Afghan officials: We'll find tortured bride's husband

By msnbc.com staff and news services

A 10-man police force is hunting down the husband of a teen bride who was tortured and locked away in a toilet by her in-laws for months after she refused to become a prostitute, Afghan officials told the BBC.

"This is incredibly serious and not acceptable and all those responsible will be brought in to make an example to others," an Interior Ministry spokesman told the?BBC on Tuesday.

Sahar Gul, 15, was in critical condition when she was rescued from a house in Afghanistan?s northern Baghlan province last week, after her neighbors reported hearing her crying and moaning in pain.

The case has shocked Afghanistan, though rights activists say serious abuses against women and girls in the ultra-conservative?society are common. President Hamid Karzai has said that whoever used violence against Gul will be punished.

Her?mother-in-law and sister-in-law were arrested, but her husband, Ghulam Sakhi, 30,?has eluded authorities, Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqi said.

Sakhi was?identified as a soldier in the Afghan National Army who served in Helmand Province, The New York Times?reported.

'One of the worst cases'
According to officials in northeastern Baghlan province, Gul's in-laws kept the girl in a basement for six months, ripped her fingernails out, tortured her with hot irons and broke her fingers.?

"She was married seven months ago, and was originally from Badakhshan province. Her in-laws tried to force her into prostitution to earn money," Rahima Zarifi, head of women's affairs in Baghlan, told Reuters.

Gul was covered in scars and bruises, with one eye still swollen shut six days after her rescue. She was being treated in a government hospital in Kabul, but her recovery needed extensive care and she may have to be sent to India, doctors said.

"This is one of the worst cases of violence against Afghan women. The perpetrators must be punished so others learn a lesson," health minister Suraya Dalil told journalists after meeting with the victim last week.

"This is an un-Islamic and inhuman act,? Baghlan governor, Munshi Abdul Majid, told? The New York Times.?

Distressing chapter in Afghan culture
Despite progress in women's rights and freedom since the fall of the Taliban a decade ago, women throughout the country are still at risk of abduction, rape, forced marriage and being traded as commodity.

It can be difficult for women to escape violent situations at home, because of?relentless social and sometimes legal pressure to stay in marriages.

Running away from an abusive husband?is considered a?"moral crime," for which women can be imprisoned in Afghanistan.

Some rape victims have also been imprisoned, because sex outside marriage, even when the woman is forced, is considered adultery, another "moral crime."

In an NFL stunner, Colts fire Bill and Chris Polian

In a move that would have been unimaginable a few months ago, the Indianapolis Colts fired Bill and Chris Polian, the father-and-son tandem atop one of the NFL's most successful franchises of the past decade.

Colts owner Jim Irsay, who has yet to decide whether to keep Coach Jim Caldwell, said it's time for a fresh start in the wake of a 2-14 season. He made the most dramatic move on a day that included the firing of St. Louis Coach Steve Spagnuolo and General Manager Billy Devaney, and Tampa Bay Coach Raheem Morris.

"Just less than two years ago [we were] getting ready to play in the Super Bowl and go to Miami," Irsay said in a news conference to announce the firings. "Less than two years ago, cleaning off the confetti from the turf at Lucas Oil Stadium. It's been a very sharp decline.

"Even last year when we were getting ready to play our playoff game at 10-6 and division champs, if someone had said in this room, 'You're going to be having the No. 1 pick in the draft, and you're going to lose 13 games in a row and be 2-14,' no one could have possibly believed it."

But without four-time most valuable player Peyton Manning, the Colts were a shell of the team that had so much success with the Polians running the front office. In 14 seasons with Bill Polian running the club, first as general manager and eventually as vice chairman, the Colts went 141-67 with 11 seasons of 10 or more victories. They made it to the playoffs 11 times during his tenure, twice advancing to the Super Bowl and winning the Lombardi Trophy in February 2007 with a victory over Chicago.

Chris Polian had various personnel duties with the team before being promoted to general manager in 2009 and ultimately to team president.

Irsay called the choice to fire the Polians "an intuitive decision" and said, "It was time."

He said, however, that he will continue to evaluate Caldwell and indicated the coach might remain for a fourth season.

Less surprising was the decision of the Rams to part ways with Spagnuolo and Devaney, a move anticipated for weeks. The team was 10-38 in three seasons under Spagnuolo, showing promise in 2010 before slipping back to 2-14 this season.

"Coach addressed the team this morning to let us know that he was terminated," running back Steven Jackson said. "He was sorry ? especially for the guys that have been here the entire three years he was coach ? that he didn't get the job done. He took full responsibility. He really regretted that he couldn't turn this franchise back around."

There is widespread speculation the Rams will be first in line to interview Jeff Fisher, the former Tennessee Titans coach. His agent is Marvin Demoff, whose son, Kevin, is the Rams' executive vice president of football operations. The younger Demoff said he has not spoken to any coaching candidates.

The Rams, who dismissed all of their coaches but offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, have assembled a coaching search committee that includes former coach Dick Vermeil and Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk.

Kevin Demoff told reporters his father was in town over the New Year's holiday, the two spoke Monday about the process for interviewing Fisher, and he expects that process to "move quickly."

"I think the one thing to caution is that because my father represents Jeff Fisher, that we're a natural fit," Demoff said. "His job is to represent Jeff Fisher. Our job is to find the right head coach for the Rams. If those two intersect, that would be fantastic. If they don't, we'll each do the right job for our prospective clients and our prospective organization."

The Buccaneers fired Morris after losing their final 10 games, their longest single-season losing streak since 1977. The last five losses in this season's tailspin were by an average of 23 points.

Jacksonville, which fired a defense-minded coach, Jack Del Rio, during the season, reportedly plans to interview four offensive coordinators: the Jets' Brian Schottenheimer, the Patriots' Bill O'Brien, the Broncos' Mike McCoy and the Falcons' Mike Mularkey.

The fate of San Diego Coach Norv Turner and General Manager A.J. Smith is unclear. As of Monday, they still had their jobs ? Chargers owner Dean Spanos is disheartened by missing the playoffs for a second consecutive year, but pleased by his team's performance Sunday in a victory at Oakland.

"I'd be excited about being back, excited about this team," Turner said Monday. "Again, unless you're living it day to day, you can't appreciate what these guys have been through, what this team has been through from a physical standpoint. They've responded, and I do believe this team can go on and do some great things."

Rob Ford?s funding cuts protested at mayor?s New Year?s Levee

Toronto?s New Year?s Levee hosted by the mayor was briefly interrupted twice Monday in less than an hour by protesters railing against funding cuts.

?Stop the cuts,? chanted a small group of protesters who released a bunch of helium-filled balloons tied to a banner with the same slogan written on it.

More related to this story

About half an hour later the same group had protesters hold a banner in front of Mayor Rob Ford and the nine or so other councillors at the event. The two people were quickly escorted away and the banner was taken away. One man was taken into a nearby security office and two police officers followed him in.

The man who was protesting was allowed to leave at about half an hour later, according to Victoria Barnett from the Stop the Cuts group. She said the man wasn't arrested or charged. Afterwards there was a small police presence on the outside of the festivities, which had about 200 people lining up to see the mayor at 2 p.m.

Deputy Mayor Doug Holyday told reporters the majority of people in line seemed to support the mayor and his administration.

?People are free to express themselves as long as they do it in a lawful way,? Mr. Holyday said.

He said he was unsure why the event was held on Jan. 2 rather than keeping with the tradition of holding it on the first day of the year.

Doug Mitchell, who has lived in Toronto since 1989, said he wasn?t bothered when the levee was held but was willing to stand in line to congratulate the mayor on his first term.

?I think he should keep trimming the fat,? said Mr. Mitchell. ?Continue to cut so people appreciate what we have.?

Strong Quadrantid Meteor Shower, One of 2012's Best, Peaks Wednesday (SPACE.com)

If you enjoy the sight of "shooting stars" then make plans to be out looking skyward during the predawn hours on Wednesday (Jan. 4) when a strong display of Quadrantid meteors may appear. This first meteor shower of the year may end up being one of the best meteor showers of 2012.

To paraphrase Forrest Gump: The Quadrantid meteor shower is like opening up a box of chocolates; you never know what you?re going to get!? Indeed, the Quadrantids are notoriously unpredictable, but if any year promises a fine display, this could be it.

Peak activity is due to occur early on Wednesday at about 2:30 a.m. EST (0730 GMT) and favors eastern North America. The Quadrantid meteor shower sky map here for this story shows where to look to see the display.

The Quadrantids (pronounced KWA-dran-tids) provides one of the most intense annualmeteor showers, with a brief, sharp maximum lasting but a few hours. Adolphe Quetelet of Brussels Observatory discovered the shower in the 1830s, and shortly afterward it was noted by several other astronomers in Europe and America.

The meteors are named after the obsolete constellation Quadrans Muralis the Mural or Wall Quadrant (an astronomical instrument), depicted in some 19th-century star atlases roughly midway between the end of the Handle of the Big Dipper and the quadrilateral of stars marking the head of the constellation Draco. The International Astronomical Union phased out Quadrans Muralis in 1922. [Amazing meteor shower photos]

Always difficult to see

Unfortunately, many factors combine to make the peak of this display difficult to observe on a regular basis:

  • Peak intensity is exceedingly sharp: meteor rates exceed one-half of their highest value for only about 6-hours (compared to two days for the August Perseids). This means that the stream of particles that produce this shower is a narrow one ? apparently derived within the last 500 years from a small comet.

The parentage of the Quadrantids had long been a mystery. Then Peter Jenniskens, an astronomer at the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif., noticed that the orbit of 2003 EH1 ? a small asteroid discovered in March 2003 ? ''falls snug in the shower.'' He believes that this 1.2-mile (2-kilometer) chunk of rock is the source of the Quadrantids; possibly this asteroid is the burnt out core of the lost comet C/1490 Y1.

  • As viewed from mid-northern latitudes, we have to get up before dawn to see the Quadrantids at their best. This is because the radiant ? that part of the sky from where the meteors to emanate ? is down low on the northern horizon until about midnight, rising slowly higher as the night progresses.?

The growing light of dawn ends meteor observing usually by around 7 a.m. local time. So, if the "Quads" are to be seen at all, some part of that 8-hour active period must fall between 2 and 7 a.m.

  • In one out of every three years, bright moonlight spoils the view.
  • Over northern latitudes, early January often sees inclement/unsettled weather.

It is not surprising then, that the Quadrantids are not as well-known as some of the other annual meteor showers, but 2012 may prove to be an exception. [12 Must-See Skywatching Events in 2012]??

Promising viewing prospects

According to Robert Lunsford of the American Meteor Society, maximum activity this year is expected on Wednesday morning, Jan. 4 at 2:30 a.m. EST (0730 GMT).

For those in the eastern United States, the radiant ? that point in the sky from where the meteors will appear to emanate from ? will be about one-third of the way up in the east-northeast sky. The farther to the north and east you go, the higher in the sky the radiant will be. To the south and west the radiant will be lower and the meteors will be fewer.?

Although the moon will be at a bright waxing gibbous phase, it will set by 3 a.m., leaving the sky dark for prospective meteor watchers until the first light of dawn appears at around 6 a.m.

Quadrantid meteors are described as bright and bluish with long silvery trains. Some years produce a mere handful, but for favorably placed observers, this could be a shower to remember; at greatest activity, according to Lunsford, "Eastern observers may be able to see 60-75 Quadrantids per hour."

"If your skies are very clear and dark, allowing you to see faint meteors, your rates could top 100 per hour. Observers located in the western portions of North American will have lower rates but will also have the opportunity to see Quadrantid 'earthgrazers,'" Lunsford added. "Earthgrazers are meteors that skim the upper portion of the atmosphere therefore lasting much longer than normal and producing long trails in the sky. These meteors can only be seen when the radiant lies close to the horizon. As the radiant rises, the meteor paths will become shorter with shorter durations."

Outside of North America, Quadrantid rates could reach around 15-30 per hour for places north of the equator, but observers south of the equator will have little chance of seeing any "Quads" since the radiant will have little chance to clear the horizon before morning twilight interferes.

Don't forget to bundle up!

Finally, so far as weather conditions are concerned, a large high pressure system is expected to dominate the weather across much of the eastern United States and Canada for the peak of the shower meaning skies for these areas should be mainly clear for prospective meteor watchers.

However, it is also expected to be unseasonably cold (perhaps "unreasonably" is a better term to use!), with sub-zero readings possible over parts of upstate New York and New England with sub-freezing temperatures possible down into the Deep South. As one astronomer said prior to a mid-winter meteor watch: "Take the advice of a man whose teeth have chattered on many a winter's night ? wrap up much more warmly than you think is necessary!"
