Home schooled children can develop perfectly good socialization skills, but naturally this isn?t always the case. If parents want their kids to be well socialized, and not just well educated, they have to pay equal attention to both important realms. It?s crucial that parents don?t overlook the importance of socialization in their kids, as this is just as essential for their future happiness and success as any other skill.
You can?t always go by what a child seems to want, as some children are shy and will tend to avoid socializing. If this continues, the child may never get used to being around other people and this could be harmful in the long run. That is why the parent has a responsibility to have a clear understanding of the dynamics inherent in homeschooling. Along with academic subjects, children need to participate in social activities with kids their own age.
Parents are aware of the concerns regarding developing healthy social skills in homeschooled children. So the natural result of that concern is to ensure there are adequate opportunities for social interaction. In fact, there are many options for including direct and more social types of excursions that are a part of the child?s education. Many homeschoolers are heavily involved in extracurricular activities in their communities. Most children in public schools cannot say the same thing. Parents of kids in public schools typically believe their children are getting the socialization they need at school so they don?t make the effort to actively encourage their children to participate.
Homeschool students often join support groups. These groups might also be affiliated with a local church. Socialization is being addressed as you can see the efforts being made to provide social outlets. Homeschoolers tend to be in more diverse groups when it comes to their social activities. Active interaction with other age groups is not unusual for these students. This is a rarity in public schools for two reasons. First, the schools do not encourage it, and secondly there is peer pressure to avoid interacting with younger ages.
In the degree of socialization, there seems to be a trade-off, but it is worth it when other considerations are made. The homeschooler can be spared from the many types of bad social encounters found at public and private schools. That fact alone can be huge considering the effects of the institutional school environment. This is definitely applicable to students who are at a public school and have a social disadvantage. There are positive and healthy advantages experienced in schooling at home. So it seems children who are home schooled have greater opportunities for higher quality education and social development. This is because their parents know how it important it is to get their children out in various setting with other children. And, depending on your location, there are plenty of groups available where children can be with others their age.
