Florida GOP voters lift Romney on electability (AP)

Voters in Tuesday's Florida Republican primary chose Mitt Romney as the candidate best able to beat President Barack Obama in the fall, preferring electability over ideology in lifting the former Massachusetts governor to a broad victory despite concerns that his issue positions are not conservative enough.

ROMNEY RECAPTURES ELECTABILTY: A majority of Florida GOP voters said Romney is the candidate best able to beat Obama in a general election matchup; only about 3 in 10 said the same of Newt Gingrich. And Romney carried 58 percent of the votes among those seeking a candidate who could defeat the president in November. Gingrich had a strong showing among those seeking a true conservative and a narrow edge over Romney among those seeking an experienced candidate.

CONSERVATIVES THEN AND NOW: In 2008, Romney carried the mantle of conservative alternative to eventual Republican nominee John McCain. This time around, 41 percent of Florida voters said Romney's issue positions are not conservative enough, and very conservative voters were more apt to back Gingrich than the former governor of Massachusetts. Strong supporters of the tea party movement also favored Gingrich over Romney, but Romney carried 50 percent or more among those who support the movement somewhat, are neutral or oppose it.

THE GENDER GAP: Romney won by a wide margin among women after a deeply negative campaign in Florida raising questions about Gingrich's character. Women were more apt than men to say they were influenced by campaign advertising, and were a bit more likely to say a candidate's "strong moral character" was the most important factor in their vote. In the end, only 45 percent of women in the poll report holding a positive opinion of Gingrich as a person, compared with 79 percent who have a positive opinion of Romney.

ECONOMIC CONCERNS TRUMP ALL: About 6 in 10 said the economy was their top issue in choosing a candidate, about half said foreclosures were having a major impact on their community, and 3 in 10 said they were falling behind financially.

SEEKING OTHER CHOICES: Thirty-eight percent of voters said they would like to see someone else run for the nomination, more than said so in New Hampshire a few weeks ago, though the window for another candidate to join the field is nearly closed. Just over half of voters said they would be satisfied if Gingrich or Rick Santorum became the nominee. More, 65 percent, said they'd be satisfied with a Romney candidacy, including 43 percent who voted for Gingrich and 46 percent who backed Santorum.

LATINO VOTERS: A majority of Hispanics in Florida backed Romney, a sharp improvement over his 2008 showing of 14 percent among Hispanic voters. He improved even more among Cuban voters, climbing from 9 percent in 2008 to 57 percent now.

IMMIGRATION: Very few voters called illegal immigration a top consideration in their vote, though the issue was raised frequently as the candidates battled to win this first state with a sizable Latino population. According to the exit poll, GOP primary voters this year were less apt than in 2008 to say illegal immigrants working in the U.S. should be deported to the country they came from, and about 4 in 10 feel they should be offered the chance to become citizens.

EARLY BIRD SPECIAL: Florida's voters say they made up their minds early. Just 26 percent say they made a final decision about whom to support in the last few days, compared with 55 percent in South Carolina and 46 percent in New Hampshire and Iowa.

The survey of 2,835 Republican voters was conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks by Edison Research. This includes results among 2,235 voters interviewed Tuesday as they left their polling places at 40 randomly selected sites in Florida. In addition, 600 who voted early or absentee were interviewed by landline or cellular telephone from Jan. 23 to 29. The survey has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

'Mayo Clinic Healthy Heart For Life!' reveals innovative heart disease prevention and treatment plan

ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Heart disease is the nation's No. 1 killer for both men and women. But what's most astonishing is that almost 80 percent of heart disease is preventable, and even small lifestyle changes can have a big impact.

Based on an innovative yet simple "Eat 5, Move 10, Sleep 8" program, Mayo Clinic Healthy Heart For Life! provides the latest, clinically proven information on heart disease prevention and a step-by-step quick-start plan that breaks through the clutter and helps people understand exactly where to focus:

  • Eat 5 or more vegetables or fruits per day. It's not just the protective nutrients they supply, but also that you'll have less room for junk.
  • Move 10 extra minutes each day. Recent studies show that a sedentary lifestyle may increase your risk of heart attack as much as smoking does. It's as simple as standing instead of sitting as much as possible.
  • Sleep at least 8 hours per day. Chronic sleep deprivation has devastating effects on your heart. It is not a luxury, it's a necessity.
  • In addition, enjoy life. Discover what brings you joy and satisfaction. Your mental and emotional state influence heart health just as your genetic makeup and lifestyle habits can.

"As soon you pick up the book, you can start making a difference in your heart health," says Mayo Clinic cardiologist, Martha Grogan, M.D. medical editor-in-chief of Mayo Clinic Healthy Heart For Life! "And, it's easier than you might think. For example, moving even 10 minutes a day for someone who's been sedentary can reduce the risk for heart disease by 50 percent."

In this book, Dr. Grogan and a multi-disciplinary team of Mayo Clinic experts discuss key actions to jump-start heart health. The book also offers management strategies for individuals with pre-existing heart conditions; explains how the heart works and what can go wrong; and offers additional tools, tips and resources to overcome obstacles and support your heart disease prevention plan.

Boatright attorney blasts NCAA after probe (AP)

HARTFORD, Conn. ? A lawyer representing the mother of Connecticut guard Ryan Boatright says the family is considering legal options after the NCAA detailed its investigation into the freshman's eligibility.

The NCAA has cleared Boatright to play, but said Saturday he and his mother had accepted more than $8,000 in impermissible benefits from at least two people.

Attorney Scott Tompsett issued a statement Sunday calling the NCAA's news release false and misleading. He said the people providing the benefits were friends of the Boatright family and had "no expectation of repayment or reciprocation."

Boatright has missed nine games this season as a result of the investigation, including a six-game suspension to start the season, and is repaying $4,500 in benefits.

The 6-foot Boatright was back in uniform Sunday as UConn hosted Notre Dame.

Officers checking robbery find 5 dead in Ala. home

(AP) ? Police officers called early Sunday morning to investigate a possible robbery at a home in Birmingham found five people dead inside, authorities said.

Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams said the officers arrived at the house around 3:30 a.m. Sunday after getting a call that a robbery was in progress and soon discovered the five victims.

The victims were not immediately identified, and the cause of death was not yet released. No arrests or charges were filed on Sunday morning, but Williams said police launched a homicide investigation.

Brenda Houston, who lives across the street from the west Birmingham house where the bodies were found, said the house had been rented for about a year and a half by a woman in her late 40s and her son and brothers.

"They would speak to us, and that's all we knew," she said. "We didn't know their names but they were always friendly."

Houston, 64, said her street was a quiet one filled with older residents who were friendly with each other. She said there was a constant stream of visitors coming in and out of the home, but that the residents never seemed to cause any disturbances.

"Most people are in a state of shock. They never had any trouble over there," Houston said. "I never seen the police over there. This was really strange that this happened. It wasn't like they were real rowdy."

OWC Mercury Aura Pro Express SATA 3.0 SSDs doubles your (MacBook) Airspeed velocity

It's MacWorld, which means those providers of Apple gear are busting out wares for aftermarket insertion into your objects of desire. Other World Computing's latest offering is a slender solid-state drive ready to be crow-barred into last year's MacBook Airs. The bombastically named OWC Mercury Aura Pro Express 6G SSD is a SATA Rev. 3.0 drive with a promised 6Gb/s data speed at sizes of up to a staggering 480GB. Since the stock drives are limited to the 3Gb/s SATA Rev. 2.0 (but the controllers run 3.0), you should find a significant performance bump when swapping in the new unit. The toggle-synchronous NAND drives come in a variety of sizes, starting at 120GB ($260), but it's the brand new and quite beastly 480GB model that has us excited. Sure, $1,150 is a lot to ask for less than half a terrabyte of storage, but you'll get a three-year warranty for all that cash. We may never give you our money, nor our funny pages, but you can have the press release that's after the break.

Hispanics in focus as GOP race intensifies in Fla. (AP)

DORAL, Fla. ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is suggesting that the news media is responsible for tarnishing his party's reputation among immigrants.

Addressing a Hispanic leadership conference near Miami, Romney said Republicans aren't against immigrants or immigration. He said a Romney presidency would expand legal immigration and bring a commitment and conviction that the mainstream media would not be allowed to confuse.

Romney also said that in his first 100 days in office he would name a Latin American envoy to measure and improve relations with those countries. He also wants to create a hemispheric task force to focus on drugs and other threats from Latin America.

He said America needs to work harder at selling democracy in the region.

Newt Gingrich addressed the conference earlier Friday. Florida's presidential primary is Tuesday.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is calling for a measured approach to revising the nation's immigration laws, saying "too many enemies" stand in the way of sweeping change.

The former House speaker says he wants stricter border control, faster deportation proceedings and a guest worker program for certain immigrants.

Gingrich spoke Friday at a conference of influential Hispanic leaders meeting near Miami.

Immigration is a major flashpoint issue among the GOP presidential candidates in Florida. They are trying to strike a balance between sounding compassionate yet firm about stemming the tide of illegal immigration.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was scheduled to address the conference on Friday afternoon.

Florida's presidential primary is Tuesday.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

More than a million Hispanic voters are the prize as Republican presidential rivals Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich campaign hard in Florida after a feisty, final debate that served to heighten political tensions with the state's GOP primary just days away.

Romney was the aggressor Thursday night in the second debate in four days, pressing Gingrich to apologize for an ad labeling him as anti-immigrant and calling the idea "repulsive."

Both men arranged for appearances Friday in Miami with the Hispanic Leadership Network. The state has roughly 1.5 million Hispanic voters, who figure to play prominently in next Tuesday's Florida primary.

Immigration sparked the first clash Thursday night, moments after the debate opened, when Gingrich responded to a question by saying Romney was the most anti-immigrant of all four contenders on stage. "That's simply inexcusable," the former Massachusetts governor responded.

Gingrich fired back that Romney misled voters by running an ad accusing the former House speaker of once referring to Spanish as "the language of the ghetto." Gingrich said he was referring to a multitude of languages, not just Spanish.

Romney initially said of the ad, "I doubt it's mine," but moderator Wolf Blitzer pointed out that Romney, at the ad's conclusion, says he approved the message.

Gingrich rushed out an ad using debate footage that raised questions about Romney's credibility, including his reluctance to own up to the "ghetto" commercial. "If we can't trust Romney in a debate, how can we trust him in the White House," a narrator says in the Gingrich ad.

The debate was the 19th since the race for the Republican nomination began last year, and came five days before the Florida primary. Opinion polls show a close race, with a slight advantage for Romney and two other contenders, former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania and Texas Rep. Ron Paul, far behind.

Paul has already made clear his intention to skip Florida in favor of smaller, less-expensive states. And Santorum, who had been campaigning aggressively here, conceded that he's better off sitting at his own kitchen table Saturday doing his taxes instead of campaigning in a state where he simply can't keep up with the GOP front-runners.

Outside advisers are urging him to pack up in Florida completely and not spend another minute in a state where he is cruising toward a loss.

The cash-strapped Santorum said he'll make a handful of Florida campaign stops early in the day, but will finish Friday with his family in Pennsylvania, where he'll spend all day Saturday before returning to Florida.

Still, Santorum stood out at times Thursday night.

He drew applause when he called on the front-runners to stop attacking one another. "Can we set aside that Newt was a member of Congress ... and that Mitt Romney is a wealthy guy?" he said in a tone of exasperation.

On Friday, Santorum said the finger-pointing between the two leaders is obscuring how similar both are to President Barack Obama on issues such as health care ? and making it harder to tell voters about his more conservative views.

"There are important issues in this race," Santorum told Fox News. "How people made money, all legitimately in my mind, should have nothing to do with it."

In the days since Romney's loss in South Carolina, Romney has tried to seize the initiative, playing the aggressor in the Tampa debate and assailing Gingrich in campaign speeches and a TV commercial. An outside group formed to support Romney has spent more than his own campaign's millions on ads, some of them designed to stop Gingrich's campaign momentum before it is too late to deny him the nomination.

With polls suggesting his South Carolina surge is stalling, Gingrich unleashed a particularly strong attack earlier in the day, much as he lashed out in Iowa when he rose in the polls, only to be knocked back by an onslaught of ads he was unable to counter effectively.

But he struggled to find an effective attack in the debate and was more often on the defensive.

Romney pounced when the topic turned to Gingrich's proposal for a permanent American colony on the moon ? an issue of particular interest to engineers and others who live on Florida's famed Space Coast.

A career businessman before he became a politician, Romney said: "If I had a business executive come to me and say I want to spend a few hundred billion dollars to put a colony on the moon, I'd say, `You're fired.'"

Gingrich tried to raise questions about Romney's wealth and his investments. "I don't know of any American president who's had a Swiss bank account," Gingrich said.

Romney replied that his investments were in a blind trust over which he had no control. "There's nothing wrong with that," declared Romney, who has estimated his wealth at as much as $250 million.

Secret Service to probe bullet-ridden Obama image

A photograph showing a group of men with guns posing with a bullet-ridden image of Barack Obama's face is to be investigated by the Secret Service, a spokesman confirmed to NBC News.

The New York Times reported that the picture showed seven young men, four with weapons, one of whom was holding a T-shirt with the president's face on it, above the word "HOPE." The T-shirt was covered in holes and gashes.

The Times said the photograph was posted on the Facebook page of a Peoria, Ariz. police officer, Sgt. Pat Shearer, on Jan. 20.

"We are aware of it. Anytime information is brought to our attention that a group or individual expresses an unusual interest in one of our protectees, we conduct the appropriate follow-up," Secret Service spokesman Max Milien told NBC News.

"We respect the right of free speech and expression but we certainly have the right and obligation to speak to individuals to determine what their intent is," he added. "We treat anything (any potential threat) seriously. We can't dismiss anything."

Jay A. Davies, a police spokesman, told the Times in an email that "an administrative investigation into any possible policy violations on the part of our employee" was being carried out.

The paper added that the photograph also appeared on the Facebook page of someone in the picture, who was identified as a Peoria high school student.

Shearer, who said he would sacrifice his life for President Barack Obama, told ABC15 that he didn't "think that them shooting up the T-shirt was a big deal."

"I think it was more of a political statement obviously," he added. "It?s not like they were going to go out and shoot the president.?

Ortega did not say anything during the proceedings and will remain held without bond. He has another court date next month.

Gunman who shot at federal buildings pleads guilty

Prosecutors say Ortega used an assault rifle with an attached scope to fire a series of shots at the White House from long range on the night of Nov. 11. Obama and his wife, Michelle, were out of town at the time.

In the months before the shooting, investigators say, he had had become obsessed with Obama, referred to him as the anti-Christ and told at least one person that he planned to "take care of" the president.

Obama turns attention to energy in key states

Ortega, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, was indicted last week on 17 counts including trying to assassinate the president, transporting a firearm across state lines and assaulting officers or employees of the United States with a deadly weapon.

Those charges refer to three Secret Service employees who authorities say were on the grounds of the White House at the time of the shooting.

The hearing took place in the same week that a lawyer for John Hinckley, who was found not guilty by reason of insanity in a 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, is making his case for extended time away from the psychiatric hospital where Hinckley has been confined.

Nintendo Wii U to have touch-free payment system

Nintendo has announced that the tablet-like controller of its next console, the Wii U, will come equipped with a near-field communications (NFC) chip, opening up the possibility of new kinds of games and new ways to pay for them.

"By installing this functionality, it will become possible to create cards and figurines that can electronically read and write data via non-contact NFC and to expand the new play format in the video game world," said Nintendo president Satoru Iwata.

A game released last year called Skylanders used NFC technology to bring toy models into its virtual environment, but that required a special hardware add-on - the new controller will allow any game on the Wii U to do the same.

Iwata also suggested the chips could be used to pay for new in-game content via an NFC-enabled phone system, such as the recently launched Google Wallet. "Adoption of this functionality will enable various other possibilities, such as using it as a means of making micropayments," he said.

The company plans to announce the final details of the Wii U in June at E3, the video game industry's biggest annual gathering, and will release the console later this year.

It?s the end of the world, and Jericho feels fine

With the mere utterance of a single declarative sentence Monday night, Chris Jericho revved up a WWE Universe that has patiently waited since Jan. 2 to hear the former champion say something ? anything ? about his headline-grabbing return. (PHOTOS | WATCH)

Now that the silence has officially broken and it is known that Jericho will take part in the 25th anniversary of the Royal Rumble Match, the WWE Universe moves on to the next step in demystifying his reappearance: figuring out what, exactly, his foreboding intimation on Raw SuperShow is supposed to mean.

As with everything else that Jericho has done since coming back, his curt proclamation Monday night posed more questions than it answered.

?This Sunday at the Royal Rumble, it?s going to be the end of the world as you know it,? he concisely stated during his first ?Highlight Reel? segment on Raw in nearly four years.

Chris Jericho's intimations continue to confound.Aside from paraphrasing the least karaoke-friendly song in R.E.M.?s catalog, Jericho?s apocalyptic prophecy served largely to befuddle viewers. It has not gone unnoticed that Jericho waited until the first month of a year packed with various end-of-the-world conspiracies to deliver his brief doomsday warning. Yet, with the purported end-time date, Dec. 21, 2012, still months away, smart money says the most incandescent thing the WWE Universe will see Sunday is Jericho?s jacket ? not killer solar flares.

Nor has it been forgotten that the cryptic videos trumpeting Jericho?s return shared a common tagline ? ?The End Begins? ? that seems to speak to whatever Armageddon Jericho has in mind for the Rumble.

So how in the world does one begin making sense of these snippets of information, and what do they portend for the Rumble Sunday?

Let?s begin with what is already known: On Jan. 29, live on pay-per-view, Jericho will enter the Royal Rumble Match, marking the first time in more than a year that the first Undisputed WWE Champion in history will actually compete in the ring. (Jericho?s offense during Raw SuperShow?s six-Superstar tag team match two weeks ago was limited to tagging in and out of the action.) With his legacy firmly intact, Jericho has made the bold, if not foolhardy, decision to shake off any lingering ring rust in one of WWE?s most trying and prestigious battling grounds ? the Royal Rumble Match.

By foretelling that the ?end of the world? will happen at the Royal Rumble, maybe Jericho was simply warning his fellow Superstars to not sleep on the cagey warhorse returning from a long layoff. ?It?s not outside the realm of possibility that Jericho believes life for WWE Superstars is easier without him in the picture; perhaps the Royal Rumble Match ? and a Jericho victory ? would signify the end of the cushy life for Superstars who?ve grown accustomed to a post-Jericho world.

Maybe Jericho?s remark Monday concerned all that has transpired in WWE during his absence. Since Randy Orton punted Jericho out of action in late 2010, Raw SuperShow has experienced Superstar walkouts and power grabs, not to mention a revolution started in earnest by WWE Champion CM Punk. Jericho sat on the sidelines while WWE underwent radical changes and an entirely new crop of talent blossomed. Could that be the ?world? to which Jericho?s referring?Since his return, Chris Jericho has been warmly received by the WWE Universe.

Or, perhaps it?s wrong to assume it was other Superstars that Jericho was putting on notice with his comment last Monday.

In examining Jericho?s one-sentence promo, it is important to note the exact verbiage he used: ?the end of the world as you know it.? Could he have even been referring to the loyal WWE Universe, which has embraced Jericho?s sometimes-cheesy antics with open arms?

If so, Jericho?s remark would seem to imply that despite his gushing and, at times, tearful, response to the WWE Universe?s warm reception, Jericho?s worldview does not entirely dovetail with theirs. Maybe Jericho?s premonition foreshadows an end in sight for the good feelings?

With the 25th anniversary of Royal Rumble just around the corner, it is only a matter of days before the veil of mystery is lifted and the thrust of Jericho?s vague promise is revealed for all to see. What is clear in the present moment is that Jericho knows something, and the rest of us can only speculate as to what that something is.

Knewton Prepares To Take Education by Storm [TCTV]

19086v8-max-250x250Here at the World Economic Forum in Davos, among the banking, shipping, steel and transport magnates of the global economy, there are a number of technology entrepreneurs floating around. As they rub shoulders with the likes of Eric Schmidt, Sean Parker, Loic Le Meur and Robert Scoble, it's possible to peel them off from the crowd. I managed to catch Jose Ferreira, CEO and Founder of Knewton a startup which is aiming a silver bullet at the education problem with something that one might even call an audacious platform.

Chris Weidman: From parents? basement to network TV

CHICAGO -- Ten months ago, Chris Weidman was living in his parents' basement with his wife and daughter. After winning three straight fights in the UFC, he will challenge Demian Maia on the UFC's second show on network television.

At Wednesday's open workouts for UFC on Fox 2, Weidman said he has not had time to sit back and think about all he's accomplished in such a short time.

"I really haven't set back to think about it all in a 10-month period. It started getting tough. Any amount of money at that point was going to get me to come," Weidman said.

When he took the fight with Alessio Sakara last March, he was on the verge of signing with Bellator. He even had dinner reservations to celebrate the signing, but gave himself more time to consider the contract. Waiting opened the door for the UFC to sign him.

By July, he had a decision over Sakara and a submission of Jesse Bongfeldt, and a new home for his wife and now two-year-old daughter Cassidy.

Weidman's spot on the card this weekend was just as surprising. When Mark Munoz was injured last week, the UFC had to scramble to create a card that would make people tune in to Fox. Michael Bisping was given the spot against Chael Sonnen, leaving a hole on the card to fight Maia. Weidman, who beat Tom Lawlor in November, was called.

"At the time, I was surprised, because I thought I was going to fight April 22. But I had a funny feeling that something was going to end up happening.

The bout against Maia was too good to pass up, even on 10 days notice.

"At first it was that I'm not going to fight him this week. I'm going to fight him eventually. March, April. Once I talked to my coach and decided that, they came back and said he doesn't want to leave this card. I got so excited to fight Maia at that point, I didn't care where or when."

His first concern was weight. Weidman said he was around 217 lbs. last week. Though he says that his weight is fine now, he had to turn down the comfort food his wife was cooking.

"First thing was my weight. My wife was making sloppy joes, and I was like, 'No more sloppy joes for me!' I headed to the gym, ate a spoonful of peanut butter, and that's it for me."

Beating Maia, an accomplished grappler, would push Weidman ever closer to a title shot. Though fighters taking bouts on short notice are often in a no-lose situation, Weidman sees this bout as a must-win.

"I don't see it [as no-lose]. I see it as I have to win this fight. If I win this fight, it puts me on a list of contenders, and closer to getting that belt."

His intention is not to just fight for the UFC middleweight belt, but also to fight in his home state of New York. Currently, MMA is illegal in New York.

"My main goal is obviously to not only get the belt, but fight at Madison Square Garden in New York. It would be a dream come true. They have to legalize it, but at the right time so I can be fighting on it for the belt."

Weidman hopes the shows on Fox will help change perceptions on fighters.

"We're 100 percent athletes. Just turn on the TV and watch us. Come meet us. We're not those guys 10 years ago who were perceived as brutal. We're athletes. Good guys. Trying to make a living for our families."

Long Island's Weidman hopes to start New York on its winning ways. As a New York Giants fan, Weidman wants to see his team win the Super Bowl.

"I like Tom Brady, he's a pretty good guy, but we're coming after him."

29, live on pay-per-view, Jericho will enter the Royal Rumble Match, marking the first time in more than a year that the first Undisputed WWE Champion in history steps into the ring as an active competitor. With his legacy firmly intact, Jericho has made the bold, if not foolhardy, decision to shake off any lingering ring rust in one of WWE?s most trying and prestigious battling grounds ? the Royal Rumble Match.

Since Randy Orton punted Y2J out of action in late 2010, Raw SuperShow has experienced Superstar walkouts and power grabs, not to mention a revolution started in earnest by WWE Champion CM Punk. Jericho sat on the sidelines while WWE underwent radical changes and an entirely new crop of talent blossomed. Could that be the ?world? to which Jericho?s referring?Since his return, Chris Jericho has been warmly received by the WWE Universe.

Fire badly damages 19th century church in Ukraine (AP)

KIEV, Ukraine ? Emergency officials say a fire has badly damaged a 19th-century Orthodox church in southern Ukraine, including collapsing its dome.

No injuries have been reported.

The fire at the landmark Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral in the town of Bolhrad outside the Black Sea port of Odessa broke out Thursday during renovation work, the Emergency Situations Ministry said on its website.

The church's dome collapsed before the fire was put out.

Officials say the fire could have been caused by a violation of safety rules during the renovation.

In Brief

  • Who: Joanna Aizenberg
  • Vocation|Avocation: Runs a biomimetics lab
  • Where: Harvard University
  • Research Focus: Takes inspiration from nature for designing new types of materials.
  • Big Picture: ?What we do, then, is study interesting biological systems, but with the eyes of a physical scientist.?

Among the first things you notice when you step into the corner office of Harvard University professor Joanna Aizenberg are the playthings. Behind her desk sit a sand dollar, an azure butterfly mounted in a box, a plastic stand with long fibers that erupt in color when a switch is pulled, and haphazard rows of toys. Especially numerous are the Rubik?s cubes?the classic three-by-three, of course, but also ones with four, five, six and even seven mini cubes along each edge. An eight-year-old would be in heaven.
