Backpacking is a great way to escape the rat race and be one with nature. Alas, your backpacking experiences can fade with time. Why not make a record of your backpacking travels for posterity?
Backpacking Journals
Think back of the last time you strapped on your backpack and went hiking and camping. Can you recall of anything that caught your attention? Think back farther when you first discovered the joys of backpacking. Undoubtedly, you remember few things about the geography, people you went with, particular backpacking routes and spectacular views. Most are probably buried in the sands of time. If you had kept a backpacking journal, this won?t be the case.
There are many instances in history of people who kept their own personal records. Of course, Anne Frank?s Diary is the best example. The diary chronicles Anne?s life for a period of two years while in hiding from Nazi persecution. While your backpacking experiences better be more lighthearted, keeping a journal will let you remember them as the years pass.
The features and qualities of a backpacking diary are enumerated below. The journal must be small for easy stowing and to save on backpack space. Second, it must be in a waterproof and durable holder or container to protect against liquid and material damage. Third, it must have enough blank pages for your writings along the way. Last, make a list of subjects that you must keep a record of which should serve as your reference. Cues should include.
Your backpacking companions,
The places you went to and your observations,
Names and particulars of people you have met,
The geographic and weather conditions,
The roads taken and your farthest reaches, and
Interesting tidbits you noted along the way.
A good record should have accumulated sufficient data for future reference to include the following.
Your backpacking buddies and other people you have had contact with,
Enough detail to provide you or a friend with a guide if you backpack the location a second time.
Notes and commentaries for your later musings.
A narrative of your exploits for the following generations.
As much as possible, keep a running account of your experiences or immediately thereafter. A day long hike or an overnight trek is a story in itself.
Backpacking is a great way to commune with nature. You owe it to yourself to keep a written account.
