I am wondering if things go bad, how bad will they get and what kind of life can she expect to live in the meantime? I understand the harsh treatments of cancer, I have seen what the treatments can do and it takes a toll on a person, but wouldn?t facing death do the same thing?
How does one come to a decision like this, if it was your loved one would you try and change their minds, and how would you go about it? Or, would you honor their decision and make it as easy on them as possible?

Some are easy. Some are very rough.

Most of my time as an oncologist was spent explaining things ? over and over,
These are personal choices each person must make for herself or himself.
Metastatic breast carcinoma is not considered curable
- but neither is high blood pressure or diabetes.
How much is someone willing to go through to control a disease?
For breast cancer ? I would try to convince a person to try different treatments.
For pancreatic cancers or some types of lung or brain malignancies,
I would often try to talk people out of taking chemotherapy.
It?s a question of the likelihood of benefit verses doing harm.
If an oncologist makes someone miserable for the last months of their life
without prolonging that life, that doctor has cause more harm than good ? except that for some people the option of doing nothing removes ?hope.? Hope is an intangible factor. I suppose that is why people try homeopathic miracle cures which have no scientific foundation. They want to believe something will work miraculously. I have seen some oncologists use small doses of useless chemotherapy just to give patients and their family members the idea that they were ?doing something.? Perhaps I?m being too candid here. There is a great deal of psychology in medical oncology because of the life threatening malignancies.
Long, open, honest discussions with the oncologist are crucial. Hopefully this person has an oncologist with a good balance of compassion and common sense along with medical expertise and patience. Some oncologists have this ? and some do not. An oncologist who is rushed and overworked plus sleep deprived is not at his or her best.

Dave,
While I have a great deal of respect for the support you have provided your wife during her cancer journey, you cannot fully understand how it affects you as you haven?t been through it yourself.
While I found my own treatment relatively easy compared to many, I am not sure it is something I would choose to go through again, even if death was the alternative.
If I was facing a choice of treatment to extend the time I had with no expectation of being cancer free at the end of it, hen my choice would be palliative care. The only thing that got me through my treatment (other than my daughter) was the expectation of good health when it was over.
As for a ?bucket list?, personally I couldn?t think of anything worse than trying to cram things in when I was feeling unwell.
We are all different, we will all make different choices in life and no-one knows just what decision they will make until they are faced with that situation.
Having made the decision of how I wanted to spend the rest of my life, I would resent anyone trying to change my mind. I have seen friends desperately trying to make their partners understand why they wanted to stop treatment then helped support them through the treatments they knew were hopeless but they had been ?guilted? into accepting. This is NOT a decision to be made as a couple or as a family, it is one that should be up to the individual.

Plastic Surgery For At-Risk Breast Cancer Patients | Prescription ...
An article appearing in the January/February issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal suggests that patients considering elective breast surgery would gain ultimately improved results after being assessed for breast cancer risk. The article also provides guidelines for plastic surgeons to help women determine breast cancer risk, as well as the most successful options for surgical intervention and breast reconstruction.
There are many risk factors associated with breast cancer, family history probably being the most prevalent. Although these risk factors don?t always mean any woman can or cannot get diagnosed with breast cancer. Estimates predict one out of every eight women will develop breast cancer at some point in her lifetime. That is why it is so important to have regular screenings, either using MRI or mammography to detect the presence of breast cancer, and even genetic testing to determine the risk of developing breast cancer in the future.
?Genetic testing, such as that for BRCA1 and BRCA2 (genes associated with breast cancer), has allowed clinicians to better tailor risk management strategies in patients from families with hereditary breast cancer,? said Hooman Soltanian, MD, lead author of the piece. ?Plastic surgeons are in a unique position to provide early preventative options to their patients.?
In Phoenix cosmetic surgeon Dr. Geoffrey Leber, who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and board certified for the American Board of Plastic Surgery also stresses the importance of breast implant safety education especially amongst those at risk for breast cancer.
Early intervention with particularly high risk women can mean they can choose from more surgical and reconstructive procedures. Also, reconstructive surgery and aesthetic plastic surgery of the breasts, such as Phoenix breast lift surgery (Mastopexy) if done at the same time, can also optimize the cosmetic results.
Even for women simply seeking aesthetic breast surgery, Phoenix breast implants specialist Dr. Leber says that determining breast cancer risk sooner rather than later can help in choosing the best course of action, and ultimately achieve the best possible results.

? It is important to note that breast augmentation, reduction, mastopexy (breast lift) and implants may have significant consequences in screening and surveillance of breast cancer, specifically with regard to future mammographic evaluation. A new mammogram should be obtained three-to-six months after surgery, to serve as the new baseline for evaluation.
? Ultrasound studies and MRI may be used to further evaluate patients with difficult or unsatisfactory mammograms.

So anyway, the story is that during Journalism, we had a practice run of the Capture the Flag tournament thing we?re hosting tomorrow. It?s a fundraiser and people are being really difficult and Jewish and we don?t even know if it?s happening anymore.
But anyway. I?m out of shape. Even for me. I need super lungs. I?m going to get surgery and have a special backpack that holds my extra lungs. And my seven hearts. Maybe I?ll just be a cyborg or something. Crap.

Intel's 2Q numbers show PC industry's new approach (AP)
SAN FRANCISCO ? Intel Corp. said its results for the latest quarter were better than expected as it milked strong corporate demand for PCs and the need for new computer servers to handle Internet traffic on mobile devices.
But the second-quarter numbers, reported Wednesday, don't necessarily mean that the PC business, which Intel helped create three decades ago, is in great shape.
Consumer demand for PCs in the U.S. and Europe has been weak for the past year. Stacy Smith, Intel's chief financial officer, said in an interview that it is expected to remain "relatively soft" for the remainder of 2011.
Shipments into those markets are actually decreasing, according to market research IDC and Gartner Inc. released last week.
But Intel's latest numbers provide a map for how the industry plans to find its way out.
Intel's net income rose just 2 percent to $2.95 billion, or 54 cents per share, from $2.89 billion, or 51 cents per share, a year ago. Excluding some expenses, Intel earned 59 cents per share, ahead of analyst expectations for 51 cents per share, according to FactSet.
Revenue rose 21 percent to $13.03 billion, also ahead of analyst projections for $12.8 billion.
Intel projected revenue of $13.5 billion to $14.5 billion in current quarter; analysts' estimates were at the low end, $13.5 billion.
The higher numbers reflect three trends that Intel and its customers ? the big PC makers ? plan to ride to stronger growth even as parts of their business contract because of market saturation and the popularity of tablet computers.
First, corporations are still upgrading their employees' PCs. They are believed to be only in the middle of a multi-year cycle.
Emerging markets such as India and China are seeing strong PC growth, as incomes rise and more marketing efforts are targeted there.
And the smartphone and tablet craze, which PC makers are desperately trying to latch onto, benefits a company such as Intel because more servers are needed to handle the crush of new mobile Internet traffic.
Investors' reaction was muted in extended trading, after the results were reported. Intel shares fell 5 cents, or 0.2 percent, to $22.94.
