Why don?t you have one yourself,? she said.? ?You must be awfully tired.? Please do.? You?ve been very good to me.??Well,? he answered.? ?It?s not strictly allowed, but I might take just a drop to keep me going.?One by one the others came in and were persuaded to take a little nip of whiskey.? They stood around rather awkwardly with the drinks in their hands, uncomfortable in her presence, trying to say consoling things to her.? Sergeant Noonan wandered into the kitchen, come out quickly and said, ?Look, Mrs. Maloney.? You know that oven of yours is still on, and the meat still inside.??Oh dear me!? she cried.? ?So it is!??I better turn it off for you, hadn?t I???Will you do that, Jack.? Thank you so much.?When the sergeant returned the second time, she looked at him with her large, dark tearful eyes.? ?Jack Noonan,? she said.?Would you do me a small favor-you and these others???We can try, Mrs. Maloney.??Well,? she said.? ?Here you all are, and good friends of dear Patrick?s too, and helping to catch the man who killed him.? You must be terrible hungry by now because it?s long past your suppertime, and I know Patrick would never forgive me, God bless his soul, if I allowed you to remain in his house without offering you decent hospitality.? Why don?t you eat up that lamb that?s in the oven.? It?ll be cooked just right by now.??Wouldn?t dream of it,? Sergeant Noonan said.?Please,? she begged.? ?Please eat it.? Personally I couldn?t tough a thing, certainly not what?s been in the house when he was here.? But it?s all right for you.? It?d be a favor to me if you?d eat it up.? Then you can go on with your work again afterwards.?There was a good deal of hesitating among the four policemen, but they were clearly hungry, and in the end they were persuaded to go into the kitchen and help themselves.? The woman stayed where she was, listening to them speaking among themselves, their voices thick and sloppy because their mouths were full of meat.?Have some more, Charlie???No.? Better not finish it.??She wants us to finish it. She said so.? Be doing her a favour.??Okay then.? Give me some more.??That?s the hell of a big club the gut must?ve used to hit poor Patrick,? one of them was saying.? ?The doc says his skull was smashed all to pieces just like from a sledgehammer.??That?s why it ought to be easy to find.??Exactly what I say.??Whoever done it, they?re not going to be carrying a thing like that around with them longer than they need.??Personally, I think it?s right here on the premises.??Probably right under our very noses.? What you think, Jack??And in the other room, Mary Maloney began to giggle.

Terrific ? isn?t it? The murder weapon ? ?Probably right under our very noses?. Till now I wrote short fiction. Now I am trying to write a novel. The other day I got stuck ? too many characters, too many things happening, too much confusion, I was trying to say too much. I stopped writing and switched on my TV. A movie began. It was the evergreen romantic comedy ROMAN HOLIDAY starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. I watched spellbound ? a simple story with just two characters told in a down-to-earth uncomplicated fashion. It is the same with Roald Dahl?s LAMB TO THE SLAUGHTER ? the way the story is narrated ? breathtaking in its simplicity. I have got the hint ? that is how I am going to write my novel ? simple, so I am redoing my first draft ? and whenever I am confused, I will pick up one of my favourite short stories for a clue.I trust you have read my earlier posts on my favourite stories.
